It might be easy to peg Wargroove as an imitator, but its genius is in details. With tons of modes and maps it doesn't skimp on content, but the approachable-yet-nuanced tactics at its heart, as well as the way it deftly iterates on the genre, make it an outstanding title. It might be building on a strong foundation, but Wargroove earns its crown on its own merits.

Wargroove is the Advance Wars successor its long-neglected fans have been waiting for. It faithfully revives the tactics I loved that series for while putting plenty of its own spins on the concept. Campaign levels do have a tendency to go on longer than they should considering its lack of mid-match saves, but when you add in its extra modes, loads of unlockables, and amazing level editor and it's a game I'm excited to keep playing far past its campaign.

There's a lot to love with Wargroove. I definitely have my qualms with some of the campaign mission design and plot, there is so much here to love. I can't say that it's a completely innovate entry into the genre, but I think it's safe to say that Wargroove is a title that needs to be in every turn-based strategy lover's catalog.

Wargroove is a delight to play, and the possibility of an endless supply of content for it is a tantalizing prospect. Chucklefish could have offered up a prettied-up take on Advance Wars with online multiplayer and called it a day. Instead, it's made meaningful improvements that make this both a satisfying answer to starved Advance Wars fans' wishes and a genuinely great experience on its own merits.

Love is a tricky one, though. I suspect WarGroove deviates more from the Advance Wars/Fire Emblem formula than I've given it credit for. Under the hood, I imagine there are all kinds of tweaks I haven't noticed. But that's the point, isn't it? Ultimately, WarGroove isn't competing with Advance Wars and Fire Emblem so much as it's competing with my memory of them, and as any CO will tell you, that's a match-up which is never going to lead to victory. I like WarGroove but I don't love it. Generous as this game is - and it is absurdly generous - love is reserved for the real thing.
