I've always been a big fan of fiction set within the trappings of feudal Japan across its numerous historical periods. The architectural and natural backdrops of that time lend themselves so well to visual media like movies and games, the political and economical upheavals that seemed to occur every few generations make for captivating stories, and of course the archetypal warriors of the era (samurai and ninja) allow for endlessly cool conflicts. Long story short, feudal Japan is just awesome.

I'm always looking to discover some quality new samurai/ninja fiction, regardless of the medium. That's why I'm making this thread. Hopefully I won't be the only person to stumble upon a new favorite book, film, or game via this thread.

I'll start us off with what I consider to be my personal favorite work of samurai fiction.

Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal (1999)

While technically a four-part OVA (original video animation), it runs together as a two hour-long film. This right here is what got me into anime all those years ago as a teenager, and on repeat viewings as a more discerning adult I can confirm that it still holds up very well. In fact, I still think it's among the best anime ever made. I'm noticing little touches and details now that went over my head when I was younger and seeing it for the first time.

I love it because it's a rare treat in anime: a grounded Samurai tale devoid of mystic/mythological elements. It also helps that it sports some of the best art/animation that I've seen within the genre, and its positioning as an origin story to the excellent (but very different) Rurouni Kenshin anime series lends its story even more weight.

Trust and Betrayal tells a captivating story with beautiful art and real emotion, and I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone who has yet to see it.

Honorable Mentions:
  • The Seven Samurai (1954 film)
  • 13 Assassins (2010 film)

Well, that was going to be my first pick, so I'll go with
Samurai Champloo
I loved the aesthetic and the combination of hip hop with Japanese period fiction. It was an incredibly unique experience that somehow worked out REALLY well

Harakiri (not the remake) is easily my favorite. The story is incredible and the ending is masterful.

Lone Wolf & Cub (Manga version).

28 volumes, not a single pages wasted, made in 1970s, and it's a freaking masterpiece.

Should be obvious from my avatar but Masaki Kobayashi's Harakiri is a masterful work of art and probably my favorite samurai film of all time, if not one of my favorite films ever.

The camera work during the penultimate fight of the movie utilizes some of the most striking use of framing, landscape, and lighting in filmmaking I've ever seen.

Twilight Samurai. It's a masterpiece.

Or on the other end of the Samurai spectrum.

13 Assassins! Probably one of the best action scenes put to film.

Honestly at this point I'd say Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. It's got some pacing & editing issues, but telling the story from the perspective of two bumbling refugees lightens the tone considerably, preventing a story with a very serious premise from becoming too mawkishly grimdark.

I came into this thread just to steal your ideas and add them to my backlog...

Seven Samurai is my pick but it's already being mentioned countless times.

Blade of the Immortal was something I was into for a while. Never heard of Trust and Betrayal, as I'm not a big anime fan but that looks dope. Can I stream it somewhere?

It is a mesmerizing, emotionally gut-wrenching film that I wish I had the pleasure to watch for the first time again. If you can, please find a way to enjoy this film at the highest image quality available. Anything less would be a disservice.

Book/Audiobook : Shogunby James Clavell. It'll make you scream, it'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry.

Basically people who die without ever reading it have wasted their lives.

It's so awesome there was a mini-series adaptation made in 1980

Ah, forgot one.

Azumi (manga version), haven't seen the live-action yet.

I would put this at least as near great as Lone Wolf & Cub.

I wish it was easier to collect these. It's something I really want to read one day but haven't because of its price tag.
