You would assume digital versions of board games but somehow people still fuck up monopoly. People just want monopoly. Why is this hard?

Because monopoly is shit regardless of the platform.

Now Gloomhaven? There's a studio trying to adapt a board game to digital the right way

Gloomhaven on Steam

Lead your band of mercenaries in the land of Gloomhaven, work with unsavoury individuals, shape the fate of the region, fight your way through horrific places and get rich or die trying in this ruthless Tactical-RPG.

This applies to sport games too, where the fan base is historically selective for a clear set of reasons.

Sports game fans buy the same broken, shitty product year after year for full price, with little to show for it but roster updates so I have no idea where you're coming from with this. At all. FIFA, Madden, NBA2K... they're all the lowest possible effort franchises out there, but sell like crazy.

I think WWE was straight up broken and NBA 2K is like straight up gambling I think. They still chart. Plus full-priced sequels which are practically just roster updates. I'd say sports game fans.

I would say anime fans too. Anime game will always chart. You know the old saying, never bet against anime.

Annual sports game fans really just want the roster update, everything else is icing on the cake
we have a winner.

i remember ea basically changing names/updating stats and simply slapping a +1 to nba/fifa/nhl for ps2/wii/psp back in the day.
i think the 2000s was when i realized, that ea shouldnt be considered a good company anymore.

Whatever genre Animal Crossing is. I've never heard anything bad about any of them and my girlfriend is almost in tears about stairs in New Horizons.

As a whole? Elder Scrolls fans. Yes there's a vocal group online who hates what has happened to the series since Morrowind, but the grand majority love these titles and they have the most active modding community.

Time stamp this. Quote me.

While I do hate what happened to tes after Morrowind, they're still legit great games and there's absolutely nothing quite like them anywhere else, so..

I'd say Sonic, since there's still demand even after several years of mostly poor games

VN - Visual Novel

Games with just story, generally with 2d portraits and backgrounds.
VNs in Japan were the indies before indies became popular, because of the low value production and being much easier to code. This made many japanese indie writers begin the career with this genre.
Yet because of the niche status many VNs had to incorporate fanservice elements to appeal to Otaku (anime) crowd and many went full on eroge (porn)

Popular examples are 999, Vitue Last Reward, House of Fata Morgana, Umineko and Higurashi. (these ones are great stories and never were eroge)

Interesting examples are Fate Stay Night and Clannad, these two IPs were launched with +18 scenes only to appeal to the niche market, and the writers neve were to keen to the idea.
So later when both had sucesfull adaptations to anime and became profitable IPs.... both were ported and relaunched many times without the +18 scenes and the devs totally ignore their story in eroge genre.
Thank you both.

If speaking about a whole genre it's definitely sports games. They can stagnate and sell millions or even get worse and sell millions.

I have no doubt that when Elder Scrolls 6 comes out people will love it as a whole save for some in here, mainly cause we are so thirsty

You're right.

And I'm one of the people who thinks the series has gone to shit after Morrowind.

It's Madden. They go backwards annually in the feature and gameplay department but now that they've completely eliminated the skill gap business is booming.

Incorrect. Clannad had no porn in it whatsoever in its original release. It was always about the story.

Sonic. Sonic is a genre. His popularity defies understanding. Garbage release after garbage release, doesn't matter. You'll still find a huge fanbase that loves everything Sonic.

I would take a new release of NCAA football that is actually worse than the last entries and still be stoked as hell.

Bethesda Game Studio's fans are extremely easy to please. Only Fallout 76 was able to turn them against Bethesda, which says more about how ungodly terrible that game was than anything else. Seriously, you can give them broken trash and they lap it up.

Parts Unknown.
WWE 2K fans have basically been gaslighted into accepting a 6/10 game as acceptable at this point.
This is the most accurate way to sum up the WWE games.

You hope for a 6/10 game and accept a 4/10. Not that I know, absolutely not.

