U.S. officials have told Sen. Bernie Sanders that Russia is attempting to help his presidential campaign as part of an effort to interfere with the Democratic contest, according to people familiar with the matter.

President Trump and lawmakers on Capitol Hill have also been informed about the Russian assistance to the Vermont senator, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.

It is not clear what form that Russian assistance has taken. U.S. prosecutors found a Russian effort in 2016 to use social media to boost Sanders campaign against Hillary Clinton, part of a broader effort to hurt Clinton, sow dissension in the American electorate and ultimately help elect Donald Trump.

Russia wants chaos. They back both Trump and Bernie in splitting the country and it works.

Playbook as fuck.

They're creating whataboutism and talking points for the Trump campaign to deflect and blame.

"In 2016, Russia used internet propaganda to sow division in our country, and my understanding is that they are doing it again in 2020. Some of the ugly stuff on the internet attributed to our campaign may well not be coming from real supporters."

Mind you, while taking care to run the playbook and create disinformation so that we can both sides the relevant election interference...the current govt refuses to pass laws to secure elections and fires people that raise questions about it/contradict the current presidency.

So tired.

If Trump wins, Putin has his puppet in office for another 4 years.

If Sanders wins, Trump gets to launch an investigation, led by AG Barr, into whether Russia helped him "steal" the election. Constitutional crisis time?

Either way, Putin wins.

If Russia does help Bernie get elected after 4 years of Republicans doing fuck all to prevent another Russian attack on the election then that's just pure Karma

Would be a 200 IQ move by Sanders to tie his more rabid supporters to Russia

This way he can deflect whenever the topic comes up, and his more ardent supporters wouldn't care at all if people consider them Russian Trolls

As long as they continue to go hard online

He already did that at the last debate and the quote from him in the article basically says as much:
In 2016, Russia used Internet propaganda to sow division in our country, and my understanding is that they are doing it again in 2020. Some of the ugly stuff on the Internet attributed to our campaign may well not be coming from real supporters.

Trump's gonna deny Russia is helping him and then say "I was briefed about Russia actually helping Bernie not me" isn't he

It makes no common sense that Russia would help Trump and Bernie.

Misinformation as fuck.

This is just so the Trump-Russia aide can be discredited.

This story getting out only helps trump which is what the Russians want. Republicans will point to this story and say "SEE, the Russians want a real communist in the White House"

Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States to fuel instability and separatism, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists". Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics"

Bernie's response is better, but I still don't like this is happening and think he should more forcefully reject the help.

So... does this mean Fox goes back to hating Russia, and those old guys have to change their t-shirts to "I'd Rather Be Republican Than A Russian Tool"? And now conservatives have to hate Russia again?

I agree, but you are probably going to get lit up by passionate people. They did the same with him in 2016, primarily to fracture the left and to deny Clinton, because they properly understood that Clinton properly understood them and the danger they pose to the global order.

Also, people should consider this:
Politico - Down-ballot Republicans watch with glee as Sanders gains steam

I would assume they favor of any candidate that is less interventionist than previous administrations. Additionally even if that isn't really a big issue, just by doing this they know it will further Trump's election bid, and/or sow discord on the Democrat side in general.

Probably also reasonable to think that a Bernie ticket could have a negative impact on some state races, bit who knows.

It's not "supporting Sanders" in the traditional sense you're assuming, as how they're supporting Sanders matters. The narratives being pushed in 2016 were very much designed to destabilize Dems and get people to stay home via bullshit "Sanders was robbed" crap. So it's "support", but support in the same way they were setting up fake BLM and anti-B:LM rallies via facebook.

Creating divisions also makes it difficult to unite against a common enemy. This allows Russia to continue doing as they wish.
