50-75% is a tolerable threshold for me. 100% is usually pretty gross, but I can make exceptions (Guilty Gear, for example).

I love the anime! However I want the female characters to be treated with respect and well written plus no fanservice unless it's actual equal opportunity.

Nier Automata is comically anime. I don't know why anyone would consider it to be light anime - the main character is a maid fetish-bot and Adam and Eve are basically twin Sephiroths.
It doesn't use the anime artstyle. Also not sure if maid fetish has anything to do with anime. Western pornography started it after all.

The character designs are anime even if the art style doesn't look like Tales. Not to mention the writing, which is as anime as it gets.

Depends on the game?

I unironically love anime and I tend to lean towards the 70s-90s style as opposed to the newer, louder stuff. That existed back then, but it's just too new school these days.

I love what Xenoblade 2 did. Everything. That game is a blatant love letter to everything anime. It does it so well.

Cut me off at like... 8/10. I'm also okay with 10/10 as long as there aren't creepy shit involving minors.

Old school Phantasy Star anime is cool but a lot of modern otaku crap that dominates the Vita really turns me off.

I guess I like all sorts of levels of Anime. Love The Last of Us and I also love Blazblue. Any level is fine as long as it's done well.

100% full unadulterated anime if possible. Especially cute girls do cute things if possible.

It's why the Yakuza series is so charming to me. So much charm and cheese and madness all in one complete package.

Its steeped in anime tropes

I'm only near the end of ending A so I can't say too much about the game, but I seriously don't remember a lot of anime tropes. 2B's characterization is one, but anything else?

How do you define anime character design? Big boobs, revealing clothes and long legs? That's what western games look like from last century (see The Elder Scrolls' cover).

The artwork are anime style. It's still basically anime but recreated in 3D engine.
Just curious, how do you think about this:
tactics_ogre_key_art_1_white_background.jpg

Same artist, same trademark Yoshida thighs. I never heard anyone says Tactics Ogre is anime.

Half and half for me. The game has to be something really special like Persona and Gravity Rush for me to get a game with full on anime. Nier is the perfect balance for me were a lot of the anime-ness is in the character design and over the top tone but avoids all the boring, bad, creepy and lazy tropes. Then there's Metal Gear which is a rollarcoaster of anime that goes between light to full anime which also works.

Ending A is barely a third of the game. You wanna get through it asap. Its not bad anime, in fact its the most emotional and impactful a game has been to me in a while, but its still very anime.

Yeah, Attack on Titan in general is as sexless as Resident Evil and its amazing. Is there ever a fanservice scene in the animes? I can't remember a single one.

I don't watch the show but I remember seeing this posted online.

Though I guess how much of that you consider fanservice depends on the individual.

I like your anime scale OP. It'd be fun to flesh out into a full graphic:

No one on the development team has ever seen DBZ tier:
- The Last of Us
- Call of Duty
- FIFA
- Grand Theft Auto

There's at least a katana or two somewhere in the game tier:
- Symphony of the Night
- Ocarina of Time

Undercover anime tier:
- Dark Souls
- MGS1
- Mother series
- Yakuza

Normies wouldn't be caught dead playing tier:
- Nier: Automata
- Bayonetta
- later MGS
- Katamari Damaci

~Aguu? Bakana! Kawaii Desu~:
- Persona
- Metal Gear Rising
- Visual novels
- Arcsys games

More anime then most animes:
- Wonderful 101

I'm an anime fan, but one from the 90s. So I didn't get into anime because of slice of life crap or moe/otaku bait cute girl crap like modern anime fans. I'm not into waifu stuff.

Same, but I also really love the 80s stuff. I'm a fan of gore and horror so the gorey anime stuff is great to me.

Parasyte is one of the few modern anime I reeeeeally dig because it went back to the gorey stuff I miss. Parasyte is awesome.

I love the Fatal Fury anime (all 3 of them), Vampire Hunter D (1985), Berserk (particularly the original anime though all the new ones are admittedly good too), Ninja Scroll, Akira, Battle Royal High School, etc.

I also like Sword Art Online. I'm interested in One Punch Man and a few other new ones too. But like you said, I'm not into a lot of the newer stuff.

Light dose, which seems to be a rarity these days.

Examples of what I consider to be a light dose of anime:

Metal Gear Solid 1 (not Twin Snakes)
Star Ocean/2
Suikoden
Legend of Dragoon
Resident Evil (it may seem realistic at first glance, but the psuedoscience plot and character design have a dash of anime to them)
Parasite Eve

Half and half or a bit over that is also nice.

