Comedies are one of my favorite genres of movie. Ive loved them ever since i was little when my dad would watch ones that were far beyond my age rating, and we would laugh at them together. Movies like Almost Heroes, Dumb and Dumber, and National Lampoon's Vacation. Im sure there are other lovers of the genre out there that might want to share with each other some of their favorites, so lets have'em.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Perhaps one of the most impressively photographed comedies of all time, it is a dark satire from Stanley Kubrick about the paradoxical absurdity of nuclear weapons as deterrents. It lampoons the idea that in order for people to feel safe against each other they must immerse themselves in a sea of apocalyptic weapons that can cause their very end, something known as Mutually Assured Destruction. And as the movie shows, the world has indeed gone M.A.D.

Screens showing off the beautiful photography:
The camera looks up at Jack D. Ripper to represent his imposing presence

The president and his generals sit around an allegorical "poker" table while gambling over the fate of the world

The movie has great comedic performances by George C Scott and Peter Sellers. Sellers specifically plays 3 different rolls and was payed over half the movie's budget to do so. Kubrick is famously quoted as saying "I got three for the price of six".

The comedy in the movie is mostly delivered in a deadpan way, letting the absurdity of the scenario in which is it spoke be the source of the humor, it has a few over the top moments though, including one of the best death scenes in cinema history, as Major Kong rides a nuke down to its target

The Naked Gun

While Dr. Strangelove was absurd for the sake of satire, The Naked Gun is just absurd for absurdity's sake, i wont go into asmuch detail for this one as i feel i went overboard above, but i saw this movie when i was little with my dad and it has stuck in my mind ever since. While i love Dr. Strangelove partly for the quality of the film making, the reason i love this is because theres so many jokes that just come at you a mile a minute, including subtle things that you might miss if you're not paying attention. This is goofy movie making done correctly

like when Frank's airbags go off, they bump the shifter, and then his car drives down the street

or when Frank and Priscilla have a fun time at the cinema

theres just far to many great jokes to list here

so what are some of your favorite comedies?

Dumb and Dumber is still a masterpiece almost 25 years later. A great example of dumb characters but clever script.

Needs the Criterion treatment tbh.

Black Dynamite is probably my favorite comedy of all time. The movie is packed to the brim with tons of jokes both in dialogue and visuals, and the breakneck pace allows it to hit basically every premise to comprehensively parody old blaxploitation films. It's an hour and a half of pure comic joy.

The first two that popped in my mind would be LA Citée de la Peur (French) and Der Schuh des Manitou (german), but that's probably because I grew up with them (like we still regularly quote the first one with friends).

Well, the first movies, thr first thing I thought of was Gintama.

As far as the "spoof" comedy flicks go, Scary Movie 2 and Not Another Teen Movie are some of my guilty pleasures :)

The Odd Couple. I absolutely love this movie, and made me love Jack Lemon and Walter Mathau so much.

I think my all-time favorite remains Monty Python & the Holy Grail. I've rewatched it recently (for the 10th time? But it's been about 10 years since I last saw it) and it's just amazingly well made. The film looks really good too and both works as a sketch-movie and as a linear story. I also rewatched Life of Brian which, while also brilliant, really doesn't come close for me in terms of comedy. It has a bit more heart and is the better movie probably, but for me it might be down to the setting. I don't particularly care for LoB's setting whereas I always adore medieval fantasy type settings.

Some other favorites would be:

Airplane!
Top Secret!
Anchorman
Dumb & Dumber

I still really enjoy the Producers, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs... Brooks was the first tha came to mind, especially the Producers, but, honestly, I still have a soft spot for Life of Brian above anything else.

Young Frankenstein is my favorite comedy of forever. I've been watching that movie for near 40 years and it still makes me laugh out loud.

Airplane is right there too.

What happens in vega's: the bowl of popcorn had me dying,

Ride Along: The whole setup was just great,

Horrible bosses: not the strongest movie but still entertaining at the end,

Bounty hunters: hunting your ex down lamo,

Where are the millers: really really fun movie,

The break-up: drawing a line in house just made me laugh so hard.

The heat: Not the greatest movie but still a fun trip.

The boss: liked this movie a lot as it reminds me of my sister, pretty darn funny also.

The proposal really good movie with that Deadpool guy and Sandra Bullock.

The hangover enjoyed this movie a lot, not so much the sequals.

Just married: had a few good laughs

I’ll probaby take shit for this but Your Highness I really liked some elements of it a lot, and I laugh hard at them. Justin Theroux as Lezar was brilliant, comedy in a fantasy setting by way of Bowie. I guess at one point in the movie he is wresting a thing on his head because he thought it fit, some random metal thing.

It mostly suffered because Danny and DGG were not ready to make a fantasy especially as a comedy, and relied to heavy for pushing offensive humor of the time.

I think if you had the guys who are making Halloween make that movie now it would probably be brilliant but they already made that movie.

All the Pitch Perfect movies and Night at the Museum. Mainly because of Rebel Wilson. She is hilarious.
Blast from the Past
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Dirty Grandpa
Dogma

Pretty much any dumb comedy. They don't make enough of those.
