I dunno, the heavy weapons look a tad too small compared to the body.
The Adeptus Ministorum, with it's people with flaming hats and gothic cathedrals in space, has decided that only when bulk-buying Soriatas heavy weapons does it need to be renowned for understated, efficient and svelte industrial design :D

I've just started looking at my Blackstone Fortress minis and am thinking I might use the priest and the warrior with the chainsaw/flame thingy to experiment a bit with the contrast paints ahead of my plan for a sisters force.

Black Library is going to be republishing the Liber Chaotica. Which is super cool. I hope they republish other lore only focused books like Xenology next.

Just finished reading Dante and Devastation of Baal, really enjoyed those. I normally avoid space marine bolter porn but these seemed more thoughtful. Presumably as Dante is quite introspective and the secrets and flaws of the Blood Angels pairs well with the vision of angelic grace they portray on the outside. Sets them all up for the current setting, anyway.

Going to try Armageddon next, as the short story with the Celestial Lions that follows Helsreach looks like it'll lead into Spear of the Emperor quite well.

Man I might buy this. My one is years old and is almost destroyed. Great book. Probably the best Lore book GW have published and one of the best books they have created full stop.

EXPO-May31-Enforcers1-5dse.jpg

In Necromunda, law enforcement isn't so much a thin blue line as a very thick grey line being used to cave in the skull of any ganger who dares to look at you funny. Meet the Palanite Enforcers!

Sure, gangs are fun – but sometimes, you just want to smash some underhivers in the name of truth, justice and more-generous rations of corpse-starch. The Palanite Enforcers offer you the chance to bring the underhive's notoriously brutal branch of law enforcement to your games of Necromunda, with deadly results.

The new Palanite Enforcers kit is just as packed with options as the Necromunda gang sets, letting you bring your patrol to life with a vast range of weapons – from shock batons to shotguns, and even bolters. These guys have been redesigned from the ground up to capture the classic feel of the Enforcers while modernising them and tying them into the world of Necromunda and the 41st Millennium – you'll notice their gear contains design elements from other Imperial forces while maintaining a brutal feel of its own.

Escalation is the thrilling next chapter in the story of Blackstone Fortress, pitting you against a threat not just to Precipice, but to the Imperium itself. In this latest expansion, Obsidius Mallex has gained control of a portion of the alien space station's apocalyptic power, and now threatens to bring it to bear against his foes. Before, you were battling for treasure – now, you're fighting for survival.

Like the Dreaded Ambull before it, Escalation offers a new quest for Blackstone Fortress. However, the quest for the sinister Black Shrines offers new twists on the core gameplay of Warhammer Quest and promises to be a challenge for even the most seasoned pack of adventurers.

You won't be going in alone, however. Escalation brings four new Explorers to the game (and one very loyal Servitor!), offering you new options for your adventures and allowing you to own some iconic characters in plastic, like an Adeptus Ministorum Crusader and Primaris Psyker. Escalation will be the first time fans outside of the USA and Germany can get their hands on these models (if you're in the USA or Germany, you'll also be able to track them down in the Combat Arena game).

It's not just the good guys* getting some reinforcements, but the Servants of the Abyss, with a brand new set of cultists, led by a literal Firebrand. These guys feature a more occult and barbarous aesthetic than their Traitor Guard brethren from the main set, helping shed some light on the dizzying diversity of the Slaves to Darkness.

* Well, as good as a group of ultra-theocratic loyalists to the Imperium can be.

All of that looks awesome! I find it really interesting they're being called Enforcers and not Adeptus Arbites.

New cultists look dope! Reminds me that I really need to pick up Blackstone at some point.

These aren't the Adeptus Arbites mind you, but a group that deals with the underhive.
That sounds about right. I mostly mentioned it because I recently got a hold of the Dark Tides adventure for Wrath & Glory (which also takes place on a hive world) and it also referred to the local law enforcement as Enforcers and where even operating in the upper hive. The adventure came out like almost half a year ago now so it predates this by some time. Part of me wonders if its a rebranding of the Arbites similar to the whole Imperial Gaurd to Astra Militarum change. Maybe they're still the Adetus Arbites but now individuals withing the organization are called enforcers now?

