I've just started dipping my toes into Reddit after finally finding some subreddits that resonate with me. It seems like a very deep pool. I'm still wrapping my head around it all, and a lot of the subs just seem like echo chambers or reposts from the larger internet. Sometimes I wonder why I'm bothering, beyond boredom. Maybe it's just the subs I'm subscribed to, but it seems really hard to find new communities without direct recommendations.

What do you think? What do you use Reddit for? How can I optimize my experience?

I made an account, made a few posts, got bored with it, and haven't touched it in months. There's some interesting stuff on Reddit, but it doesn't appeal to me all that much.

I enjoyed reading the threads on supernatural occurrences and strange historical events and that's like it. 🤕

It sucks for general discourse, but it can be great for niche things or help on certain topics you wouldn’t find else where.

Some subreddits are great. I stick to those and thus my experience is solid. I like Reddit.

Also, death to new reddit. old.reddit.com is the only way

Amazing when you need advice on something specific. Like "What is a good X to buy" type stuff.

I like it, seems like every topic/interest has a sub board where you can talk about stuff you like, unlike on general forums where you might not find others that like ‘x’

I love it. Reminds me of forums in the past. The more specific topics the better imo.

Follow some music subreddits and it's great for discovery.

cool for niche communities or hobbies. Everything else is hot garbage. I checked out my cities sub once and it was a bunch of people complaining about black lives matter flags being put up.

Reddit is great! Get news from the street super quick and there's a sub for everything.

Find subreddits that are relevant to your hobbies and not hotbeds for toxic behavior, and you're good to go! I just started using reddit in the past year thanks to renewed interest in playing guitar and board games. Oh, and cute animals.

It's extremely rare that I've been on Reddit, and the only times I've ever been there have been from google search links. If there's something of use, cool, but I'm not lingering.

Edit: I voted indifferent. It could disappear tomorrow and I would not give one fuck.

r/all is Facebook-tier at this point but it's still worth putting in the effort to curate a list of subs that align with your interests.

It's somewhere between good and all right in some places and an absolute godawful nightmare in others, so I think it averages out to "fine, I guess."

Its format prioritize memery and fresh content over thoughtful discussion. Mostly inferior to the web 1.0 message boards it displaced, but the memes can be funny.

Positive: you can find communities for most things.

But it is a race for 1st, hot takes, try to out wit others. The layout discourages users to read more than few popular comments.

Was useful for getting info on gacha games. I don't see how anyone could have a discussion on the platform. Mostly feels like people desperately attempting memes and showing off artwork.

I hate the format with a passion, but it's a place where conversations can happen on topics not suited for many other boards either due to culture or the fact that things get overlooked in niches.

If I want to talk to people about emulation and fan games, I can go there. Outside of very specific OTs or whenever something big like the Mario 64 PC port come up, that's not something that has fostered here.

I use it mostly for browsing reviews or opinions on devices/items/etc.

I love, love, love personal finance subreddit.

Also, the format/layout of the website is terrible.

Amazing for porn

Pretty great for getting questions answered

Can be good or bad for news depending on the subreddit

Awful, awful for discussion

Meh to bad for pretty much everything else

There are definitely a lot of problems with reddit but lately I've been reading some mental health subs and it has been really positive for me

It’s good for diving into a fanbase / following of a new interest. Like say you just got into making pizza, you can find a ton of inspiration and ideas on that subreddit.

There’s also an endless amount of horrific garbage and pure trash on there. And the comment sections are even worse. I think Reddit takes are even worse than Twitter takes.

I like it a lot. Great for following sports (Australian Rules in particular), hobbies, specific advice, semi-local news, etc.

I used to read r/malefashionadvice, but I've lost interest in it now because most of the advice is very boring and safe.
I like r/watches for the photos.
r/curlyhair and r/SkincareAddiction for making myself look gorgeous.
And r/Coffee interests me too.

I sometimes join a sub for a particular game I'm playing, but never touch the big video games subs, or any of the really big subs where the stinkiest, most misanthrophic dorks hang out. I don't go near politics subs either. I'm sure there are some good ones, but I have no desire to look for them.

I hardly ever post and never make threads. I just use it as an information resource. It's excellent for a lot of niche stuff.

Love it!

It's the main way I've been able to keep up with Gaki No Tsukai videos when they get subbed and there's a lot of fun subreddits to enjoy.

It houses some of the most toxic communities on the mainstream internet, but it has such an overwhelming number of communities both good and bad that it averages out to “indifferent” for me.

It’s been years since I’ve gone to any subreddits on a daily basis as part of my regular routine, but subreddits are very much part of my usual “trying to find information/answers/recommendations on a subject” search path

Its terrible if you want to engage in the discussion, but for lurking and discovering all the weird/interesting shit on the internet I love it.

It is absolutely up to the Reddit’s you join. You can find super niche communities, that have some of the most progressive and nicest people you’ll ever meet. On the other hand Reddit’s like r/sino should be trebucheted into the sun

I check it out every now and again, but everyone else I know goes there just as much as I do here.

I hear all the complaints about layout/usability. It's not very user friendly. It used to be horrible and once they changed format/usability I finally checked it out but it's as though they still haven't nailed it. It still feels wonky, as a user.

Also, I... Did not know that it could be used for pornography... Maybe it's time to move on from tumblr...

Its format prioritize memery and fresh content over thoughtful discussion. Mostly inferior to the web 1.0 message boards it displaced, but the memes can be funny.
I hear that. I sometimes think the up/down voting is what makes it into an echo chamber.

Its a dumpster fire in layout and community.

Some decent little subreddits here and there though.

I don't use it with any regularity. I did like a decade ago. I think broadly, the lack of moderation around some pretty blatantly vile communities has been fucking terrible, and frankly too little too late in some cases. Like they helped normalize a lot of fucking shit.

On a less critical level, it's occasionally helpful when looking to see why a certain thing is broken or investigating a particular hobby or whatever. Getting back into Apex recently, I've checked in and enjoyed afew of the memes and discourse that's caught me up on how the game has changed in the past year and a half.
