HOUSTON — Students at Memorial High School sparked controversy after turning a spirit week event into “thug day.”

As many as 30 students went to school Tuesday dressed in chains, jerseys, fake tattoos, and corn rows, before administrators announced they would cancel the rest of spirit week.

The local community reacts.

Chron said:
"Look, I think it was an over-reaction by people," said Todd Forbes, who graduated from Memorial High School in the early 1980's. "I think it might've been inappropriate, but the school over-reacted, too. And if that's racist, then I must be missing something."

Other former students of the school found the attire more offensive.

Robert Boyd, a Memorial High School graduate, commented on a private Facebook group, "If you can't see how 'Thug Day' is obviously racist, you might be from Memorial HS. (Class of '81 here.)"

Since I saw it was from Houston I didn't expect blackface. Shoutout to Paul Wall. A lot better than it could have been.

100% less black face than I expected.
Still pretty gross.

Sad.
Not one person dressed up as a bad guy from Double Dragon or Final Fight... All of which would have been appropriate thug costumes.
