Article updated:

CBS and Viacom have announced an agreement to reunite, forming a company they hope will be big enough to tackle the behemoths of the media landscape.

The combined company will include a film studio, Paramount Pictures, as well as the CBS network, cable channels such as MTV and Comedy Central and a host of digital platforms.

The all-stock deal will see Viacom shares convert to .59625 of CBS shares. CBS' market capitalization is about 50 percent larger than Viacom.

Bob Bakish, Viacom's current president and chief executive, will assume the role at the combined firm. Joe Ianniello, who had been president and acting chief executive at CBS, will now be chairman and chief executive of the company's CBS division.

Weird calling this a merger or part of the same mega-merger trend, seeing how they were the same company for decades until 2006, and still shared intellectual properties and assets.

But, whatever. At least Star Trek isn't going to be split between CBS and Viacom anymore and we might get cohesion between the series and movies again.

Interested to see how this will accompany CBS All Access and Pluto TV. They could have something really special with Pluto TV if it gets more Viacom/CBS channels

this whole deal is so stupid? why'd they even break up in the first place?
In March 2005, Viacom announced plans of looking into splitting the company into two publicly traded companies under the continuing ownership of National Amusements. The company was not only dealing with a stagnating stock price, but also the internal rivalry between Les Moonves and Tom Freston, longtime heads of CBS and MTV Networks respectively. After the departure of Mel Karmazin in 2004, Redstone, who served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, decided to split the offices of President and Chief Operating Officer between Moonves and Freston.

Greed and stupidity

I just wonder what will happen to CBS All Access. Will they add more content to it or move CBS AA originals to the new service? Also, how will they utilize Pluto TV with their streaming strategy?

Hopefully this means we can get Kelvin stuff in Star Trek Timelines.

No, this means the Kelvin stuff is 100% dead. That was an invention of the Viacom side, and they say they want Star Trek to be controlled by the CBS side after the merger.

At this very early stage, we hear that any great Trek will fall under the fiefdom of the David Stapf-run CBS Studios – as we await who truly rules what and whether a fourth Star Trek movie in the latest reboot round is truly coming in an R-rated form from Quentin Tarantino or whoever.

the seperation of the two to begin with was a bad move that was supposed to make a few people a lot of money, i dont really see an issue with them merging together again

Big news for Star Trek. I wonder if we are going to see a Oder syncing of films and tv shows now.

I'm sure they won't. Picard will partly deal with the events of Star Trek 2009
Exactly. I get that they won't make anymore movies in that universe, but putting characters and ships in Timelines (a game that celebrates all of Star Trek, even crazy obscure stuff) seems possible.

The developers have said that the rights is the main reason why they aren't in there already.

I was talking to my wife about this. She's worried that CBSI could be drastically downsized due to redundancy. She used to work there and she thinks There's going to be an restructuring.
