Wesley Crusher, the kid who can solve problems experienced Starfleet officers can't.
I hate him so much lol, makes certain seasons excruciating
Sadly not the real end

I immediately thought of Theon Greyjoy. Then I realized that "jerked off" is being used in a sense other than "jerked around."

It's Batman.

Kylo is petulant, but still dangerous and she bested him on try 1. She also held her own with Luke as a seasoned Jedi. For whatever reason, she is out the box amazing. This doesn't make her a bad character, but it does seem like she matches a lot of criteria of that's inspiring the mentions of many characters ITT.

Kylo wasn't trying to kill her.
Kylo had been shot.
Rey was full of anger and wild force instinct.

Vs Luke who was an out of practise Jedi master who had all but renounced the Force in an active way at least, vs a hugely force sensitive Jedi coming into her prime eager to learn?

It doesn't match the thread at all.

Also, Shirou Emiya as an example? Seriously? Aside from the fact that his character is notoriously misinterpreted by folks who haven't read the original VN (the problem is, the anime adaptations don't include the narration that convey just how utterly messed up the kid is. Remember the day out with Rin and Saber in UBW? He's feeling like shit and punishing himself mentally the whole time because he legitimately doesn't think he deserves to do something as mundane as enjoy a day off having fun with friends because of his survivor's guilt, and that is beyond messed up), his abilities aren't even oversold, he's literally only capable of taking on one very specific Servant-class character reliably without killing himself in the process. And even the story highlights that he's kind of an idiot who is seriously out of his depth in the Holy Grail War, at least at first.

Yep, the only time you might have an argument for Shirou being an example is in the Fate route, but then the original VN essentially treats all three routes as a three-stage long breakdown of Shirou as a character and his flaws. The Fate route is basically Act 1 to a story that goes on to really explore and show how broken a person Shirou is.

... Not to mention the utter hell that Shirou just barely manages to scrap his way through in the second half of the Heaven's Feel route.

Her skill with a light saber is unearned but otherwise nothing else about her is that far fetched given how Star Wars treats characters with the force. Anakin at 9 was building ships out of scrap and blowing up space stations in battles. People just conveniently know things or suddenly develop the ability to jump ten to twenty metres in the air between scenes.

It's gotta be Batman, in every incarnation, except, perhaps, TAS.

Paul Atreides, at least when it comes to the first book.

Apparently he actually struggles some in the sequels, but in Dune he's pretty much a proto-Kvothe.

He struggled in the first book. He is dealing with the consequences of his fuck up in the sequels, but that fuck up happened in the first book, and even that book does not have a happy ending, no matter how overpowered Paul seemed.

Paul wanted to prevent the jihad, but he wanted to take down the Baron and the Emperor more, so when he realized the Jihad was going to happen, he followed through anyway. Billions are slaughtered in his name. The Fremen become corrupted with power and greed. Paul's empire is terrible and bloody, everything the Atreides had ever stood for is washed away with blood and replaced with a sham religion. Paul hates all that he has wrought, but he is also trapped by it. If only he'd kept his head down in that first book...

Tony Stark in the MCU. Even when he's the villain, he's right. Was basically Nanomachine Jesus by the End of the recent phase

Will throw out the starting round with Dr. Doom, what a character.

-Impossibly powerfully plot armor that allows all of his defeats to have been robot clones having been defeated.
-His superpower is that he's just too good at everything.
-He's so good at everything that his country thrives under dictatorship.
-He's so good at everything that the only universes that do well in Marvel have to be ruled by Dr. Doom.
-Sensitive boy because his face is ugly.

Hmmm, not sure there are that many super jerked off characters that have become popular recently.

I'm not seeing the problem here

Doom always loses at the end. Revert to being a villain.

