Obviously there is a difference between perfect and favorite, but for the purpose of this thread, I have five perfect movies:

Rocky
Back to the Future
Empire Strikes Back
Godfather 1
Godfather 2

Sure, I have a lot more favorite movies but by "perfect", I was thinking of the ones that feel perfectly cohesive and complete, where adding or subtracting anything would disrupt the film, where every element felt exactly how and where it needed to be

That's kind of why I didn't say Aliens. Because I prefer the Special Edition cut over the Theatrical one

There's a few that I would pick as perfect. They aren't my favorites (though I do love some of them), but sometimes I walk out of a movie going "God damn that executed exactly what it was attempting flawlessly."

  • Back to the Future
  • Casino Royale
  • Perfect Blue
  • The Handmaiden (Ahgassi)
  • No Country For Old Men
  • There Will Be Blood
  • The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Theres a bunch of others that people here have mentioned that I won't parrot.

It's really hard to narrow it down to one, but if there's one that I feel absolutely doesn't miss a single note, it would be Road to Perdition.

- cinematography (particularly given it is Conrad Hall's final work)
- direction
- acting
- score
- editing

Hot Fuzz
Once Upon a Time in the West
2001: A Space Odyssey
John Carpenter's The Thing
Alien
Fargo

Probably missing a few. Then there are a ton that are just on the cusp of it.

That's a criminally underappreciated film.

I remember seeing it in the theater and noting that many people in the audience clearly weren't happy seeing Tom Hanks as a cold-blooded killer.

The first Mission: Impossible is mine. I've seen it tons of times and I'm still thrilled and entertained by it.

I think the original Star Wars has one of the most perfect scripts of any movie ever, but I think it suffers a bit in execution in a few places.

Yeah that seems to have been a common complaint, that Hanks was "mis-cast." But if you actually judge his performance on its own merits - which seems to be kind of tough for some given how prevalent he is - he does an outstanding job.

But the entire cast - particularly the main son - is absolutely wonderful.

The irony about people claiming he was miscast is that I don't think many other actors could have pulled it off. The whole point of the character - which the son basically reinforces at the end of the film - is that he was both a genuinely decent family man and a murderous mob enforcer. He was somebody who felt he had no choice in how he provided for his family but he was clearly weighted down by those decisions.

We had to like the character to some capacity otherwise it would have devolved into a story about a bad man killing other bad men.

I honestly can't imagine anyone else in the role.

And that moment when he guns down Newman's character...like a son killing his own father.

Anyways, good choice. :)

The Lord of the Rings trilogy immediately came to my mind as well. Nothing's perfect but they realized their goals really well I think. Some others:

Princess Bride
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Violence Jack

Back to the Future: the writing is brilliant with it's set-up for jokes and events, there's also the Alan Silverstri theme

The original off Course. I watched it more thzn 10 times and i could watch it 10 times more.

Everything is perfect in this movie; music, sets, figting scènes, the actors are all amazing and the story is really great. If you havemt seen this movie, do it asap.

The original, not the stupid american remake

Jaws is a perfect movie. I can rewatch it endlessly and still marvel at its perfectly balanced construction, and all the emotional beats still land exactly as they should.

Jurassic Park, obviously. Even from a feminism perspective, the movie has aged great. Score, casting, special effects, script, memorable moments. Everything is perfect. One of the reasons I don't enjoy blockbuster movies any more is because I grew up with the best one ever. Also, it has a lot of personal significance to me.

Oh, did I mention it has huge, scary and fascinating fucking dinosaurs?

Mad Max: Fury Road

I had that thought after first seeing it in theaters. This is a perfect action movie. Maybe a perfect movie, full stop. Especially as a big screen theater experience.

I watched In Bruges for the first time yesterday so another vote for that. It's so tight that pretty much every last moment matters, seemingly throw away scenes/lines take on more significance later. There's barely any fat to cut.

The main characters are fully fleshed out with some great acting, the themes are always bubbling away, it looks great and it's fucking funny.

There may be better films but not many others where I don't think it's worth changing a single thing.
