It feels like half of the people are disappointed with a sequel to an EA game and the other half didn't understand the question.

Personally, I can't really reply to this. I either wasn't disappointed or didn't play the sequels to the games that might apply.

I was really disappointed with Uncharted 4. It made me feel that Naughty Dog was trying really hard to direct a movie and so the game-related elements were a second thought, built mostly to accomodate character interaction and drive the story forward.

In my mind, Uncharted Lost Legacy is the *true* Uncharted 4.

Mass effect andromeda. it was a decent game. fun. had the best gameplay of the series. but ultimatly the story, characters and lack of many new races was bad.
Farcry 5 - didnt even play it yet, looks disappointing and USA is such a boring setting for Farcry, also ubisoft decided it was a great idea to spoil the ending for everyone
Killzone Shadowfall - another good game. but the previous 2 were better and darker. i would have expected it to be a defining game of the generation like the previous 2 were for me last gen. this one was just good.

Mass Effect Andromeda killed the series. I didn't like the very ending of 3, but I enjoyed journey there. Andromeda was just bad.

Probably Halo 5, Gears 4 or Mass Effect Andromeda. That said, I loved Gears 5, so for me the franchise is back on track.

For me it's Nier Automata. It's a great game mechanically and even thematically/storywise. I'm just bummed it felt more like Drakengard and less like Nier when it came to developing bonds with the characters.
Like Nier felt like an intimate buddy adventure with a sense of trials, triumphs, and bittersweetness. Though I felt a little of that from Pascal, I don't feel like anything reaches the heights of Emil, King, Weiss, Kaine or even the Sisters.
Also liked OG Nier's music just a bit more.

Uncharted 4 to a degree. But it's still a bloody great game.
MGSV to a greater degree. It has solid mechanics but it's a mess outside of that. I finished every other mainline MGS multiple times. V not even once.

I don't think I am more disappointed with a sequel to a franchise (that i dearly loved) as I am with Uncharted 4. It still stings! I feel that ND's success with story telling in TLOU, and unjustified criticism that Drake is a maniacal killer, led them down a path where they sacrificed continued action (which the series was known and loved for) and good pacing for telling a story no one wanted.

Instead what we got was endless conversation annexed to endless walking and climbing, set pieces that soon end as soon as they get going and periods where there is no action at all. Worst yet, the ending. You're given one battle, then its nothing but climbing and walking for 20 minutes then a crappy sword battle. Urghh.

That was not the next gen Uncharted I expected or wanted!

What is yours?

It's Uncharted 4 for me as well. Uncharted 1-3 were fun games - they felt like summer action movies where you just go in and have a good time. Uncharted 4 was not fun. It was a slog, poorly paced, and like you say tried to tell a deep and compelling story but just wound up being boring. I'm told Uncharted: Lost Legacy is fun and goes back to the series' roots more. I'm inclined to believe that but still haven't gathered the motivation to start it, due to how much I disliked Uncharted 4.

It took me a week or two each to beat Uncharted 1-3. It took me a year and a half to beat Uncharted 4. The lesson I learnt is make sure there are quite a few (at least 5) games you really really wan to play on a system, because even something that looks like a sure thing can wind up being disappointing.

Metal Gear Solid 4. Between the lame story, lack of gameplay & shitty framerate. There is very little nice I can say about this awful sequel.

Saints Row The Third. The game has grown on me over the years but when I first played it I thought it was awful. The bland city & activities being turned into missions really frustrated me.

Honorable Mention: Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus. I really liked the story & characters but felt that the gameplay was a massive downgrade.

This for me too...
couldn't even finish it. It felt unpolished and I don't just mean the missing chapter:
  • The repetitive missions
  • Lack of captivating villain team/squad (MGS had Foxhound, MGS 2 had Dead Cell, MGS3 had Cobra Unit, MGS4 had B&B Unit, even PW had the Metal Gear variants and Rising had the cyborg bosses)
  • An out of nowhere antagonist
  • Lack of Hayter
  • Bipedal MG design that seemed more advanced than MGS which seemed odd
  • Microtransation FOB mess
  • Offline base invasion
  • Barely speaking protag
I guess those are small issues to some, but they hurt the experience for me.
Amen.

Lets see.

