Apparently Super Mario Sunshine doesnt have a good reptutation or at least people think it was not a good Super Mario game.

I disagree. I loved the Hub, that was similar to Mario 64.
I loved the color palette.
I loved the plattformer stages.

The only thing I didnt like that much was the "cleaning" mechanic.

Sunshine is one of those games I've never finished, but what I did play (about 80% if the game) I absolutely loved. I could never really get into 64 and the Galaxy games made me motion sick.

I could never clean that beach with the electric slime in time.

Sunshine had some questionable things in it but honestly it was still pretty much a solid 9/10 imo. Mario is one of the few series where every game is perfect or close to being perfect.

If there's one thing the game still deserves praise for to this very day it's controls. Super Mario Sunshine easily has the best controls of any Mario game.

But it has a lot of questionable late-game levels and blue coins can fuck off.

I enjoyed the game when I played it. I agree that an emphasis more on platforming and less cleaning of goop would have probably given the game a warmer reception.

One of the best showcases on the Cube though. The color palette and tropical resort-like setting was rather nice.

The cleaning mechanic and that jetpack makes it a dumpster fire for me, could never get into it, but I admit I couldn't get over that and couldn't play it for long so I can't properly judge it. I enjoyed Mario 64 though.

Until I play Odyssey, it's my favorite 3D Mario title. I enjoyed the new setting. Sunshine levels were very good & diverse for the most part. But I'll admit the late game design is questionable & the "reward" for collecting all 120 Shine Sprites is not worth it. Mario controls better than he did in 64 but something didn't feel right about his controls, I'm not sure how to better articulate it.

It has the same problem a lot of Zelda games have: It's judged by the standards of it's own series rather than games as a whole. It has wonderful movement, creative levels, and interesting objectives, but it has weak spots that are more noticeable than the other 3D games. I'd rate it extremely high as a video game, but would say I prefer 64 and the Galaxy games.

Eh, maybe. It depends on how lowly you think of it.

It never felt "right" to me. The tropical theme, the watergun, the voice acting... it was just strange and unappealing in ways every other Mario game are not.

I never had a problem with this game. I actually didn't realise people didn't like it until a few years ago.

In some ways it was a disappointment after 64 but it grew on me and I kept coming back to it after the galaxy games didn't click with me.

I think far and wide the game actually does have a positive reputation, there's plenty of good in there and the base gameplay is great as expected from Mario.
It just has the most noticeable issues of the 3D series so in the grand scheme of Mario it becomes the whipping boy.

Of course it is. People will dumpster it because it's not in the same caliber as some of the best Mario games to them, but just because something isn't a 6/5 doesn't mean it's bad.

Too many times people express their opinions without granularity.

The problem is the holiday theme wasn't epic enough compared to 64, creepy levels like Boo's house and other epic ones like the clock level and rainbow ride. I struggle to remember any of the levels in Sunshine. It was so disappointing waiting about 5 years after 64 and Sunshine didn't feel ambitious enough. Was a water gun the best idea they had?

The game was better than its reputation when it was considered flaming garbage.

Nowadays I see it moving up in the world and being compared to Galaxy. At that point it is no longer better than its reputation.

I liked how it chose a theme and stuck to it; its better than a grass world, a desert, an ice world, a forest world etc

It's gotten a resurgence of appreciation lately which I don't understand at all.

The game just had a low amount of worlds with an equally low amount of variety among in them (visually and otherwise), and there are a few that are just kinda way too simplistic for me in terms of platforming, i.e. Pianta Village and the Ghost House. I think its inventive mechanics went largely unappreciated. This was the successor to Super Mario 64, and it turned out to be a huge step-down.

It's a game that I really want to replay, so hopefully Nintendo will eventually remaster it. I know I went into it wanting Mario 64-2, which obviously ended up impacting my feelings on it. With that said,I never hated the game. It's still a 3D Mario. I'd rather play Sunshine than any other 3D platformer not named Mario. It's still head and shoulders above the rest of the genre.

I think it's reputation is pretty accurate. The level designs simply aren't as good as 64 or Galaxy, and actually using FLUDD can be frustrating at times, even with it's potential as a great addition for platforming. The camera is really poor even compared to 64, there's a lot of strange design decisions, the whole thing just felt rushed.

That being said, it's still a okay game. But in a franchise of fantastic games, just being okay isn't high praise, and brings with it a lot of disappointment and missed opportunity.

It gets shit on waaaay more than it should. Only huge issue with the game for me is blue coins. Everything else is minor gripes.

odyssey has the best controls now, by a long shot

It has a solid foundation and a great moveset, but is quite obviously unfinished (low number of levels, some lack of polish on the levels that are there, blue coin filler, placeholder-level enemy designs, etc)

Despite all that I really liked playing through it. It really shines with using advanced moves (especially the Side Sommersault/Flip) and once you get used to how the camera works when hovering with the nozzle.