But Batman is Plot-armor: The Character.
At least something cool came after Snyder's failed attempt to create an MCU, Batman is no longer spotlight so we can look after characters like Aquaman, Shazam, even Joker alone :v

I wouldn't call it popular fiction, but FĂ«anor from The Silmarillion. Pretty much perfect in every way. The ultimate Elf, with his ego been his only flaw.
Nah, anyone reading that book can only see the so called "Mightest of the elves" as an insufferable moron. The dumbest of elves by far, with an amazingly stupid death fitting the character.

Not qualified for this thread at all.

But he's dead. He was actually able to be killed and so far with no signs of being brought back to life. That's more than you can say for most characters mentioned in this thread.

ITT:Men name Rey and Arya despite a metric fuckton of effort to justify the reasons why they are the way they are compared to male characters who need little justification other than a couple lines of exposition... *sigh* :|

Most of the good ones (Dr. Doom especially) have been mentioned already, here's a smaller scale one: Marie in Persona 4 Golden.

Her social link is about how the entire cast of the game loves her and wants to be her friend despite her being completely unlikeable. Her role in the main plot is even more insufferable.

Then they went and put her into the fighting game, into Persona Q (and probably Q2, not sure if she's in that one yet), and even commissioned an entire new Persona 4 anime almost purely dedicated to shoehorning in new scenes with her. The writers' fascination with that character is so bizarre to me.

Batman. This shouldn't even be a discussion. Batwank is absolutely ridiculous and nauseating.

No version of Batman could get past 616 Doom though. Might as well put him up against Thanos, it would be a fairer fight.
OP is *mostly* right about Doom in the description, though is off a few things here and there.

Pretty much.

"He was loser in real life, and only knew games and anime, just like you viewer! :D Then he died or walked through a portal, and went to another world where his game knowledge and basic deduction/reasoning skills makes him a genius god-being that never loses in anything. This new world is also filled with women of various ages/body types, who may or may not be his slaves, all extremely hungry for his dick and idiots that only exist to make him look better."

Like 95% of the genre is just the most bottom of the barrel trash.
This is why I like Overlord because he's so strong and has so many resources available was because he and his group of friends grinded and played the game so much before he was sent to the other world. That and his servants are NPCs he and and friends made to be strong and are designed worship him. So they assume this character on him and it goes on from there.

I changed it, but you can spoil the movie now if you want. Especially since a lot of it is all over Twitter.
Just because the Russos have now decreed when you should spoil the movie doesn't mean you can do it at will, especially if you're in a thread where the focus is covering a variety of other series, and really especially if they're off social media, avoiding when they can before finally getting to the theatre after a busy few weeks.

I know a lot of people love him, but Solid Snake.

"You're the legendary Solid Snake"
"It's so great to meet such a legend"
"So... The legendary Solid Snake..."

The series really swoons over his status constantly and reminding the audience at every chance.
In the defense of Snake, he always says, that he doesn't like the glory and that legends and reality never match.
This was also the point of MGS3, where Naked Snake becomes Big Boss and all the glory, was only a cover-up of the US. For Snake it was a slap in the face, since he know, that The Boss was just following their orders and her mission was to act as a traitor. Legends can be formed and destroyed at will.

completely forgot about Kvothe. Is that series EVER going to get done? or is Rothfuss going for the George R. R. Martin award in "never finishing this shit"

James Bond. Intentionally, of course.

Huh? Aside from the genius aspect, he spent the majority of AoU onwards fucking up and having his mistakes come back to bite his ass. Hardly what I call "author wank" material

Yep. The whole point of Civil War was that Tony was wrong and Cap was right, in fact.
Tony not being able to swallow his pride after that and just call Steve for 2 years is why everything went sideways during Infinity War and Thanos' forces won.

Harry Potter is insanely flawed and all of his power comes from the fact that Voldemort is obsessed with Harry due to an inferiority complex Voldemort has over his father being a Muggle.

Harry Potter is a normal child who has randomly become Wizard Hitler's white whale.

Yeah, Harry himself admits his exploits are combination of dumb luck and people more talented than him helping.

He's fucked up spectacularly at times
