I vote rat. They're really smart and affectionate, and don't require as much medical attention as the others. I had a college professor who had a pet rat he would sometimes let run around during lab. Little critter was cool as hell. Would even sit patiently and watch videos.

I currently have 4 Degus and OMG are they the most adorable things ever.

They are so full of personality and just love to be handled and climb all over you. Plus when they're together they make this adorable little chirping noise to communicate with each other that makes my heart melt.

The only caveat with rats that I've heard from friends who have raised them is that they can be so social they might get depressed without enough interaction. I have always been told you might want more than one rat so they always have company.

Really loved one of my roommates' pet rats though. Super chill and smart creatures.

Rats are really sweet and intelligent and make wonderful pets with the caveat that they only live to be 2-3 years old on average. They also dont do well solitary, so you need to get them a companion and it puts you in a weird position unless you want to get into a cycle of replacing them every time one dies which sounds awful to me.

Rats are awsome, I've had a few. Their only drawback is they WILL get cancer and die on you. It hurts.

Chinchilla by far. They have the longest lifespan out of all the options, are easily the best looking, enjoy being handled (mine did anyway) and have the softest fur in the animal kingdom. What's not to love?

Rat - they're very low maintenance and very smart, but sadly they don't live long and have various genetic diseases

Sadly they don't count because :
1 - They are not rodents
2 - They are not pets
But quokkas are the best

Rats are great, but they don't live very long and have tons of health problems. High rates of cancer and mental issues. One rat I had as a kid literally chewed off his own feet when he got old. It was sort of horrifying.

Guinea pigs all the way for me. So adorable, live 5-9 years on average if you take good care of them, and usually love to be pet.

either a hamster or gerbil, just be careful of having too many hamsters they can get nasty with each other

sort of off topic but stay the fuck away from ferrets. they smell, are hard to clean, steal shiny things and hide them, and generally aren't worth keeping as pets
