Obviously there are great films, and there are films that are great because of the performances in the film. An actor like Daniel Day Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix, or even an action star like Tom Cruise or Keanu Reeves can make a film worth watching. Every once in a while though, a film assembles enough actors in one room for something truly epic. Now, this could be for something like an adaptation such as The Lord of the Rings, a classic crime saga such as The Godfather, or a piece of history such as Saving Private Ryan.

The point is that telling big stories requires more than just a few parts and a dozen extras.

Which film in looking back had a cast that made you think "Wow, how the hell did they get that many amazing actors together in one film?"

Even though it is by no stretch my favorite film, I think the movie Lincoln has a pretty awesome cast.

I mean there's plenty of films with great casts that are also really bad films that make me ask how the hell they got such a good cast for such a piece of shit.

I always thought that Wes Anderson pulled off the most ridiculous ensemble casts. I think The Grand Budapest Hotel probably takes the cake though:

Ralph Fiennes
F. Murray Abraham
Adrien Brody
Willem Dafoe
Jeff Goldblum
Harvey Keitel
Jude Law
Bill Murray
Edward Norton
Saoirse Ronan
Jason Schartzman
Tilda Swinton
Tom Wilkinson
Owen Wilson

For actual star power, it is probably End Game or something though.

First thought was LotR. Second thought was Inglourious Basterds. Third thought was the upcoming Knives Out.

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World did.

Spencer Tracy
Milton Berle
Sid Caesar
Buddy Hackett
Ethel Herman
Mickey Rooney
Phil Silvers
Jim Backus
Peter Falk

That's just the main/supporting cast, then you had all the cameo appearances.

Jerry Lewis
Buster Keaton
Don Knotts
Moe Howard
Larry Fine
Curly Joe DeRita
etc.

PNW
Dazed and Confused

They found a fairly big cast of mostly unknowns, and several of them went on to be pretty big.

You really can't beat this one. Nearly every well known comedian of the day was in this film.

Rat Race doesn't even have a bigger cast than the movie it was ripping off.

Endgame is a collection of ok to bad actors. It's comparable to Justice League there for me where it's a big for nothing cast.

The Dark Knight has bigger profile actors all around.

The Godfather
A couple Tarantino titles
Rat Race
LOTR

Etc

Sure, there may be bigger casts.... but the thing about The Departed is every.single.person is on the top of their fucking A game. I mean, it's like an all time modern greats collection of trying to one-up their peers.

10/10 film.

If you're into older Japanese films, Seven Samurai's cast is hard to beat.
