Seriously on gaming side all I see is people attacking eachother or trying to get one over on each other. I had made a pretty innocent post in the BFV sales thread and got a snarky reply back, I was just in the raimi spiderman suit thread and all I saw was people attacking each other and blaming eachother for the harrassment that the insomniac guys got for it. Seriously do we come to this site with a chip on our shoulders? These are not the only two threads where I’ve seen this gaming side just seems extra negative and somewhat toxic lately. I know this thread will backfire on me and maybe im just seeing things that nobody else is or i’m extra sensitive to it, but i really love this site and I think we can and should be better to eachother.

BFV and Spiderman threads are toxic? Oh, OP, you haven't seen anything yet. Wait until you visit RDR2 threads.

It bothers me too, especially when the only replies I seem to get to honest discussion are people trying to one-up me constantly. It's almost never a discussion, it's a sparring match--which likely breeds some of the problem you're describing.

It's been a thing since forever. You will always have these people being incredible negative to well received games (and everything else really). Just people trying to be edgy and get a reactions out of others.

There is no single, overarching excuse. It's the way this community is. There are many others that act similarly, but this place is responsible only for itself.

Society has cultivated us to be assholes and not have empathy, you’re seeing it spill out the pot.

The industry hasn’t checked any sort of hate either so it flourished and grew.

The gaming community is full of negativity and pessimistic gamers... like seriously they enjoy assuming the worst most of the times with unrealistic predictions and expectations.

That’s why mostly now I don’t get into discussions... because all of that can effects you in a unpleasant way.

A lot of it is because people start obsessing over who is going to win Game of the Year back in March (or even earlier) and this is the result of having almost a year to stew on it.

It's incredibly easy to be a prick over the internet. The majority of the world are naturally pricks but we mostly hide it in real life, since we don't have to online it's easy to let the facade slip. I certainly try to not be a prick most of the time but I'm not perfect and I slip up every now and then.

If you want civility, go post in a porn video comment section.

Honestly though, I agree. People get too bent out of shape about stuff. If I’m upset about something, I just make a sarcastic joke or meme about the topic. No need to insult and attack others.

Lately?

There's no one more annoyingly combative than an entitled nerd, and there is no nerd more entitled than a gamer. This has been the case for many years now. Gamers are whiny and spoiled and think the industry owes them everything they demand. They also are some of the least tolerant people of opposing views that I've ever encountered.

It's always been this way.

Critical discourse over pretty much all media has been steadily devolving thanks to the rise of youtube critics, where there's a fevered sprint to have the final verdict on a product, which often times can only exist in the extremes of it being the best or the worst thing ever because grey areas of okay-ness are pretty much completely ignored. This is exacerbated by a mentality that has long since existed where analysis is done towards a goal of "beating" a product in a critical sense rather than fostering discussion over its faults and accomplishments in a grander scale or in comparison to its peers.

Era is much better than most, but for whatever reason the scene around gaming just attracts tons of negativity. More so than movies or music, it feels like in gaming there is just about as much discussion of bad games as there is good ones. People love to sink dozens or hundreds of hours into games then say they are shit, or that the people who think it was good are stupid, I guess to highlight their superior taste or whatever.

If I can think of a reason other than “gamers are bad” it would probably be Reddit. The way the site works hot takes are always gonna get extra attention and it encourages lots of “actually, this game is so bad (my superior taste allows me to see this) and if you enjoy it then you are an idiot” kind of posting. This is why subs for multiplayer games are usually full of people complaining about the game or saying how bad it is. Reddit cannibalized a lot of forums so it’s now the home of video game discussion, so here we are.

OP if you're talking about this post

It wasnt about some incels complaining about accuracy, its about straight up fatigue, cod had a new (for cod) exciting feature this year and battlefield was just more battlefield
And this reply

Or you know could have been the bungled reveal, confusing messaging regarding customization, DICE management telling players if they don't like the direction to not buy it, the glitchy beta, the delayed release date, the amount of bugs in the vanilla release, TTK changes and TTK reversal, limited game modes, and no BR.

Or could have been that "fatigue" you are talking about. Yeah, I'm sure that's it.
You were essentially arguing people were "tired" of just more battlefield and hand waving away the incels, when there were numerous compounded issues with the quality of the game itself, on TOP of the incels being a problem.

So yes, I'm not shocked you got a snarky reply when your post was just essentially handwaving away the issues.

It's definitely been more noticeable this gen imo.

It could be because Sony ran away with the gen for the first few years but now Nintendo and to an extent MS are coming back strong.

A lot of people are looking for 'revenge' posts lol

I’m with you OP. In my opinion, video games are better than they’ve ever been, and all you ever see is the most hardcore fans of games complaining. I think a lot of people have this mindset that you have to be critical all the time to make games better, instead of just enjoying them. It’s fine to say why you don’t like a thing, but for some it’s a point of pride to never enjoy anything. It makes them feel superior that they never get fooled by the developers that make video games.

As someone who started visiting video game forums since the early 2000s, gamers have been pretty negative for the most part. I remember people saying they wouldn’t play GTA: San Andreas because the main character was black, or people wanting Assassin’s Creed to fail because Jade Raymond was involved with the game.

But I think it’s worse now because people have easier access to get online, and they see others being negative towards video games, so they feel like they have to be negative as well to fit in or something.
