Trick question, the answer is and always will be Twin Snakes. I mean c'mon, it has not only the greatest cutscenes known to man, but an updated control scheme that feels like it has caught up with the present and graphics that kick the shit out of the original's "look i was built with legos" appeal.

I MEAN LOOK AT THIS:

Give this man a round of applause, please.

And of course we can't forget how awesome the Ninja looked, too

This is it. This is what gaming has led to. If more games were like this then the world would be a much better place.

Meanwhile you have people championing...whatever this is:

Looks like he's wearing a burlap sack over his head. How did people deal with these graphics back then?

Honestly I could keep going, but I've already made my point. There's no need to keep MGS1 around aside for nostalgia purposes. Twin Snakes is the real deal, and should honestly get some sort of remake so people can play the TRUE version of Kojima's masterpiece.

Twin Snakes is fantastic and it's a real shame its not included in the HD collections. I'd really like to play it again with cleaned up visuals rather than on the old Gamecube disc.

Twin Snakes also has better play control, better gameplay, and better boss fights. Everything about the PS1 game is too dated, obviously it's from the PS1 era. The graphics make my eyes bleed and the play control has no aged well at all. It's a chore to sit through these days. If Twin Snakes didn't exist I'd probably never revisit the MGS1 era, I'm so happy the remake exists.

It's better than the original in every single way for me.

Twin Snakes is the only metal gear solid next to revengeance that UNDERSTANDS the tone the metal gear franchise with it's ghost arms need

Twin Snakes has horrendous re-recorded dialogue (Naomi's VO in particular is just spectacularly lifeless) and the soundtrack has been changed robbing much, if not all of the original's atmosphere. Additionally, the introduction of MGS 2 mechanics such as first person aiming pretty much breaks the game.

That said, the Ryuhei Kitamura directed cutscenes are pretty bad ass.

BTW, does Nintendo still partially own Twin Snakes? Is it a Goldeneye situation where it can never be re-released because of co-ownership between Konami and Nintendo?

Fun fact: There are Mario and Yoshi Amiibo's in this game...from 2004. Twin Snakes predicated the Amiiboo's over a decade before they existed.

Twins Snakes plays infinitely better but fuck the change in music and turning Snake into even more of some super hero. Like he did some crazy stuff in the original but Twin Snakes made it laughably over the top, even for Metal Gear Solid as a series.

No seriously Twin Snakes music makes me not want to play it. Why did they change it?

Other than broken bosses, yeah Twin Snakes is better in almost every way.

I wonder if we'll ever get a re-release of it considering the entire Silicon Knights fiasco.

I played MGS1 a lot at a friend's when it was new, although I never did beat it back then. I still think I'd prefer to play Twin Snakes nowadays if I were to do a playthrough these days.

I can't tell if the OP is being sarcastic or not, though...

PS1 version.

Twin Snakes is the war hero version of the story where shit was embellished as fuck.

Also the MGS 2 aiming just straight up breaks the game lol

I feel like we just had this thread, because I remember thinking at the time it was weird that you Twin Snake crazies had clung to your Matrix DVDs so tightly.

Solid Snake is a superhero in a series with villains with superpowers. I don't see the problem. Any normal soldier would be killed instantly in his situation.

Plus the villains are so dumb anyway they spend half their time taunting Snake or letting him get the drop on them when Snake stands around dumbdfounded and clueless in all the cutscenes when he first meets them.

You pain me with this thread, Beef. I will never forget this.

Anyway, I will always choose the original PS1 version. The atmosphere, the VO, sound mixing, etc. All better in the PS1 version. Twin Snakes takes away most things I like about MGS1.

I respectfully disagree, but I will always appreciate that TS has those pipes in the metal gear hanger to let you cheese the pal card stuff
I agree with this, though.

Twin snakes is MGS on negative IQ difficulty level. The game was designed considering a very specific set of mechanics and then TS completely changes that BUT keeps all the rest! So the game is an unbalanced mess.
Cool scenes and trolly OP though.

The problem is his portrayal was not the same as the original, He did some dumb cheesy shit but Twin Snakes cranked it to 11 because the people at Silicon Knights had huge boners for The Matrix. Doing a flip over a doorway is the dumbest shit and literally accomplished nothing. They just added it just because. It didn't add anything.

Twin Snakes for sure.

I recently placed through the original PS1 version again and the experience was less than stellar for sure.

For me it's almost exclusively down to controls too.
Twin Snakes just controls so much better. I like the additions in Snake's moveset from MGS2. Just makes the game feel better.
Being able to aim in first person makes boss fights and even regular encounters more interesting.
It's just better.

Another problem I had with the original was that it had extreme input last for some reason? Bit I don't know if that was introduced by my PS3 or not (played the PAL version too).

Anyway, Twin Snakes for life!

Twin Snakes really is a fantastic game.

I’d love for enough IP acquisitions to happen that someday they’ll put it out again. Never say never.

I guess objectively it would be Twin Snakes. On a technical level the graphics are superior and that's something you can easily measure. However, the direction of the cutscenes is different and that's something that's going to split opinion.

On an emotional level, I have attachment to the original but really I like them both the same.

The original version is the best version to play for the first time and to replay multiple times. Several reasons. The cutscenes are better and more consistent with the tone of the story as it was written. The gameplay is more balanced. And it is more widely available on current platforms and portable on the Vita. Still looks great today.

Twin Snakes is worth playing once just to see what MGS1 would be like with over the top DMC style cutscenes and MGS2 gameplay artificially edited in. Overall it just doesn't hold up as well but it's a fun fan experiment.