Edit: Also the new Enforcer models have lot of similarites with the old Arbites models from back in the day. The design of their armour as well as their weapons and equipment is almost exactly the same.

ArbitesMinis.jpg

Then we have this Lexicanum article that describes Enforces as follows:

Enforcers are members of the Adeptus Arbites who are recruited by the Inquisition to act as an independent agents when they are investigating a member of policing or governing organizations, such as the Adeptus Arbites or even a Planetary Commander.

So, I think they're using this old piece of lore (the name "Enforcer") as the new brand for the Arbites.

Essentially in the lore the Arbitrators are a bit too high-ranking, well-trained and well-equipped to have them down fighting gangs in the underhive with shock mauls, shields and shotguns.* Various books say that, because of the different way the local populace is policed across the galaxy, there's often confusion between a local who is enforcing the law as a day job and an arbitrator. Arbitrators come from off-world scholams and answer to judges, so they don't fear local politicians, governors etc who might otherwise blackmail them. They are far more highly trained, drilled in the Imperial faith, held to high standards and represent the off-world power of the Imperium, as much to the local nobility as to the general populace as they can't be bought. Confusion also comes from the Arbites miniatures tooled up as riot police going way back too- some worlds have them in company strength with their courthouses as huge bastions and reminders of Imperial rule , but some might only have one individual, or just one that passes through every so often. Furthermore, the first novel about an arbitrator was called 'enforcer' too as far as I remember, adding to the confusion. Ultimately they haven't had a huge amount done with them as a faction so the lore has been pieced together over the last thirty years in odd chunks of background and varies by author.

I like the new models, and the nods to various Imperial outfits from other forces. I think this is also a push to finally separate the Arbitrators/enforcers look from 2000AD/Judge Dredd.

*Having said that, in a first edition Necromunda campaign played out in a hazy summer in the 90s, a friend of mine ended up a gang with a rating so high and so many skills, rare wargear etc that nothing short of a marine tactical squad could stop them...

Arbites are like FBI, they work directly for the overall Imperium, whereas I assume the intent with the Enforcers is to show how every planet is still has their own individual local police forces and agencies.

Yeah. Arbites are a hugely powerful arm of the rule of Terra, with their own fleet, effectively a massive paramilitary force spread across a million worlds, capable of fighting limited engagements if they have to. Enforcers are a catch-all term for local troops, which will vary wildly.

As 'enforcement' is part of the Arbites job description, and 'sci-fi armed police' covers both, it's easy to see how they get confused!

Loving the new Chaos Cultist models from Blackstone. Not sure I'll get the expansion but I will defo keep an eye on ebay to see if they are being sold separately. The dream of all Chaos players is to get a 40 man Cultist squad all with unique poses.

I still haven't cracked open my Blackstone box but goddamn at those minis.

In other related news, I may have mentioned here a while ago that I picked up a box of Tau pathfinders that was on sale in a hobby store back when I was in Belgium, despite not having a Tau army.

Well, a month or so ago a hobby store opened in my vicinity, which has open tables for playing/painting. I decided to assemble and paint some of them to see if I can get myself back in the groove for when the Sisters release.

At the opening party I randomly decided to grab a box of XV25s just to show my support and following a demo of Kill Team 2 weeks ago I ended up looking at what I had and realised I could make a whole team with what I already had.

I ended up with this :
Leader
XV25 Shas'vre with Pulse Blaster and Target Lock

Specialists
Pathfinder Gunner with Ion Rifle - Sniper
Pathfinder Gunner with Ion Rifle - Comms
Pathfinder Gunner with Ion Rifle - Demolitions

Non-specialists
XV25 with Pulse Blaster
MB3 Recon drone with Pulse Blaster
MV1 Combat drone with 2x Pulse Carbine
MV1 Combat drone with 2x Pulse Carbine
MV1 Combat drone with 2x Pulse Carbine

Having so many combat drones (and possibly MORE if I take the 2nd XV25 out) made me realise how cleverly shitty GW is to get said drones. I'm lucky I randomly bought a single XV8 box years ago and get 2 drones in there, because combat drones come only (as far as I can see) in the tactical drones box (ONE combat drone) or the 3 XV8 suits (60 bucks) or the start collecting megabox.