You can't prove it, get a warrant.

I think sports games has to be the answer right? When the nba 2k gambling trailer was released, I went looking for reactions outside of the usual outrage personalities and found no one mad about it. Instead everyone in the nba2k youtube/streaming community was complaining about the look of the cards or which cards were being shown off in the trailer. Some were excited for it. Things like that. Kind of blew my mind. If you are fine with that level of exploitation, I feel sports games could get away with murder and no one would bat an eye except for those of us who are on the outside looking in.

Based purely on looking at Steam's releases, Visual Novels. It feels like at least one gets released every week, they all look almost exactly the same, and they all have very positive reviews (or even universally positive). Granted, maybe those are all actually good, but given that I'm not even all that fond of VN's that are considered to be masterpieces of the genre, I'm never going to bother finding out.

For me personally, it's turn based strategy games. The genre is pretty dead these days, but I manage to get at least some enjoyment out of most of its releases.

Anyone saying JRPG fans is just flat out wrong. If they were easy to please we wouldn't get weekly threads on how divisive Xenoblade 2 is, how terrible Final Fantasy has been since XII, how every Tokyo RPG factory hame has been bad, any game made by Compile Heart/Idea Factory, etc.

Clearly you weren't around when Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band (vs. Rock Revolution vs. whatever other devs were making) was a thing. That was almost as vicious as console wars.

lol I've been playing rhythm games since DDR 3rd Mix. I very well remember the arguments between the GH and RB kids. I bet you both fans would kill to have both games be popular again.

The hell does that even mean?

Just what I meant. Rhythm game players are easy to please because so few games are made anymore that getting a new one is like a special event. Just look at home many people are excited for Hatsune Miku Megamix for Switch.

.... Can I say Pokémon fans? Not the loud minority who complain , but everyone else.

I have no idea at this point what the Pokémon company could do to stop selling a bajillion copies of every new Pokémon game.

Yeah, another vote for sports. The 2k stuff is straight gross and people still eat it up.

Your point is confusing, because if the fans were so easy to please... wouldn't many games be made? I think they're fickle more than anything. The audience is huge for the big stuff like Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Beat Saber, etc, but that fades and then you're just left with the diehards for the more niche stuff.

There are tons of Rhythm games out there. Especially on PC.

Open World fans. Graphics + non-linear = instant hype just from trailers that showed absolutely nothing of gameplay yet.

Sports. Before the Dynasty Warriors 9 debacle I would have said Musou/DW.

You must've missed the original "DW killer" that was DW6, a game that was significantly prettier but just as polarizing, in part due to a literal "keep mashing Square" combat system. And this was back when gaming outlets had an outright bone to pick with Koei and actively slapped them around. And even then it took a bit to get to the grinding of musou spinoffs that KT does now.

And that's not even getting into Capcom's Sengoku Basara.

I agree, I wouldn't say rhythm game fans were easy to please at all.

Guitar Hero for instance died specifically because those fans weren't easy to please. If they were, Guitar Hero had just kept releasing edition after edition ad infinitum. However, fans got completely sick of the constant new games with hardly any improvements over the last one.

Then you had the endless discussions between the people playing the games for fun and the score/difficulty junkies. The fanbase for both Guitar Hero and Rock Band was vicious in that regard, straight up threatening developers for not releasing what they wanted.

Then when Activision tried to get back to it and released Guitar Hero Live in an attempt to give fans something new and once it was received very negatively by the most active fan community who all went for Rock Band 4 and it died a very quick death.

I have very little experience with other rhythm game communities, but the Guitar Hero/Rock Band community, especially around 2009/2010 was extremely picky and hard to please. Nowadays it's better because most of the extremely vocal fans moved away and people are just happy that Harmonix is somehow still able to release regular DLC.

I want to say Musou because those games are so bad even at their best that I can't imagine lower standards. Realistically it's probably like.... Hidden object games? Gacha games? Do those even count?
