What's happening with DK in the Super Smash Bros. Melee intro?

Is he being hit by PK Thunder? Mewtwo's Shadow Ball? There are clear electrical properties going on but it's far too large to be PK Thunder and it's completely stationary. It also isn't clear if DK is conjuring it or whether he's being attacked by this mystical flow of energy.

It actually looks a hell of a lot like Pikachu's Final Smash introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl:

So what's actually going on in this scene, Era? It's been bugging me for years.

EDIT: I always assumed it was Ness' attack, but it does seem too big for that.

The opening video was being made in another city and was already finished before E3 2001, while the game carried on in development since at least November, so changes could have taken place.

Yup It's Mewtwo's Shadow Ball since it have purple and blue colors in it. It's just a tease for Mewtwo unlockable.
