A man suspected of planning to attack a Missouri hospital was killed during a shootout with F.B.I. agents, the authorities said on Wednesday.

The deadly encounter took place on Tuesday afternoon in suburban Belton, Mo., after agents on a tactical team tried to arrest the man as part of a domestic terrorism investigation.
It was not clear whether the man was killed by F.B.I. agents or died by suicide. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials identified the man as Timothy R. Wilson, 36.

According to officials, Mr. Wilson had expressed racist and anti-government sentiments. He had been under F.B.I. scrutiny since September, and the authorities said that at one point he had considered attacking multiple targets, including a school with a large number of black students, as well as a mosque and a synagogue.

"Wilson considered various targets and ultimately settled on an area hospital in an attempt to harm many people, targeting a facility that is providing critical medical care in today's environment," the F.B.I. said in a statement.

Last week, Belton's mayor issued a stay-at-home order for its residents. Authorities said Mr. Wilson said he felt compelled to act because of the mayor's order and intended to use a car bomb to cause mass casualties at the hospital.

Wilson was killed Tuesday when he allegedly showed up armed to pick up an inert explosive device supplied by authorities. He was injured and taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.​

"Wilson had taken the necessary steps to acquire materials needed to build an explosive device. Wilson was under investigation by the FBI for nearly 18 months.​

Wilson was planning to use a vehicle bomb to blow up a local hospital that was treating COVID-19 patients, according to the FBI. He arrived in Belton on Tuesday to pick up what he believed was the bomb, but the bureau said it was all part of a ruse. "There was no actual bomb," the FBI said in its news release.

Wilson was active on the encrypted social messaging platform Telegram under the name "Werwolfe 84," according to a source.

Using that information and with the help of Elon University computer science professor Megan Squire, The Informant was able to determine on Wednesday that Wilson was active in public Telegram channels for two neo-Nazi groups: the National Socialist Movement (NSM) and Vorherrschaft Division (VSD).

Wilson was active in the public Telegram chat for the NSM as recently as Tuesday afternoon. He wrote that he believed the COVID-19 pandemic was being used by the government as an "excuse to destroy our people."

"Mark my words it's coming I hope people are ready," he wrote.

The day prior, he used antisemitic language to comment about an article on the coronavirus outbreak.

"If you don't think this whole thing was engineered by Jews as a power grab here is more proof of their plans," Wilson wrote. "Jews have been playing the long game we are the only ones standing in their way."

It really sounds like part of the decision-making process behind this would have been the media-frenzy around attacking a hospital now, of all times. Calculated for maximum controversy and media exposure.

And see, I thought last night's FBI and FBI: Most wanted episodes were a little far fetched... They featured white supremacists trying to bomb a ceremony for new US citizens.

And here this guy was going after a hospital! Talk about sick... glad they caught him before he did any damage.
