Despite being presented through a technomagical lens, to me, Evangelion's treatment of the subject reads entirely genuine. The End of Evangelion especially feels like a course correction of a show created by a man who, just for a moment, thought that he solved his own depression, only to immediately regress, as one often does.
If it's ever going to feel real, it has to me all-encompassing as it is in this series.

Finally about to start Eva. Are they watching it in english or japanese? Or are they just discussing both?

I haven't been listening (still not sure if I wanna make time to rewatch alongside it), but I'm pretty sure there's a mix? It sounded like Austin watched subbed at least, going by his tweets about how they don't translate a lot of on-screen writing unless you're watching the dub.

I think Austin is watching dubbed with the subtitles on, not sure about the others but they are talking about both

Thanks. I think I'll watch in english and leave subtitles on.

Is it starting to get weird that Natalie still hasn't announced her job

I guess not, though her Twitter says something new coming soon so pretty sure she intended to announce it.

It could be that whatever she's working on hasn't been publicly announced yet so she can't talk about it. She said the job wasn't game development, but there are plenty of other startups or new projects that would hire people months before being revealed.

That Lu Bu battle is proof that strategy games need more raid boss mechanics.

It's also proof that more people need to play total Waaaaghhammer. That's a game built on that stuff!

That said, i wish I enjoyed Spellforce 3 more than i did. 2 was a great blend of strategy and RPG shenanigans with bosses and everything.

For sure. 3 Kingdoms is great and i'm glad CA have found a way to bring over more interesting mechanics to the historical titles.

I still wish it wasn't limited to only hero units but it's a good first step and makes the combat much more interesting.

This suggestion seems kinda at odds with itself. Of course the hero units in a Three Kingdoms game are gonna be uber-powerful, as it suits the story. But not actual history. Otherwise, what historical games should have crazy units like you want?

It is true that real life does not easily make for awe inspiring big boss battles. But I wonder how much realism you can lose in order to make the game more interesting to play. I wonder if they would continue to make a "romance" option for future games, like a Shogun 3 for example.

I'm not just talking combat strength but abilites and specialisations. Like some spearmen units buffing other, nearby units and stuff like that.

My big problem with most historical titles, after having played them for hundreds of hours, is that as soon as you get your first shock cavalry the game becomes trivially easy aside from sieges. You just need some infantry to hold the line, and horses to rush into the back of the attackers to win. And since basic units tend to be universal (every faction has the same spear unit, for example) it's a strategy that works for every faction.

The way 3 Kingdoms handles Generals/Heroes and their retinues is a solution to that. Generals tend to specialize in troop type and the buffs they bring also help with encouraging more army diversity.

As a personal preference, i'd still like a bit more complexity than is present in 3K though (talking strictly about battles, the strategy map is complex enough). Especially since more specialised factions also make for more replayability since you learn new playstyles with different facitons you play. This is something 3 Kingdoms does on the strategy map by giving different factions unique abilites. I'd like that for the battles as well, even if it's a bit less "realistic".

I hope they do. It's a nice compromise.

They could vary up what's given the "romantisation" treatment too. 3K has many larger than life personalities. Other era's might serve other myths.

They could probably fantasize a general medieval Europe thing with historical figures, but in that case there isn't a singular text to pull from like there is with 3K.

I think there's a danger of creating stereotypes like with Civ and their various depictions of different civilizations, but humans also fought with relatively similar weapons and styles so it can seem very similar without some sort of "spicing up". There's only so far you can make a French pikeman different from a German pikeman. I'm not exactly sure what a medieval Europe Total War can do to make more personality in the battlefield, but maybe they could transfer that personality to the strategic layer, like CK2 with their various lords and whatever.

The problem with pulling from CK2 is that Total War has the exact opposite focus. CK2 is a game where wars happen because of characters (literally, characters' claims are the reason you are allowed to go to war at all) whereas Total War is... y'know... about total conquest. 3K dresses up the conquest differently depending on the faction you chose, but ultimately the goal never changes; the characters exist in service of war, just like any other Total War.

It's what I've found disappointing about 3K. I was hoping the interplay of characters would change things up, basically transforming factions overnight. But instead it's just a different set of stats pushing the same conquests and goals as before. Like, the more I play it, the less the characters in 3K feel like characters.

It's why I kinda prefer the way Total Warhammer approaches its characters. Because rulers are immortal, the factions become the characters, leading to much more divergent interactions on the campaign map depending who is dominant, and giving diverse playstyles for the player, depending on which faction they chose. I feel like 3K could surpass this if characters defined their factions, but they don't (and without major changes, can't).

Eva hot take alert: the monster-of-the-week and slice-of-life stuff is excellent, every thing else is pretty poor from ep 17ish onwards.

I was really surprised by how low they were on that part of those episodes, especially after how high they were on the Jet Alone episode which is the most monster of the week of them all. I really enjoy the slife of life stuff as well. Maybe the CW-related issues dragged down the whole impression of the episodes.

I just watched these episodes and this is some real chilling stuff. I've seen the whole series three times before + the movies twice, but these episodes never fail for me. I'm also watching the new dub after only having seen the original Japanese and the Shinji VA does a real good job here with the blood curling screams.

I'm curious to hear their impressions for these episodes.

When I went to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier it was just me and one other guy in the screen, then a busload of elderly people came in and I'll never forget that old Irish lady saying "is that Robert Redford?!?!". Probably hadn't seen him in a movie in decades lol.

I thought the internet found this out years ago.

I also didn't recognize him, but I also never seen him in anything besides winter soldier. It's times like this where I feel like I relate more to older gen z folks than other millenials.

Fuck, I haven't had time to watch, so I need to get through 14-19 before the next episode is out tomorrow.

Sync Ratios is only up to episode 16.

Rob's back on board!

Also he only watched episodes 18 and 19 a couple hours ago, so the podcast probably isn't going up until pretty late (if at all today).

I really need to watch The Americans. I keep meaning to but then just rewatch Curb again or some shit.