Far Cry 5 is fresh in my mind cause I made a thread on it recently, so that: https://www.resetera.com/threads/far-cry-5-is-big-step-back-for-the-series-spoilers.156464/

Uncharted 4. I didn't have a PS3 back in the day, so didn't really experience UC 1-3 when they came out. But when I played through Nathan Drake collection and 4 in order last year, I found Uncharted 4 to be quite disappointing. Barely any shooting sections (better shooting mechanics, but whats the point when I can barely use them), and only that one major setpeice. Way too much walking, climbing and slow sections, they tried to put too much emphasis on story when all Uncharted is supposed to be is a light hearted indiana jones adventure.

Need for Speed 2015 and Need for Speed Payback. It's funny, because the deficiencies of each game are unique to each other.
2015 had a horrible handling model, was always online, egregious rubber-banding, not being able to pause, no manual (at the time of release) and being always night all the time, and just being a short game with not that much longevity in general.
Payback had the casino microtransaction based performance upgrade system, a cringe unbearable story and protagonist, cars split into arbitrary car classes, cops that were a total afterthought, and a bare bones online that didn't even have free roam at launch.

The Crew 2. The Crew's defining element is that map of the US, and they screwed it up here by removing so many interesting landmarks and locations. That's all I have to say.

Man, too many to count actually. Off the top of my head:

Mass Effect Andromeda
Street Fighter V
MGS V
Dragon Age Inquisition
And ofc this:
Persona 5.

After the amazing P3 and an improved gameplay sequel, Persona 5 came. And oh boy, what a letdown it was. Only memorable characters are Futaba, Makoto and Joker. Dungeons, despite not being random generated, are long and boring as hell. Storywise, it isn't that interesting; party members development continues being locked behind social links. Some twists were predictable. And really hated how Morgana had too much control of your life. And don't get me started with Atlus homophobia.

At least the soundtrack is great. And it is quite stylish.

I completely agree. Hopefully they do better with 6.

I hardly expected anything from BioWare after how royally they messed up Mass Effect 3, and while Andromeda was a technical shitshow I don't feel the writing is actually worse than in ME3, but only unlike that game it didn't have a solid premise to piggyback off of and so the foundation it sorely needed was messed up by the kind of post-BioWare-BIoWare writing that began especially with ME3 (wasted dialogue, awkward storytelling and loooots of empty words that are written to sound important and nothing else).

Dragon Age 2 sucked and in many ways DA:I does too but I'm split on it between being a great game and a boring and shallow game. The customization is great and it has a few key moments that I still think hold up to a lot of other current-gen games (like the battle for Haven).

So I can't in good faith say BioWare disappointed me this generation. Of course, both DA:I and MEA should've been the ultimate comebacks for both franchises that had started to seriously decline in quality, but honestly I'm okay about minor improvements which I feel they are in spirit. They do address a lot of criticisms from their former games earnestly despite being incompetently made.

The big mystery for me though was Arkham Knight. can't deny how Next-Gen it felt but god damn, what a watered down sequel when it comes to the things Rocksteady used to do good. Pretty much their legacy in the previous two games was about their ability to create well-crafted level set pieces with fun bosses and great variety. In this game everything is so god damn rinse and repeat. There's longwinded cutscenes everywhere that try to seeeeamlessly blend in from the gameplay but it's really obvious, and you have to constantly do generic shooter-segments in the tankmobile, and there are no bosses, and the story is ambitious but under-executed... What happened? Arkham City had a pacing and a fire about it. When it peaked it was glorious. This game is low-energy, slow-paced, it's somber and not very fun in its spirit. It's a depressed Batman game and I hated it. The biggest evidence at its decline is how much more creativity that was pulled into Arkham Origins and its bosses which is not even made by the same company.

Arkham Knight is easily the worst sequel I didn't expect at all to suddenly be so bad.

This whole generation has been disappointing sequels to be honest. I think Forza Horizon 4 might be the only game I can point to and say it's better than last generations Forza, but considering it's the third one this gen and only one on last gen I don't think that necessarily counts. Actually Witcher 3 as well. Those might be the two.

As for my list of the most disappointing:

Battlefield V
Dragon Age Inquisition
Mass Effect Andromeda
Halo 5 (though 4 was bad as well)

Andromeda didn't grab me, and I'm sad about that. Breakpoint being a mess after i had so much fun with wildlands was also a major loss. But Metal gear solid being as good as it was and knowing in the back of my head that it wasn't aloud to be what it should have been is the biggest punch in the gut for me of any generation.

