A strange phenomenon, possibly due to the adaptation of HD or just loss of direction, was when the 7th gen was pretty rough on some of our favorite historical franchises from Japan. These are 6 games from big franchises that were met with controversy or underwhelmed fans:

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: SKYWARD SWORD
Focusing the entire game around Wii motion plus was already going to be tough to get everyone on board with. But skyward sword's egregious padding, constant tutorials and little to no sense of exploration made it the most controversial Zelda at the time of release, despite high reviews in general. This is the game that caused them to rethink the entire series

METROID: OTHER M
On paper, the prospect of a story focused Metroid sounds great on paper. But seeing it in practice just emphasized that the series should stick to environmental storytelling. Forced linearity thanks to story beats is the antithesis kf metroid. We can't leave out the elephant in the room of Samus' characterization - completely not what people expected out of her and borderline sexist to some people.

DMC: DEVIL MAY CRY
Capcom's reboot of the DMC franchise didn't necessarily have BAD gameplay to many people, but it didn't touch the depth of the previous two games in the series that the fans love. Not to mention the real problem - the new Dante lacked any charm of the old one. Many fans would argue Ninja Theory completely misinterpreted the tone of the series.

FINAL FANTASY XIII
FFXIII completely removed any sense of exploration from most of the game, just funneling characters down corridors. Not only that, players really couldn't experience the true battle system until the game was almost over. Add to that the characters and story being confusing and not resonating with lots of people, and you see why XIII was the most hated FF at the time of release

METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS
The highest rated game on this list, but that didn't stop fans from noticing the extremely off balance Gameplay:Cutscene ratio, going well beyond even Kojima's normally high volume of cutscenes. You could go over 30 minutes without playing. And then there's the subject of what's in the cutscenes themselves, MGS4's story and ending to the series remains controversial to this day. Fans thought it tied things up that were better left unsaid and ruined plot points retroactively from previous games

RESIDENT EVIL 6
Four separate campaigns meant too little focus on each of them, and to many fans, RE6 turned out bland and generic. And the story leaves much to be desired and seemed to rely too much on fanservice. Similar to skyward Sword, this prompted a reinvention of the franchise for RE7.

With all of those flaws in mind, I want to ask: which of these games, if any, did you manage to find the good in and get the most enjoyment out of? Did, for example, Skyward Sword's brilliant dungeon design, MGS4's tight gameplay and awesome setpieces, DmC's level design, FFXIII's gorgeous music and art style and fun battle system once it finally clicked, Other M's take on a quick and agile Samus, or RE6's fanservicey action romp do anything to overcome the commonly listed flaws of these games?

Skyward Sword is a legitimately great game so that one.

I also liked MGS4 and RE6 but agree that they were underwhelming. I had fun with both though.

Skyward Sword is a legitimately good game, albeit the weakest 3D Zelda.

All of the other games are mediocre at best, and abysmal at worst. I'm looking at you, Final Fantasy 13.

DmC is a great game in its own right, that was only brought down by its association with the franchise. It also had some of the best level-design out of the entire series and the necessary weapon-switching was a fun mechanic to work around in hectic fights.

As for Dante's "charm", both versions are knobheads, knock it off.

For the record, I would place SS and XIII over some of the golden age games of their series (OoT and IX for example)

I also love MGS4 only a little less than 1-3, and find Other M to Be full of interesting ideas that just needed better execution.

I haven't fully played DmC and RE6 but hope to soon.

But yeah I'm just going by concensus here. I guess I could've also put Lords of Shadow and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Maybe a sonic game but I feel like they were all generally considered bad lol

Skyward Sword is a fantastic game. Some of the best dungeon design in the series, and the characters are all memorable.

Interesting going by the poll, although you'd find each fanbase of these series' constantly at war over these respective games, MGS4 and SS prove to be a good bit better than the others. They're also higher on meta by a fair amount too. MGS4 94 and SS 93.

