Where did Zoom (video conferencing software) come from?

Zoom's been around for a while. Have pens from older conferences still. They jumped big time on marketing and contracts for this pandemic and a growing massively as a result. We were a goto house but we are slack and RingCentral now.
Nah. I've been using it for a number of years now and just bought my own subscription. For a year I'll be able to have calls with friends and family longer than 40 mins without them needing to sign up for an account. They'll just need to download the app.
That's good product, and being able to start a work call in an instant is equally great
I really liked Zoom, but we switched to WebEx.
I think WebEx is fine now, but Zoom was always really good and felt like it used less battery.

We use zoom and it often skips audio if more than seven people have audio, and even worse with video. We haven't figured out what's causing it.
We work with lots of big entitities (banks, insurances, public sector) that enforce extreme PC client security measures.
Getting them to install WebEx (Chrome Plugin + .exe) has always been a nightmare/in some cases they flat out rejected to do it. This led to us doing needless on site assistance and racked up travel expenses.
Zoom OTH runs off a portable .exe even with very strict Windows settings.
Most of our customers can run it on their native desktop, some use a VM.

Nobody really likes using Microsoft products. Skype and Teams could be amazing...but they have so many annoyances.
I'm cool with webex and zoom, Slack and hipchat too.

Yeah I never heard of it before, and then in one week all schools and work places moved to Zoom.

My company uses gmail for our company email, so we can do group meetings by Hangouts video. We had a company-wide operations Hangouts meeting (100+ people) last week, don't miss my days of WebEx at all.

We use Zoom to arrange meetings with our clients, as it is the only solution they seem to grasp. For internal meetings we use Teams.
So bizarre. Been using Skype and WebEx too, for years. City goes on lockdown and suddenly everyone is rushing to use Zoom.

We have pretty much entirely switched to Zoom at this point, though our IT also recommends Teams for integrated use (which I am not fond of).
My only minor problem at times has been their audio compression quality as opposed to video, specially when using wide area mics like tabletop boundary in noisy environment (conference rooms..., though I guess that's where they push Zoom Rooms.

Been using it for years because it is way more stable when you have intercontinental teleconference meetings. Skype really starts to falter there.
My university doesn't want to use it though because it's not GDPR compliant. I guess Teams is not bad either though.

I had to use it for a client once and I don't really get it. I work in management consulting and have never done a video call in like 5 years of doing work for clients... I'm not sure why anyone wants video chat either. We would have 10 person calls and literally only one person (if that) would turn on their camera. Seems like a waste of bandwidth for no reason. I mean can you really process a wall of 12 videos simultaneously? What do you get out of that?
I think I'd just use Teams considering it's bundled with O365 which almost every org has these days.

I've heard of Zoom before the coronavirus pandemic, because they always advertised on local radio here.

Sometimes you can have better discussions because it's not someone shouting at a faceless person.
And also in times of social distancing it's nice for socialising.
i agree with this, a handful of people use it on teams where i work. at the start of the year the CEO was like YEA! lets all do video! and like no one does.
when talking value, office 365 is a way better value. My wife just had to buy a zoom license to teach her university class without getting kicked off, She said it was like 12 or 15 bucks for the month.
My company has been using Ringcentral which is basically reskinned Zoom with more functionality. Ringcentral's customer service isn't so great. We are switching to Zoom and it works ok i guess. Zoom meetings work fine, but they are playing catch up when it comes to the VOIP features.
My company had mostly used WebEx forever, at least our specific division did. Most switched to Hangouts years ago after switching to G Suite, I'd say I'd probably prefer WebEx between the two but it's getting phased out completely on our end. Another division uses GoToMeeting as well.
On client end I've seen a little bit of the 3 above, the Skype for Business once or twice, and Zoom a handful of times. The only one that jumped out to me as being bad was Skype, Hangouts isn't my favorite and has some issues but works, Zoom worked fine the few times I've used it but it didn't jump out to me as significantly better than the others.
