I just watched it again recently since I last saw it many years ago. I have to say that this might be one of the worst ways to do a sequel to a story that already was supposed to be finished. I hated the Sephiroth clones and their designs, Barrett's fish net and oil ideas seem to contradict the characters motives, everybody gets sidelined for Cloud who ends up finishing most of the fights. Tifa gets one fight to herself and gets ko'd to a K-mart Sephiroth fanboy and everybody else just watches from the sidelines to say "Wow, you go Cloud, it's not like we could do anything of use" Worse of all is Sephiroth's lines at the end "I'll never leave your memories" just screams sequel bait for a story that doesn't need to to be told further.

There are way more problems I have with it like the crazy fight scenes and jarring dialogue but I want to know your thoughts.

Great fanfiction, terrible sequel.

The only thing worse than AC in the compilation is Dirge of Cerberus to me.

Advent Children Complete is a fun action movie.

Safe and Sound is a banger as well.

It's pure, dumb fanservice. At the time it was pretty much the only new canon content the fandom had and we ate it up. Never seen Advent Children Complete, but I'm not sure I can watch it at this point. And hey, at least it's not as bad as Dirge of Cerberus.

Still bugs me that they used multiple tracks from Piano Collections: Final Fantasy VII for AC's OST. Just seemed lazy of them, regardless of how well at least one of those tracks worked in the movie, but I guess the same could be said of AC's plotting :P

I watched it 10 years ago without any final fantasy 7 knowledge and I don't remember anything about it anymore.

It was a fun little film when it released; cool seeing FF7 characters animated/voice cast. A lot of good fan-wank. Great OST.

Pretty worthless if you don't care about FF7 though, in my opinion.

The Complete Version (director's cut) is objectively better than the original.

I love it only because of the nostalgia, i was in middle school when the 2003 trailer dropped. i remember the wait, the trailers and the Japanese magazines and all the theories and shit.

There's really little I enjoy in that movie, starting with the designs, the tone, the mood and personalities of the characters and the incredibly bland colour palette and overall aesthetic. The plot I really dislike as well (I guess there are some very cool concepts there) and it felt really untrue for all those reasons to the original to me. Then there's the whole exaggerated acting, but that's par for the course.

I guess the fights are fun to watch and it was visually impressive back then for sure.

I really hate it. It doesn't feel anything like what FF7 was.

Cloud's costume is really dumb looking too.

I genuinely thought it was hot trash. Pretty much all compilation stuff is better left forgotten. Even Crisis Core, which for some reason gets praise? But I thought was genuinely redundant garbo, haha.

I rewatched Advent Children after playing through FF7 in Japanese two years ago, having read some of the supplemental material as well to buff up my understanding of expanded universe and... yeah, I would have been better off not spending time on that.

Midgar, With Love
I have never enjoyed it. Even the action is just gibberish to me apart from the well-choreographed Tifa fight.

It was ok as an "what if" type of story. Hated it as an actual sequel.

It does have the best version of one winged angel.

My only hope is that Square eventually makes Advent Children non-canon.
I mean, it ultimately doesn't make a difference, does it? Like, I hate about everything of the entire Compilation, but my attitude towards the original game isn't tainted by any means (the Compilation feels so different and is so detached that I just don't see those games or movies as cohesive prequels/sequels/spin-offs of VII). As in, this is the same people that came up with the whole FF VII-FF X connection in a not too ironic way.

Fwiw, FF VII-Remake is its own thing and the Compilation isn't canon there. They're probably going to eventually tackle on Compilation-only stuff (maybe even making a playable version of a revamped AC), but as it stands, the remake is its own thing.

Fanservice trash. I truly think it was made to cater to those who just wanted to see more Cloud and Sephiroth fight scenes. It's like, "Hey, you like Sephiroth? He's back, but also, we are giving you three MINI-Sephiroths! They have silver hair and are dressed in black leather, KEWL, huh? Cloud's all angsty and brooding, because that's KEWL! And look, Sephiroth now has one GIANT black wing, because... ONE-WINGED ANGEL! Get it? That was the name of the song, and the only reference of him having 'one-wing", but we are making it canon and, from now on, he's going to appear in a lotta SHIT with one SINGLE wing, because..... KEEWWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLL!"

God, I hated the FF Compilation and hated what AC did to FFVII.

All the pre release discussion on Gamefaqs was more exciting than the movie tbh. I remember those who is the "wcm" threads.

Horrible through and through. I understand it's all designed as fan service but I'm not sure what kind of fan wanted... that.

the story is terrible but lots of fun action sequences, the Tifa fight being the best one.

I'm still laughing at them having Barret get into the oil business after he'd just fought to save the world from Shinra leeching the planets life force.

I enjoyed seeing the characters and all, but I don't feel like it was necessary.

I loved it when it came out. Terrible story but some wonderful fights. The Cloud/Sephiroth fight was my go-to scene for testing out AV setups for a long time.

I haven't watched it in its entirety in a decade though. Made a few attempts and ended up just skipping to the fights.

I'm much more fond of Last Order these days. I prefer Brotherhood to Kingsglaive too—the anime style fits these games really well.