I agree with Uncharted 4. The pacing was lethargic and there where virtually no impressive set pieces apart from the clocktower. Thankfully, The Lost Legacy corrected almost all of my issues. While it did feel a bit formulaic, it at least pulled from all the great ideas that made me love the franchise.

Infamous was pretty forgettable as well.

Also disappointing: the fact that, while brilliant, the only Ratchet & Clank we got was a reimagining.

Overall, AAA has really disappointed me this gen. Outside of Horizon there hasn't been much promise. Almost everything takes way longer to develop and the promising new franchises that I enjoyed (The Order, Recore) failed to find commercial success.

FFXV has some things I like about it, but everything involving its main story is a disgrace. It's impossible for me to play it without thinking about how badly prioritized the game was

Does Wolfenstein count? Because The New Colossus was awful, meanwhile The New Order is masterful.

Mass Effect Andromeda easily. ME was my favorite new franchise of last gen and I was super hyped for the next gen version so I was supremely let down.

i wouldn't go far as to say TNO was "masterful". most of its goodwill was on being a no-frills singleplayer FPS campaign, which was a big deal back then. and it happened not to suck

but yeah TNO to TNC certainly counts. sad thing is TNC isn't a particularly "bad game" per se, it just all around... kinda sucks

Ended up having even that twist spoiled for me before the game even came out
when the achievements leaked and 'Nuclear Family' was among them, complete with a cheevo icon of the protag character standing over 'Father's deathbed

I thoroughly enjoyed ME:Andromeda, Fallout 4 and Uncharted 4. I just finished up playing New Vegas again and can't for the life of me understand why people feel like F04 is somehow less of a RPG. The series has been basically an action-rpg since F03. And I still haven't heard a decent reason why ME: Andromeda is bad. Most say characters and story. First, you can't compare the character development because the first series had three games to develop the characters, while the folks in Andromeda are brand new. Same goes for the story. Mass Effect didn't really become a hit till the darker sequel came out. Andromeda had a lot of potential and it died because people decided to they were going to hate no matter what. Additionally, the whole "colonizing" planets angle added a whole new dimension to gameplay that was just begging for some new and awesome DLC's. "But the face animation".

you wanted an uncharted where nate faught ANOTHER supernatural ancient evil that only appears via deus ex machina at the last minute followed by him totally not growing and progressing character wise at the ending with him exactly the same person as he is in the beginning?

Man...i never expected that people actually yearned for George Lucas style of cookie cutter character development and story telling but to each his own i guess,

fallout 4 is the first one where "kill dudes" is the only solution

but the "it's not an rpg" thing is hyperbole. sure it's more Far Cry than Baldur's Gate but by most metrics it's an RPG. if Horizon: Zero Dawn can get hailed as a incredible arpg then yeah FO4 veers easily toward the 'rpg' spectrum

Yeah, Uncharted 4 for sure. The awful pacing and underwhelming setpieces kills my desire to revisit that campaign.

They never sold me on Sam either. Not only is his very existence hard to swallow, but his personality is super grating and painfully unfunny. And since that character was essentially the centerpiece of the entire journey, it was a real drag for me.

Mass Effect Andromeda is probably the biggest disappointment. The story was uninteresting, the characters were flat, and the quests were boring.

Persona 5 is a close contender though. Not even factoring in gross relationships with adults, or the homophobic stuff, the story is just bad. It is one of the tamest anti authority stories I've ever seen. The big message seems to amount to nothing more than bad things are bad.

The real heartbreaker for me though is Deus Ex. I loved Human Revolution, but Mankind Divided just let me down. All the new characters are barely fleshed out, almost none of the old characters return for any extended period of time. A lot of the plot felt like I was expected to have read some ancillary novel or comic to understand the details of what was going on, and it ended with a lame cliffhanger that will now never be resolved. The gameplay was great, but for an RPG the story was a let down.

Final Fantasy XV for me, probably. Metal Gear V was disappointing from a story perspective but I think that story already felt wrapped to me anyway, so it couldn't really hurt me. With FFXV I was hurting and thirsting for a good Final Fantasy and just felt very alienated.

Gotta be Fallout 4 for me. I loved New Vegas so much. FO4 just bored me. I thought I might be done with that type of game but I picked up Skyrim remastered and fell straight back into it.
