Comedies are one of my favorite genres of movie. Ive loved them ever since i was little when my dad would watch ones that were far beyond my age rating, and we would laugh at them together. Movies like Almost Heroes, Dumb and Dumber, and National Lampoon's Vacation. Im sure there are other lovers of the genre out there that might want to share with each other some of their favorites, so lets have'em.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Perhaps one of the most impressively photographed comedies of all time, it is a dark satire from Stanley Kubrick about the paradoxical absurdity of nuclear weapons as deterrents. It lampoons the idea that in order for people to feel safe against each other they must immerse themselves in a sea of apocalyptic weapons that can cause their very end, something known as Mutually Assured Destruction. And as the movie shows, the world has indeed gone M.A.D.
Screens showing off the beautiful photography:
The movie has great comedic performances by George C Scott and Peter Sellers. Sellers specifically plays 3 different rolls and was payed over half the movie's budget to do so. Kubrick is famously quoted as saying "I got three for the price of six".
The comedy in the movie is mostly delivered in a deadpan way, letting the absurdity of the scenario in which is it spoke be the source of the humor, it has a few over the top moments though, including one of the best death scenes in cinema history, as Major Kong rides a nuke down to its target
The Naked Gun
While Dr. Strangelove was absurd for the sake of satire, The Naked Gun is just absurd for absurdity's sake, i wont go into asmuch detail for this one as i feel i went overboard above, but i saw this movie when i was little with my dad and it has stuck in my mind ever since. While i love Dr. Strangelove partly for the quality of the film making, the reason i love this is because theres so many jokes that just come at you a mile a minute, including subtle things that you might miss if you're not paying attention. This is goofy movie making done correctly
like when Frank's airbags go off, they bump the shifter, and then his car drives down the street
or when Frank and Priscilla have a fun time at the cinema
theres just far to many great jokes to list here
so what are some of your favorite comedies?
