On 31st of January 2019, despite having a small but stable community continuing to play the game, Sony shut down the servers for the online shooter Warhawk. As a veteran of the game, I was heartbroken over the loss of such a game, as it was very unique within its genre, including having a sandbox style of map design, as well as its open ended gameplay which allowed for things such as sticking a bunch of mines onto a jeep and driving it into the enemy's base before bailing out and letting the rest take its course. That's not even including the plethora of game modes, with more added in later updates, including a mode where a random member of yours and the enemy's team become more powerful for a limited time, earning a bonus if you manage to kill the opposing member. The only way to play online after that was through using third party software to tunnel the game's LAN mode (either through Xlink Kai, or Warhawk Reborn, the latter of which was a lot less painless to get up and running than the former), but did not allow for stat tracking or trophy earning.
Until now. Thanks to some dedicated fans, Warhawk has been brought back from the dead through the use of the PlayStation Online Network Emulated system (or PSONE, har har). The process is as simple as changing the DNS of your stock PS3, and you should be good to go, but if you're still confused as to how to do so, here's a video tutorial.
And to go off on a bit of a tangent, that's not all the team is working on, as they're attempting to revive the online servers of other Sony published games, including WipEout HD (a bit redundant since Omega Collection, but if you want to earn the online trophies, why not?), SOCOM Confrontation, and even Home, with other games in the planning stages, Killzone among them. As a preservationist, this is all very exciting for me.
