Spin off from the mixed French girl being harassed post.

An Italian poster asserted that white culture was a legit non racist concept of "white heritage" but never explained exactly what it is for some reason so I'm asking

Are people with one white parent and a parent of color excluded from white culture?

Does whiteness supercede ethnic and nationality to create an encompassing white culture?

Is scientific progress made by white people exclusively white culture?

Do white Palestinian dudes covet Elvis because he's white?

Is Alexandre Dumas a white figure even though though his grandmother was African or is that why he isn't a white hero?

Do Mormans feel a kindredship with Jewish because of white skin? And it's not rooted in a sense of superiority?

Maybe there is an overarching white culture that isn't based on a sense of superiority, but what form does this really take?

What exactly is white heritage & white culture?

Western European culture? It's a broad slice of different countries but collectively that's what I think of when I think of 'white culture'.

It's as pointless a statement as Black culture, Asian culture, Middle Eastern culture. Aboriginal culture, etc. An umbrella too wide to ready do anything practical or accurate with. Each human faction has their own history and culture. But the definition of Western civilization is so markedly biased and ephemeral, it's pretty much an intellectual fallacy.

Guess it depends on how broadly you define things? Most the kids in my generation of my family are mixed. When we consider the "white" lineage is local to where my dad's family came from here and the culture associated with that region of the country. We don't really consider it w/e it was over 500 years ago on another continent.

However we aren't all mixed with the same special sauce. Have half black cousins, and half middle eastern cousins who view the non-white parts of their culture with entirely different lenses.

I think just saying "white culture" is way too broad. Would be like saying asian culture and making an assumption when what I was referring to was India or the Phillipines.

White AMERICAN culture is taking things from other cultures and passing it off as your own. Can't speak about any others tho.

All sorts.

But a good starting point might be the Renaissance, classical liberalism, rule of law and separation of church and state.

And Vanilla Ice.

The term "White Culture" makes no sense outside of the colonies where they mashed everything together. Most of these terms makes no sense outside of particular environments.

I hate this question, because it assumes all "white" is the same, and when a shared culture can't be found, it is mocked as pathetic and steals everything. It's not an honest question, even if restricted to white America.

White comes from many different backgrounds, all of which have unique cultures.

A useless racialist attempt to take the hodgepodge of European cultures and tie them to race.

This.

French people are "white" but do not have white culture. They have French culture.

German people are "white" but they do not have white culture. They have German culture.

White Culture, as defined by the white people who invented it, is defined by two things: White skin, and power over minorities.

Seems to vary by poster and country. There's probably not any singular "white culture" because the various people who are/can be considered "white" have never been cut off from the individual origins and cultures they have.

So you think whites do not have culture? Really?

Is that really how you interpret the OP

White culture is a fiction invented by racists so they can better discriminate against people they regard as inferior

Outside of USA, Canada, and Australia, what is White Culture? A Chechen does not have the same culture as a person from France, and neither share a similar culture as an Irish person. Hell even in Canada, the Quebecois have a distinct culture than the English Canadians. As I said, once you go back to the ethnic roots of the various groups who immigrated to these new lands, these monolithic terms become stupid as hell.

USA
It all depends. There is a generic white culture in the 'States. It's vaguely Christian, revolves around the cliche American traditions, etc. But there are still ethnic and regional groups. One of my best friends is from a large Italian family, and Italian Americans are very American but also very different from everyone else (if you've watched The Sopranos you get the idea - they really are a lot like that). Puerto Rican friends and family have their own uniquely American version of their culture, same for friends of Irish descent from the Northeast, or friends that hail from the Shenandoah area, etc.

It's really no different than predominantly white nations around the world. Think about the UK. You can travel across the whole island spending time in numerous cities in a week, and while everyone you meet have that shared UK culture, they also have their own little pockets of culture unique to either ethnicity, region, or both. Am I using "ethnicity" correctly?

i mean... white culture, black culture, it's way too large to really talk about something specific, reducing it to that is not really smart

black culture in america is really different than black culture in france for exemple, or asian culture in japan will be different than asian culture in china

Also culture comes mainly from the country, not from your ethnicity IMO...

For exemple if you're a latino guy that were adopted and raised in japan, your culture will mostly be japanese culture, not something else defined by your ethnic origin

Plenty of European/North American people's have cultures and ethnicities, but whiteness is an ideology. There is no "white culture" -- and anyone trying to argue there is one has a darker agenda, IMO.

White culture varies depending on a combination of regional and religious background. A white dude in Alaska is likely living a completely different lifestyle than a white dude in NYC, much less compared to other countries.

So basically there is no singular white culture. I'd also argue saying stuff like black culture and asian culture simply those too much, but people generally know what is being referred to when people use those terms.

There is not "white culture". There is French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, etc. cultures, but they're not similar and have traditionally opposed one another.

People pushing "White culture" and "White heritage" are pushing some form of pan-Europeanism which makes little sense. "Black culture" emerged in the Western Hemisphere because African slaves were stripped of their culture and heritage and forced to create a new one. Europeans never experienced that, so any time "White culture/heritage" is brought up, people are (rightfully) suspicious.

White culture began around slavery, when white people redefined what Race was to hold power over entire groups of people.

This also allowed them to fold and include more groups under the banner of "white" to maintain that power.

See: Irish, Italian and a lot of Hispanic people now being considered white.

What is 'white culture'? Please explain it to me.

Broadly you can say Western-European but even then... it's too vast and wide of an umbrella. There isn't one identifiable 'white culture'.
The definition of culture is...
1.
the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.

So what are we here trying to parse? It surrounds us. It's in museums. You're watching it in theaters. In a broad sense everything. We do not need to label it "white" and the only reason I think anyone would try and put a label on it is to discredit it.

there is no such thing as White Culture or White Heritage.

European countries are so old that their definitions of culture and heritage are specifically tied to their respective cities, regions and countries.

Even within tiny European countries, you even have regional cultural pride.

"White culture" only really exists as a very hollow reactionary term to the idea of black culture. Black culture took hold as a concept among the African American population as a substitute to the fact that their ancestors brought over as slaves had their very heritage and identity forcibly stripped from them, leaving the US black population without the luxury of pinpointing their heritage to more specific cultures, unlike the white immigrants who were free to preserve their own history of the countries they came from.

"White Culture" is a label that specifically calls to Racism and White Supremacy. It's the only context I've ever seen that phrase used.

Black Culture has been referenced out of customs, art, and activity that Black Americans have created in their community.

Every other nations culture is referenced by name. "German culture" "British Culture" etc.

That's what makes White Culture a dogwhistle for bullshit

It doesn't make sense outside of the US, even hardcore right wing party in Europe will speak about Judeo-Christian culture before "white" culture.

It only make sense in the US where everything is defined by races and where they appropriate european cultural heritage they have no right to.

Oh c'mon, Cream. America has a lot of different inventions, foods, and events under its belt. It's not all tragedy. There is definitely something to be proud about.
