Meanwhile our country is actively making it hard for native americans to vote, but everyone is talking about this instead.

Our nation is so stupid.

I think this was a 200IQ move if she really wants to have any shot at the presidency. Leaving this giant elephant to the election season would have been a total political suicide. Now Trump's biggest "ammo" against her has been greatly reduced, she just needs to own the fact that claiming heritage was a mistake, but at least she proved there was something in her claim. Much unlike all of Trump's claims that he's ever made.
Doesn't matter to Trump or his base. How many baseless conspiracies about Cruz and Hillary did he spout during the campaign with no facts?

Long as it looks good as a tidbit for the media to bash over and over again Trump and his cronies will be happy. People forget the media will be playing that shit 24/7.

If you watch the mini-documentary she commissioned about this crap posted on her twitter you'll see she's not interested in doing that. This is all just absurd.

I don't know how she thought this was a good idea. I don't know how all these highly intelligent, experienced politicians are getting outpoliticked by Donald Trump.

I took a DNA test and it originally didn't show up but about a year later they updated it and it showed my native ancestry was from mexico from around aguascalientes

I was reading an article about this earlier today and it went into how the issue is that North American natives are actively discouraged from contributing their DNA to research along these lines, one of the reasons being so that 99.9% white people like Warren don't commission genetic reports and start walking around calling themselves Cherokee when they find that they have 0.09% Native blood.

The original article notes that they used South American and Mexican reference populations in Warren's test, not North American.

I can't believe anyone (who hasn't decided yet) is going to rank even moderately a mistaken family tree story as a reason not to vote for her, Democrats need to grow a fucking spine.

Browse conservative Twitter for 5 minutes and tell us you still think the underlined statement is true. Then, ramp what you see up by a factor of 100 for a preview of what things would like like in the middle of a general election cycle, should she get there.

It's not the Democrats who wouldn't vote for her. It's the most important group of voters in the country, the swing voters.

I can see the "Punished Warren - A Hero Denied Her Tribe" memes now

She called Trump's bluff and took the test.

She told Trump to donate the 1 million to a Native American charity.

Why are people trashing her? She just made Trump look like a complete ass and beat him at his own game.

What worries me here is how out of touch she may be if she genuinely thought this was a smart move. She's such a smart person too, how on earth did she think this was a good idea?

Someone fill me in, was it still a good idea to do this

jesus

It seems more of an error on Chuck's behalf than Warren's given he fails to note that she took the test in order to get money for the National Indigenous Women's Resource Centre because Trump specifically challenged her to the DNA test and said he'd donate the money if she shown she had the heritage. Chuck also seems to be vexed over it being used in relation to her potential citizenship which she's never claimed. So I don't know why people are acting like this is a huge issue?

With that said Warren has fucked up in not owning that it was wrong of her to list herself are a minority as a professor no matter how much the stories of her grandparents and their persecution had shaped her and her views because she's clearly white as fuck and it undermines actual POC. Still, she never used it to get ahead or advance her career which is what the republicans use to slander her. She also fucked up in not contacting any tribal nations before releasing the test.

Basically I think a lot of this is fulled by people "not being sexist" but not wanting a woman to run against trump no matter the cost which we've seen since she announced her candidacy. The amazing thing is they'll hang Warren for what's a politically tiny hiccup in being proud of the ancestry that her grandparents told her she had which is probably one of the tiniest skeletons in any of the dems closets whilst also throwing support for people like Amravati who's already known as a creepy porn lawyer by the right and constantly fucks up on a national after delivering grandiose statements on how he'll sink Trump or Kavanaugh.

a) actual Native Americans find it pretty offensive
b) less politically/racially attentive voters' main takeaway is likely, IMO, to be the minuscule percentage of Native American DNA found, thus reinforcing the very narrative this was intended to rebut

Remind me how people pretend to care more about this non-event than the approximately 300 scandals Trump had, none of which "ended" him?

It's not so much that I'm scandalized by Warren claiming to have Native ancestry so much that I cant take a potential 2020 contender seriously when the run-up to announcing their candidacy includes a huge unforced error that may destroy their presidential ambitions.

Okay makes sense since people already claim native ancestry without DNA.I never understood why people like to claim native ancestry.

swing voters don't even exist. they're all closeted R or D anyway and will vote their preference.

it's just getting out the less inclined voters or people not as likely to show up and vote.

This is likely why it was a smart move. Get a bunch of headlines basically saying she was right. If it's going to be an issue, and it would be against Trump, it's best to get it out and litigated early. When it comes up again it'll feel old.
