The player wants to play because they are a competitor. Someone needs to prevent their dumb ass from playing when it isn't safe.

But we don't know what the behind the scenes here booked like.. we know KL was actively and publicly being called a liar by his team last year.

Fuck pop for that one and I'm a Spurs fan.

Yeah which is why a players association doctor is under the same conflict of interest as a team doctor.

Not to mention that they have to pay money for these docs that gets taken out of players pockets and the players are less likely to be down for that

Players have likely played in far worse shape than that. Dude was dancing in the tunnel before hand.

People maybe also need to breathe and quit with the "WWE stuff" of trying to cast players as villains and thinking they're just 2D caricatures.

KD cares about the team and his teammates. If he didn't give it a go then it would just be a ton of "well he never gave a shit, he was just a gun for hire who sat out the Finals on purpose".

So many haters 20 feet up the dude's ass. Tough situation.

Literally none of this matters.

They cleared him. They shouldn't have. End of story. All this "he wanted to play" "but what would the fans have thought if he didn't give it a go?" is just fucking noise.

The media pressured KD to play ? They don't give a fuck about what the media has to say lol

It's just a truly unfortunate incident that people down the line cleared and thought wouldn't get worse.

And many of them wind up broke because they are high income earners but turning high income into large wealth isn't easy when your income earning days are limited by age.

Meanwhile these leagues operate monopolies and a bunch of billionaires set salary caps because they just can't possibly pay more than some made up number.

At least MLB and the competitive landscape of international soccer(football) get players paid something close to their actual value.

But the NBA/NFL is a god damned joke of inequity but heaven help the players association if they go on strike.
MLB they don't make anywhere near their actual value, guys are held down arbitrarily in their earning power for years to the point where players who peak early end up screwed out of tens if not hundreds of millions of dollar in net value add that they don't get because oops, didn't hit free agency early enough. Matt Harvey probably missed out on $40-50M because his arm gave out early after several years of dominance for instance. NFL and NBA labor stoppages end up shunted onto the players and owners do everything they can to increase financial burden on players to disincentivize that (ever wonder why instead of punishments being suspensions blanket cause, they're almost always money first unless it's an egregious act? That's why).

None of the leagues pay commensurate to value, and that's not even covering the piss poor pension plans, the abandonment of players from more than 20 years ago, the complete lack of a comprehensive lifetime health plan, any sort of legitimate financial guidance and the monopoly they have on keeping these players young, stupid, and unaware by forbidding them access or even to have a conversation with a financial adviser beyond "approved" ones by the league which means "they paid the right bribes and signed the right papers" and isn't a signal of any sort of real legitimacy. Evidenced by the overwhelming number of them that end up sued for theft of wages.

It's a microcosm of how labor is treated in the west. Even those with ostensible power and wealth behind them are ultimately nothing to the great meat grinder of unlimited capital poised against them. You can be the richest worker in the world, but you're still just a worker.

It's gross, guys end up crippled for life and can't even get a measly pension.

It's why I said he fucked himself. We all know KD was pushing to play and the team doctors didn't stop him because him playing would be good for the team. That's what needs to change.

I think it can be a moment where media and fans can also check themselves a bit.

This dude cared, and the stupid, never ending, mountain of stories and agendas pushed on him was suffocating.

It's too much of an insane circus and it needs to be dialed down. These guys are people, not robots.

As someone who had this injury (total rupture) a few years back, i feel so bad for him. Im not the same and never will be but hopefully he can get there, he has the best physio/surgeons etc.. i strongly believe it was related to first injury.. so sad.

Yeah, you're never the same after that.

I tore my achilles playing football in high school. I was still able to run well enough to get a scholarship for track in college, but I've never been the same runner.

This sucks, man.

This, IMO, was partially fueled by the dubs being so vague about his injury, probably for gamesmanship. If they had come out and said it's a grade 2* sprain there probably would have been a lot less narratives written about it.

* just a guess since that fits the timetable, they obv still haven't clarified what it was.

Of course it was. The guy could barely walk few days ago. And there was that constant pressure from the media. Even some reports suggesting that some Warriors players didn't understand why KD wasn't playing when guys such as Klay, Iggy and Looney were playing despite injuries.

You trying to say that team doctors don't press their finger on the scale to push it towards what's good for the team instead of what's good for the player? Talk about stupid narratives.

But there's a fundamental misunderstanding of who "they" in your case is. A guy like KD is seeing multiple specialists that some of whom are paid for by the dubs, some of whom are paid for by his insurance and some by himself or his agency

These doctors aren't infallible, and ultimately it's clear the enough docs said KD was ok that he felt that he was taking an acceptable risk. It's not just the dubs fault here, there's a lot to go around and even then all this shit is hindsight 20/20

KD couldn't take a dump without someone making a story of it, it's an insane situation, I kinda feel sick feeding it by watching all this media crap.

The whole system kinda makes me sick right now thinking about it. I doubt you can really change anything about it, but Boogie Cousins was spot on about it after the game.

I enjoy the sport, but aspects of it are seriously fucked up.

The idea that some people can't even understand why he would come back ... because the idea of him caring about the team/his teammates was so foreign of a concept in the narrative that's been built up ... is just gross.

I mean Dominique Wilkins is literally the only player to actually come back from this injury ok.

There is a 99% chance one of the best modern players in the NBA was lost for good tonight. And for what? So the Warriors wouldn't go down in 5?

I think a few were but there was a lot going down all at once, raptors were on a run, it looks like a defensive take away and a fast break bucket, so they were cheering, but then GS fouled so they cheered the foul call while KD was down on the opposite end, they cheered him getting back up to feet, then there was a standing O for him as he walked to the locker room. Definitely some Idiots in the crowd though.

Maybe KD can adapt with having ball much less to dribble.. at least he have all the right tool for still being really effective. Cant compare him with all other dude that just have normal body shape and tools.

Same. Almost everything about this is just dark. Raps fans. GS management/health. The media and "fans" pressuring him. Etc.

As drama free as the Raps players themselves are (and good on them for maintaining that), this series is just carving all that controversial shit around them :/

I hope. But his shake creates a lot of space for him. Plus vertical jump is key for jump shots.

It's just a bad injury for anyone.

Of course you 🤡 lol...

First off, that's the players livelihood and Warriors obviously would also love to have him there long term so no, they don't want to risk him getting a serious injury.

Multiple doctors, trainers, etc needed to clear him. This isn't some singular shady ass doctor that wants to lose his job over misdiagnoses.

You're insane

And Nique didn't really come back, he wasn't the same player he just was savvy enough to get buckets but the burst was mostly gone. And really he had one last year before he just couldn't do it anymore, and was also oft injured which is now the primary concern for KD, how does not being able to load bear as much on that leg impact his ability to stay healthy?
They cheared him going down. Anything else is economic anxiety hand-waive levels of bullshit.

Dude was probably gonna bounce after this season. They didn't care for his long term health because they don't rely on him for their livelihood.

Rewatching the 1st quarter:

He clearly was not ready to play. No doubt in my mind. Not sure how he convinced team brass/doctors to get on the floor.

He walked a bit gingerly on the leg, and looks down at his right leg several times. He knew he wasn't right, but wanted to play anyways.

This is one of those weird moments in NBA history where you wonder what might have been. If KD doesn't play, do the Raps win in 5?

Talk about that. We'll never know if KD was what GSW needed to shoot 100% from 3 in the 1st quarter. Maybe without KD and his spacing, Steph and Klay get heavily contested 3s and that plummets down to 30-40%.

He should have never been allowed on the court. What a tragedy. Hopefully he can defy the odds like Wilkins, but that's extremely unlikely.
