Like, what need is there for it? I left Yakuza 0 in the middle due, among many other reasons, to how uncomfortable it made me to see real photos of women used for erotic purposes in the game, I was trying Yakuza Like a Dragon on Game Pass, and again.

As soon as the story goes into a soapland (Like a kind of brothel) the walls are full of real photos of real women. Just ... why? It is in terrible bad taste.

Models have it rough, it's better for them to get paid than not and it's way easier to contract them make some special content for the game than having to model and animate characters in their place.

Good question, it's also glaring with real photos mixed with yakuza graphics. Weird.

Ah, the answer was $$$ again

Is your question why they have photos of women all over the place or why the women are real women?

First question: it's how it looks like in real life. It's been five years I've been to Japan but it even feels toned down in Yakuza, or maybe it just had a bigger impact on me back then because it was my first time seeing it.

Second question: why create 100s of virtual women when you can just buy their photos?

If Sega can help the porn industry by giving them some $$$, that's cool for everybody's involved. Are you against sex workers winning money, OP ?

It's a game based at least in principle around the seedy crime underbelly in Japan, which yes, includes sex workers.

And frankly, them being paid for their photos for modelling for a game like yakuza is far less harmful than what they could otherwise be expected to do for money, so it's hard for me to draw a line about saying they shouldn't do it.

Metal Gear Solid 2 did this as well. I think those sort of things fit the theme of the game here but it is a bit weird that they're real photos in a computer graphics world!

I always assumed all the billboards of the host clubs were real guys too. Probably just adds authenticity to the setting.

It is a big deal in Japan. There are major casting roles that hundreds of women gun for. They even get to tell their life story in them sometimes too, which has lead to some really pretty interesting and uplifting stories -- like the trans woman in Yakuza 3 for example.

The game's treatment of women is pretty questionable at times, but the JAV/gravure idol photos never bothered me. They even included some of them in side stories like Aika. I think that's completely fine and even fits with the game's themes.

Yeah, they're real pornstars and one of them even appears in a certain game

Game set in fictional recreations of Japanese red light districts feature porn stars... checks out to me.

But on another note, Yakuza loves to cross promote in Japan, this goes from restaurant promos, getting various celebrities and real people to appear in the games as themselves (including celebrity chefs, a Judo fighter, and a weird dude who showed up to an audition in just his underwear)
This also extends out to AV stars, originally it was mainly/only for the hostess dating side of things, but along the way they started using them for other stuff - 0 features quite a few porn stars, you'll notice (or maybe not, if you dislike the cards) that a bunch of the ones your collecting are for women that appear in the game - the hostesses yes but also the lady that helps Kiryu's real estate business (Marina I think?) is a real porn star.

And then you have Yakuza 6 which just basically drops all pretense of using the characters in other mini games and just lets you chat to actual porn stars as they undress.

Though I'd need to check to see if 7 actually has porn stars in it. Usually (as mentioned above), its for hostesses but the hostess clubs are just stat boosts in that game and feel like an afterthought, not sure they bothered to get real girls this time? The only ladies I remember being added to the game were competition winners from a talent search and those were the basically the girls (bar Saeko) that help you in side content - Eri was the winner and such she's a party member and part of the big side content (and as a bonus, amazingly overpowered and the best party member in the game, go Eri!) but also the modding shop lady, the woman that works at the class switching job center, the bar tender at your hideout and the lady at the quiz mini game reception area.

That's really interesting. I could see that Eri was meant to be a real person but I didn't realise it was from a competition.

Japanese pornstars are in all type of media. It's not some crazy taboo like it would be in the west

its a tie in / cross promotion thing. the av stars/ gravure models get paid and sega get potentially new players because porn consumers want to see their waifu in a game

its like that bts promo with mcdonlads basically

I can see that it can be weird seeing photos of real women in the game but imagine the amount of assets they need to create to fill the same role and make it feel authentic. Better to use existing photos of pornstars/gravure models and pay them for it (it's also a kind of advertisement for them), it's win-win for all involved.

Though I think most of the money will go to the agency rather than the model but at least (I hope) they should at least have a say if they want to appear in the game or not and get something from it.

Some of them even get to be an actual character in game (with their own storyline and they also get to voice their character) so I think it's kinda cool they get a chance to try something different from their usual job and may be a chance to branch off.

I mean, I find it shocking that women are directly sexualized with photographs in the game when the other characters are rendered in 3D but it must be me.

So if like say Naughty Dog asked for a picture of you for a poster in the game for like ÂŁ100...not a 3D model...but just like a photograph of you...would you say no?

It's probably quick and easy money for everyone.

And yeah, people might see the females on a poster in-game and want to see what else they do. Advertising!

I just find the concept of depictions of real people in a video game weird.

It must be bizarre for the computer people in these games to see real people, but they don't seem to care. I guess the idea is that they'd look at that like we look at CG or drawn depictions of people. But as a real person, it's weird to play a game presenting a CG world, with real people in it. Like...how does that make sense? How do you explain it? How do the characters in this world know what real people look like? Where did they get these photos from? Is Yakuza a parallel dimension to ours? You can travel between them? Who has this technology? Why are they using it to put photos of real porn stars on a wall in a video game?

They should put some kind of filter on those photos to make them look more like they belong in a CG world.
Otherwise my brain just starts dipping down that rabbit hole.

The stars get paid and they get potential new customers, Yakuza get authenticity.

Win for all involved. How is this a problem?

How do you feel about food pictures in games?

Like Yakuza does it and I know i've seen games like GTA have billboard of a real-ass burger there.

Does that also baffle people? Like imagine seeing a real-ass burger on a billboard, going into the shop...and you have a 5-Polygon Monstrosity? :D

You really shouldn't compare food with people if you want to make an argument.

It's how the real Kabukicho (what Kamurocho is based in) works, the buildings are littered with billboards of men and women hosts/escorts/what have you. The real one is even more dense and packed with ads.

These are real people who are getting paid (or maybe they pay? don't know the details) for publicity purposes. It's actually good for them.