Another great Contrast vid.

Also it seems the whole Citadel paints line is getting reshuffled, my local store was told to "bring the subject up at a later date, following announcements" when they inquired about paint displays to acquire.

I've been out of the game for a bit since my son was born 5 years ago, but he's now expressed an interest in playing so I'm kind of looking back in.

I assume the first thing I should probably buy is the latest rule book? I actually bought the collectors edition of 7th edition, but didn't get to play it too much haha.

The guy at my local shop told me that some of the codexs were republished with the same covers? I've got the hard back of Grey knights and Eldar, are those out of date now?

My friend is sending me a bunch of Orks that he doesn't play anymore, so that should be fun to use against my son. Also picked up DoW2 again and started my like 5th Space Marine playthrough! Hopefully I can do some comp stomps in dow2 with my friend that isn't local anymore.

You should look into Kill Team imo, skirmish sized game using the 40k minis. Otherwise yes, you need the new rulebook for 8th edition. I'm not sure about Grey Knights & Eldar codices.

Every codex was replaced for 8th ed, so any that you have left from seven are no longer valid. GW also now does semi-annual points updates. The last set has just been published on the GW website, but some are also in the December set, which was published in Chapter Approved 2018.

Grey Knights significantly benefit from the points updates (but are still probably the worst army effectiveness wise unfortunately).

Biggest one for me is Guy Haley releasing a new Dante book later this year. As I've just finished reading Devastation of Baal that's perfect timing for me, I'm interested to see how he takes on his new wider role.

I'll be picking up The Hollow Mountain too, Chris Wraight's books set on Terra are fantastic.

The big things that I notice, for 40k/HH, are the Navigator, Cawl and Valdor books.
In terms of importance to the lore, absolutely. It'll be interesting to see what project Cawl is working on now, and Valdor might point at a few grand plans re. The Emperor. I really like the way they are pushing the lore forward (or rounding it out and joining the gaps between past abs present in the case of the HH!) in the novels.

Yep. I like how they are exploring other places in the Imperium other than Space Marines and the Imperial Guard.

Highly likely that Cawl is working on Blackstone projects. He promised Guilliman that he'd reproduce the anti-warp Pylons and build enough of them to reclaim realspace from the Warp.

Listening to "Know No Fear" on Audible - why do people think 30k Guilliman is boring compared to 40K Guilliman? He's just a thoughtful, contemplative guy. It's interesting to see how much he regrets the sanction of the Word Bearers on Monarchia - and how desperate he was to repair the rift, and how furious he gets when the treachery is revealed.

Strangely I find the Ultramarines characters to actually be interesting instead of just the stock standard space marines they seem to be portrayed as in 40k. Maybe it's the sudden treachery unnerving them, but they are genuinely stunned and seemingly lost on how to respond. Even when they fight back the sheer shock of it all seems to make them question everything they've known up until this point.

Also Aeonid Thiel is so...unlike the rest of the Ultramarines. I know he was censured for daring to propose that Astartes MIGHT have to fight other Astartes, but when things start blowing up around him he doesn't just wait for orders; he suits up, raids Gulliman's personal armory and starts rebuilding the chain of command aboard the flagship. He's the first to think "Hmm, maybe bolters aren't the answer to these demons - let's try some melee weapons and some good old fashioned fire!"

The Ultramarines suffer in one particular area the most when it comes to the literature about them. The characters (The 40k ones) are just awful. So many (if not most) Ultramarines stories are either about Cato "I have my head so far up my own ass the light of the astronmicon couldn't reach it" Sicarious and of course Papa Smurf Marneus Calgar. They're both so insufferably pompous and arrogant that it's created such bad impression for many 40k fans that characters like Aeoid Theil and or Uriel Ventris (or even Captain Titus from Space Marine) as being remarkable. When in actuality they are more what the Ultramarines are truly like. At least what they should be.

