From IGN detailing the New IP:

Gotham Knights Developer Seemingly Starting Work on a Brand New AAA Game - IGN

Gotham Knights developer WB Montreal's next game will be a brand new AAA IP, according to new job listings.

Quick rundown of events leading up to this:

Back in 2018, it was revealed on a podcast by a game designer over at WB Montreal that he had moved onto a major DC console game, which turned out to be Gotham Knights, onto a new project and revealed that there were multiple in development at the studio. This is the only video with said audio, as it was taken down.

Last year in October there was a job posting for a "new AAA IP" on WB Montreal's website, that came months after the reveal of Gotham Knights.

WB Montreal Possibly Making New DC IP Alongside Gotham Knights (Job Ad) Rumor

WB Montreal posted a job ad recently that states they are looking for programmers for a “New AAA IP.” If you guys remember, a game designer at WB Montreal let it slip a couple years ago that they “moved on from their main DC console game” onto a different project...

A week ago, they posted another job ad for a 3C Game Designer for a "third person open world action game". Considering that Gotham Knights is almost done with development, and the explicit language of the job ad, it most likely is for their second project.

WB Games Montreal, a division of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE), seeks a Game Designer to be responsible for designing and driving development of player characters for a third-person open world action game.

The Game Designer will be responsible for creating clear and actionable design documentation that supports the high-level vision of the Creative Director, and Game Director. They will be the primary point of contact for the features they design and will be responsible for coordinating the work of multiple disciplines into a cohesive, fun and high-quality gaming experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Takes ownership of specific features or systems such as player navigation, game metrics, and works closely with Programming and Animation departments to drive development towards the vision laid out by the Game Director and Creative Director.
  • Creates and maintains living design documentation that keep pace with the project's progress and accurately conveys all necessary information to Design, Animation, Art, and Programming.
  • Build sufficient knowledge of the scripting languages and design tools of the Unreal engine and in-house tools to build and iterate on player-hero features in-game.
  • Displays communication skills sufficient to align and motivate the Programmers, Animators, Technical Animators, and other Designers working on their feature.
  • Support production teammates to help organize tasks and dependencies relevant to features.

Now, an insider into some of the ongoings of WB games is hinting that the second project might be Superman.

For reference, this is the same person that leaked WB Montreal's new Batman game was a reboot focusing on the Batfam and the Court, and that Rocksteady was working on Suicide Squad.

WB Montreal's Batman game will reboot the Arkhamverse, spawning a new DC Video Game Universe including Rocksteady's next title.

EDIT: Pat Redding, creative director at WB Montreal, has been liking a few tweets about Superman games recently

Doesn't really seem like the kind of studio with the resume you'd expect to be working on 2 big games simultaneously

Yeah I'm not getting excited for a possible wb Montreal Superman game when it's possible it gets cancelled just like Suicide Squad and that Damian game they worked on.

Can't really say I'm excited without having played Gotham Knights first. The RPG elements of that one are a bit of a turnoff. Can't imagine a Superman game with the same kind of mechanics.

A metroidvania-like depowering a hero before the game really starts could work well. Then very slowly over time start adding powers back. A fully powered supes still doesn't sound appealing.

The IGN tweet is mentioning a new ip? a Superman game was long overdue tbh. It's been so long since the last one.

2022 is still a long ways off, if anything it feels like now is when they would REALLY be grinding on it
It was supposed to launch late this year, the push seems like it was for QA purposes. They've got a staff of like 400+ people, two teams working on games simultaneously doesn't seem that far fetched. Especially when you got studios like Insomniac out there pumping out as many games as quickly as they do

You know now that they mention it, why was Gotham Knights not at E3 in any form? Shouldn't that game be like really close to release?

Gotham Knight is coming out 10 years after Arkham Origins. Will DC even still be a company in 2033 or whenever this releases?

Without getting into the credibility of the rumour, it could be that they've got it in pre-production with a small group while most of the team is focusing on getting GK out the door. Would allow them to transition their staff between projects more smoothly without laying as many people off

I hope it's true.

I want to see what an AAA superman game could look like.

I play the Insomniac Spider-Man games and envision something similar. Go with a vintage power-level, or model it after the 90s-2000s animated Superman, or even Smallville. Make him the strongest man on Earth, able to lift cars and all that, but don't bother making him a Greek God able to survive nuclear bombs.

I look forward to getting hyped for this in 2032 as WB twitter slowly teases it, only for it to somehow turn out to be a GaaS/MP game focus yet again.

So, supposing this is true, how far away are we from a reveal? 1, 2 years away? At least it's good to know it's being worked on

The only good way to do a Superman game is to make it a puzzle game. Like, how to you save Person A and Person B? That could be interesting.

Otherwise it just sucks.

Thats not what a new IP means.
Yes it does. DC Comics isn't the IP, the characters are. So if you're working on a different hero or team, that means it's a new IP. Rocksteady job postings before it was revealed to be Suicide Squad had "new IP" in them. LinkedIn profiles for WB Montreal devs had "new IP" in them before being switched to Gotham Knights upon announcement.