Full anime is usually never enjoyable to me. Full anime to me is stuff like Danganronpa, Senren Kagura, Bayonetta, Twin Snakes (at least the changed scenes as outlined in the OP's video). The exception would be adaptations of shonen anime I enjoy.

I got into anime for the long form storytelling, the cool aesthetic. strong mechanic designs, creative and stylish cinematography, and mecha.

This is kinda how I feel. I watched anime from the '80s and '90s and the transition into 2000s-era anime with its over-emphasis on high schoolers, waifus and the fetishization of youth just broke it for me. There hasn't been a new anime in like a decade that didn't piss me off or alienate me almost immediately.

I'm trying to think back to the last anime show I saw in full and I think it was Gun X Sword.

Nier: Automata is the perfect example of equal opportunity sex appeal. For every scantily clad lady there's a topless svelt dude and you get an achievement for playing for an hour in 9S's underwear.

Just look at these coy boys:

lmao every time, cuz it's not like I can't have problems with a game I still love or anything. Also if you read what I said again --

Which I absolutely feel the gals in N:A were well written and while I have problems with some aspects of their designs they're still more tasteful and world-fitting than a looott of other bullshit I've seen and at least they give me Adam & Eve and 9S in short shorts which is more equal opportunity than usual so I will absolutely take it.

Edit: Yeah, see Odeko understands!

Yeah this works for me. Although I would put Katamari Damacy in more anime than most. Maybe even so much anime it should radiate and everyone should bask in its glow.

My biggest issue with Nier's designs is that it feels like A2 was deliberately designed to evoke the imagery of a sexual assault victim. I can't look at her style of dress, especially the shredded stockings, and not feel like she's meant to look like someone who escaped straight out of a rape manga. It feels too fetishy.

Like, I know Kaine's outfit in the first game was provocative, but at least it kind of looked like something a person would actually choose to put on, even if it's stupid.

You don't like Ping Pong, The Tatami Galaxy, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Mushishi, Shirobako or Space Dandy?

It always bogs my mind when people only attribute fan-servise to anime when there has always been plenty of anime without it, and when other medias also have products full of fan-servise.

(I don't mind it if it's not cringy like the likes of Xenoblade 2).
Though I've tried Tokyo Xanadu ex the other day and just the beginning had me eye rolling to infinite.

I can toootaallly understand other people getting that read off of her -- however that never even crossed my mind until seeing you talk about it before on the sexualization thread. To me it always read as 'we're gonna have her look worn down but in a sexy way' - which is still ridiculous and could be way better but at least she's cool as heck so it makes it easier to overlook. ;w;

Not a game, but Food Wars is good with this... the equal opportunity part. No one is safe when it comes to those orgasmic scenes they use to show the food tastes good.

True, but most fan service can't go that far anyway.

And I'm sure there's people out there that are fine with her being skinless...

The ridiculous sexualisation of female characters infesting character design, rendering anyone from a knight to a priestess to a schoolgirl as a vehicle for a short skirt and stockings as a default template, makes it all a bit tedious for me at the moment. I like JRPGs etc and sure, the anime storytelling cliches of adolescents growing up again and again in some titles are at least as tired as the revenge fantasies of their western counterparts, but the current character design templates for the female cast members are just tedious. No, it's not a problem to have thighs/cleavage etc on show on characters where being sexy is part of the appeal. Yes, if that's applied to every young woman as an industry standard (and even worse, to children), it's a problem.

It's just as much a creativity issue. Loads of the Japanese games with the combat mechanics I like, from Valkyria Chronicles and Fire Emblem to Ys and Trails and Monster Hunter suffer from it. I don't see why female warriors have to be in combat lingerie and corsets as if they have to justify their existence in the story as cheesecake first. I love the mechanics but feel like I have to wade through this stale sexualised bullshit design on half the characters. It's managed to turn sexy into boring as hell.

I don't think that's quite what Taro was going for with that design, although with the stockings I can see where you're coming from. I think the reason A2's design is so battered and deteriorating so much is just to plausibly hide the reveal that she's a precursor model to 2B. The moment where she cuts her hair and starts to look more and more like 2B would be a lot less powerful if the truth hadn't been hiding beneath our noses under a thin layer of dirt and battle damage the whole time.

A2 doesn't wear stockings. The black parts are torn off parts of her skin to show age and how she has been on the run from YoRHa for years. Her design is supposed to give off the impressions that she's more of a hobo and personally the shape of her torn off skin makes me think of a boxer.

I wouldn't put it past Yoko Taro, he's done more controversial stuff, but a rape victim doesn't suit her character at all and if it did it, it wouldn't be fetishy.