For Guilliman I think it's the same thing. Peoples impressions of 40k Ultras retroactively effected their perception of 30k so the kind of caricature they built up in their heads is a lot more cartoonishly boring and pompous.

You know Calgar is hated when even Papa Smurf looks down on him and chooses to hang out with Cato Sicarious. The only time Sicarious seemed halfway normal to me was at the end of Devastation of Baal - when he was in awe of Dante's sheer grit and determination in holding off a hive fleet. Dante might be the only other marine to make Sicarious go "You know...maybe I'm not the be all end all of Astartes."

Funny thing that, when I read Dark Imperium Guilliman out right comments to himself Sicarious is a pompous jerk but appointed Sicarious as captain of the Victirx Guard so he could keep an eye on him and he wouldn't do anything stupid. Which I found hilarious.

There's another one in Deathwatch (Steve Parker). The others all get cool callsigns, the Death Spectres Librarian is called 'scholar' for obvious reasons, and the Imperial Fist sergeant/special weapons/demolitions trooper is called 'omni' because he's scarily competent at everything. 'The only thing he can't do is fit in tight places' quips their Raven Guard brother.

The Ultramarine, who is their best sniper/pointman but incredibly tedious, is annoyed at not being the squad leader just because he's an Ultramarine. He gets called 'Prophet', which sounds cool apart from the fact that he gets called that against his will by the others because he's always saying 'I told you so'. :D

The difference between the chapters makes for some fun dialogue, particilarly as half the squad is from chapters that haven't had much written about them but have interesting backgrounds (Exorcists and the aforementioned DS in particular, the combination of the mysterious 13th founding formations and the Deathwatch is fun). I haven't read the sequel, Shadowbreaker, yet, but am looking forward to it as Parker dropped some interesting hints.

I finished Shadowbreaker yesterday and one of my favourite parts was Prophet seeing some marines from Ultramarine successor chapters and thinking that he'll finally get the respect he thinks he's deserved as an Ultramarine. It was just a throw away line but it pretty much sums his character up. He thinks he should lead and get respect just because of his chapter.

It's a good book and a can't wait for the next one

Yeah, ever since Codex Ultramarines in the 90s they've also been cast as the 'standard' baseline force that allows the non-Codex forces to differ from, and unfortunately sometimes that's meant the others get cast as 'like Ultramarines, but better' at one sphere or another, whether that's at siegecraft, fire discipline, close assault, light vehicles etc. Sales of Space Wolves, Black Templars, Blood Angels and Dark Angels also show a misleading proportional focus on such divergence, but for obviously more interesting battlefield and collecting options and storytelling reasons. For similar reasons the Grey Knights and Deathwatch capture the imagination more than, for example, the Novamarines (so good to see them in Plague War!).

I like it in the novels when they take that adherence to the Codex Astartes and show that it doesn't mean limited thinking, it can also mean a dedication and mastery of it that acts as an ideal for the vast majority of loyalist chapters, even if some hobbyists find them a bit boring.

In the same way, I always found early IG armies a bit boring, and Eldar armies that had a few Guardian squads backed by one of each unit of aspect warriors a bit samey too. When they released stuff like the Craftworld Eldar lists and IG Doctrines, it opened up a lot more options that Space Marines had had for years. There was a great voxcast episode (I can't remember which one but they are all good if you like hearing the backstory of the miniature and lore design) where they said that players never say 'I collect space Marines', it's always a chapter title, which goes to show how important and characterful such organisation traits (and even stuff like colour schemes) are. I've often thought that was a real missed opportunity with Age of Sigmar, that the sigmarine faction is so covered in Sigmar iconography that it leaves little room for player/painter interpretation.

Nothing I hate seeing more in chapter fluff than "They consider themselves staunch codex adherents, even far surpassing the Ultramarines." Yuck. Looking at you, Red Scorpions.