The boat physics in the last level are absolutely atrocious, though. Counter-intuitive and just wrong.

Edit: This review by Matthewmatosis does a magnificent job of describing the games problems and triumphs in extensive detail:

It certainly is a good game, but a bit different than the original.
I often go back and play Mario 64 before I would Sunshine, but I think its reputation has gotten better as years go by.

Sunshine is maybe the Mario game I love the most, followed closely by 3D World and Galaxy 2.

It took the Mario 64 formula to perfection, with the camera as the only exception. It's still bad.

I enjoyed it a lot. It was the first 3D Mario game I played so I didn't have any experience with Super Mario 64 going in. Though saying that, I finally got to play Super Mario 64 (in around 2005 I think it was) and didn't like it all that much.

Utterly loved it, not gonna deny, it sits lower than say 64 or Galaxy as it was locked too much to one mechanic in FLUDD. Still, I would always wholeheartedly recommend it.

It's one of those games that has some huge flaws, but is still a great game all-around. Sunshine is my favorite Mario game, so I'm willing to look past all its flaws. I find the tropical setting to be extremely appealing.

Yeah, I'd say so.

I'm pretty critical of it, but that didn't mean I didn't rack up like a 100+ hours as a kid, and it's really impressive for a game with so few core levels. The hub level being amazing helps, Mario handles like a dream and the world's are generally pretty fun to explore. I just wish there was more. Blue Coins are without a doubt, the worst case of padding in a Mario game, and they kill 100% replays.

I think Mario Sunshine is exactly as good as its reputation. That is, it's a good, flawed game that occasionally has flashes of top-tier quality. Periodically there will be a shift in the consensus--sometimes people seem to appreciate the game more, sometimes they go overboard and seem to hate the game--but in this case the truth really is somewhere in the middle.

It's hard to say. I suspect the more "hardcore" fans liked it better, since they were able to get past some of the more frustrating aspects of the game that less-skilled players would have perceived as obstacles to their enjoyment, such as the camera controls. Veterans of the series and people who'd previously reached the SM64 skill ceiling (relatively speaking) wouldn't have had as many issues, but its shortcomings are undeniable; the camera controls first and foremost again, which make much of the trickier platforming sections hell, with hard-to-predict jumps and objects obstructing the view in more closed areas. There are some very punishing situations where you have to restart challenges from the very beginning without any sort of checkpointing if you don't do well (the casino secret star, for example, which has a long setup sequence just to enter the actual level). Some ideas feel halfbaked, like the rollercoaster with the terrible missile controls and lack of aim, or the pachinko level with weird awful physics that push you towards the center for some weird reason. There are a ton of "timeout situations" in the game - having to collect blue coins before a timer runs out, having to wait for platforms to align, Yoshi running out of juice, etc. Some of the hotel's and other shines were somewhat obscure and hard to figure out without it actually being fun.

The FLUDD gimmick was also very love-or-hate from what I've seen, although I personally was fine with it. Aiming FLUDD was a pain sometimes though, specially while moving, which they expected you to do both during levels and the "chase fake Mario" sequences.

All of those are things I see stopping "newbie" players dead on their tracks, but longtime fans would have no problems dealing with.

it introduced the worst mario character ever, Bowser Jr. for that, it cannot be heralded as anything other than dumpster fire

I had played every Mario game up until this one when it came out. It was also the last Mario game I've played to this day. Didn't even play much of it, maybe a couple hours. It really didn't click for me. Don't think it was this game in particular honestly that necessarily soured me, I think I was just done with Mario at that point and never felt the desire to return as of yet.

Honestly I really enjoyed the game. Probably more so than either of the Galaxy games. That's not to say it's without fault but the vibe of the holiday resort was refreshing and really helped make up for some of the shortcomings.

It also has some extremely difficult platforming sections should that float your boat. Something 64 was lacking IMO

If the bosses and Corona Mountain weren't so awful I probably would've actually liked the game overall. But no as is, it deserves it's current reputation.

I can't judge it fairly because I haven't played it myself. But through watching the Giant Bomb play through currently airing it definitely seems to have a fair few issues that had been ironed out by the time Galaxy and 3D World came about.
It feels like a good game trapped in between a revolutionary one and the ones that finally cracked how to craft a 3D Mario.

It came out at the right time for me. I was 12 years old then (time flies, it's a 2002 game? Djeez) and I absolutely loved it. The music, the atmosphere, ... I didn't play Mario 64, so I couldn't really compare it with that.

I still look back fondly on Super Mario Sunshine.