Skyward sword is fun, but I can understand why many would would be upset when the big new Zelda game comes out and that's what they get. I feel like if people went back to it with an open mind and approached it on its own terms many could agree it's a fun game. It's like a Mario game in many ways. It throws specific, fun ideas at the player then moves on to the next thing. Sure fighting the imprisoned a few times was pretty lame, but you spend the vast majority of the time doing new and fun things.

Final Fantasy XIII is so beautiful in so many aspects, the battle system is extremly interesting also. Too bad it was too long.

I love Resident Evil 6 despite its flaws. I don't think we'll ever see as complex and cheesy TPS as it ever again which is sad.
If I ever somehow directed a game RE6 would be a big inspiration for it.

This just makes me think how underwhelming last gen was for a lot of stuff lol

It's good the thread went with both controversial or underwhelming, because MGS4 was a huge accomplishment back in 2008, even if there were some questionable design decisions. Definitively controversial.

The reason I primarily hated Skyward Sword was actually the dungeon design, which I thought was the weakest of the 3D Zeldas, with the exception of the ship. That you can throw the padding and tutorialisation and lack of meaningful exploration on top of that is really what sinks it to the bottom of this list of games for me.

Imo Skyward Sword is really good, would probably put it at the same tier as OoT for me, not top 3 material but up there. I tend to not care much about overworlds in Zelda games tho, as i appreciate the dungeons a lot more. It's my vote.

Also really like DmC, and couldn't get into the classical series at all. Donte > Dante : V

FFXIII is really interesting. Best combat system in the series imo, but easily the worst pacing and most monotonous gameplay loop. I legit like the unpopular main character host, tho the villains are whatever af. It's a game with a great premise and disappointing ending. Not nearly as good as say Snes/PS1 FFs but i quite like it.

RE6 is also fun stuff. Obviously not what i wanted from RE but i could say the same for RE4.

Metroid Other: M is probably at the bottom of the list. Really problematic game with tons of bs. Still don't think it's a complete garbage tho, exploration was kinda fun. 5,5/10 game.

Never played MGS4 but i pretend to eventually.

Love Skyward Sword. Twilight Princess had really sucked me out of the franchise, so that brought me back in.

Skyward Sword is among my top ten games of all time, so this is a very easy question.

Skyward Sword. Even a medicore zelda is better than the vast majority of games.

FF13 would be the only one i really dislike, but that was more because they kept pushing the series past the first game.

Skyward Sword has some of the coolest dungeons of the franchise, if only the parts inbetween the temples weren't so tedious and if Fi wasn't so insistent on solving the game for you it could be one of the best 3D Zeldas.

Skyward Sword was great. More dungeon-like overworld, great actual dungeons, some really cool settings and concepts (time stones <3), and likeable characters.

It has a couple of missteps like having to fight that one boss too many times, but they don't make it a bad game on the whole.

Skyward Sword has some fairly big issues - overreliance on motion controls, dungeons were a mixed bag, too much going back to the same three regions, tear drop quests - but overall I quite enjoyed it. So I'll go with that. MGS4 is next up, which is also a mixed bag with weak boss battles and awkward gameplay set pieces (sneaking escort mission...?), but I still enjoyed it.

Of what I've played FF13. Actually a really good game and I liked the sequels progressively. I also like MGS4 quite a bit. I didn't hate DmC but it was a massive letdown. You'd think the compromises it made in combat i.e axing Nero and neutering Dante would mean that other areas would be better but nope those are either worse or just as average: Soundtrack worse, Level design just as average, Main story just as average, Characters much worse and less charming. Only graphics and environment designs are kinda better.

RE6. It's the worst mainline RE but eh, I platinumed it twice and it's a lot of fun. Plus, best Mercenaries mode in the whole series. MGS4 is a better game (best on this list even) but yeah, gotta throw my vote to RE6.

out of all those DmC is probably the only one that "aged" well, fwiw. at least that's the only one of those i'd care to kick back with without it being a chore.

maaaybe mgs4 with a remaster
