I feel like Reaganomics can be eroded away and reeled in, whereas the Pandora's box of electing someone like Trump - a reality TV goon who brags about sexual assault, shooting people, and asks for help from foreign countries (and still gets elected) - is a harder thing to undo.
reagan was also a movie star though. he laid that groundwork too.

Trump is purposefully starving states of critical aid by forcing them to bid against each other. He then strategically outbids states like Massachusetts and New Mexico, both blue.

The death toll doubles every 4-5 days. As I type this it's at 1195. By Tuesday or Wednesday next week, another 1200+ Americans will be dead.

As I type this, hospitals in Michigan are reaching ventilator capacity and have begun sending out notices like the below, from Henry Ford Health:
EUFsboWUMAQ42Q0

None of this is shocking! It's exactly what happened/is happening in Italy and Italian medical professionals have been screaming at the West to take heed for weeks.

We are now the global epicenter for the corona virus, surpassing China and Italy. China just announced it will be closing its borders as of Saturday, likely to prevent the West from exporting it back onto their land as they slowly exit from this crisis.

In NYC, bodies are now being placed in refrigerator trucks and ice rinks are being reserved for the dead.

ATL, NOLA, and Florida will follow behind NYC in several days.

We're about to have unemployment at levels surpassing the Great fucking Depression, with a healthcare system tied to employment during a national health crisis.

Trump adamantly REFUSES to use the Defense Production Act, and has his task force lying to the public that there is no supply shortage despite the mountains of first hand accounts in text, audio and video form from medical workers nationwide.

New Mexico is being left to fend for itself by Trump and we're the poorest blue state in the Union and the second overall behind Mississippi. We've got 350 icu beds and most of those are already in use.

Speaking of Mississippi, its DUMB FUCK governor just overrode his mayors and reopened his state.

I'm too tired and too exhausted to gather these thoughts into anything but a jumbled list. To answer the OP: It's fucking Donald Trump.

That box has been open since the election of Reagan, that's the point (not a reality TV goon, but a sitcom television goon equally if not more incompetent and hateful).

The GOP has since been devolving to the endpoint of what Reagan's legacy started.

Trump.

Yes, Reagan and Bush had major issues - but they acted like they were the president of an entire country. Trump's behavior has been devastating for the office moving forward. He has normalized disgusting behaviors that we at least used to hide from public view. I've never been more disgusted than I am right now.
Trump because at least with other presidents we didn't think and hear about them all day. Fuck the clown show.
I don't get answers like these.

It honestly doesn't fucking matter that Reagan presented himself as a "regular" president. What matters were his actions and how he blatantly pioneered a wave evil actions that still affect us to this day.

I'm inclined to say W...I think there are things we still haven't recovered from.

However, Regan, I feel like, set the stage for the modern republican party (though I wasn't alive prior, so maybe I'm off). Someone on page one referred to him as Patient Zero, and that's apt.

Kinda nuts that Nixon; who intentionally extended the Vietnam war behind everyone's back just to make sure he could get elected, might not even make semi-finals of this playoff, lol

Even more nuts when you consider that Nixon — whose strategist fully set in motion, successfully, the Southern Strategy — is that low.

Everything Trump and Reagan stand for, the racism coded as economic concern, is a byproduct of that.

The answer is 100% Nixon.

Shit, I think you win.

America's bigotry issues were mostly sociologically driven which affected government as a natural byproduct...Southern Strategy feels like that was a turning point where on a national level you can play with bigotry for big big wins. The crassness of previous racist based campaigns, ie George Wallace, American's couldn't completely swallow but with the Southern strategy it was just beautiful bigoted violin music.

It's never disappeared too, but just morphed. We went from minorities to being demonized for easy political wins to 'those elites with their FACTS think you're better then them but THEY are the stupid ones' with the same exact playbook

I totally understand the arguments for Reagan and W.Bush being the worst.
From an international point of view, Trump has absolutely destroyed foreign relations and significantly lowered global opinion of the United States to an all time low.

From an international point of view Bush dragged them to his fake wars or straight bombed them.

This is all true but I think many are going by who is invoked by the modern party as being the source of there current agenda. That is Regan more than Nixion, who most Republicans now disavow.

Though I think people saying that Reagan set up for a reality TV star like Trump to be elected are a little incorrect. It's not like Ronald Reagan went from being a movie star celebrity to being the president. He was the governor of California for 12 years first, by the time he was elected he had been he'd been a politician for over a decade.

Trump just decided to run for president to satisfy his own ego. Reagan at least actually wanted to be a politician.

Damage to whom?

- Nixon is guilty of orchestrating coups in South America. My father grew fatherless, I never met any of my grandfathers. So fuck Nixon.
- Reagan popularized the fucking mess of a system we are in now. So it's less personal and more longer term.
- Trump completed what many others have been doing for decades. Making the government a joke. I don't know if we can recover from people not having a minimum standard for people working in government and people we vote for.

I voted Nixon, but it's more of a personal choice.

Reagan and W caused way more "real" damage, but I think Trump will prove to be the most harmful.

Bringing insane conspiracies into the mainstream.
Stoking a crazy culture war in the minds of his base.
Making ignorance fashionable.
The weird feedback loop of right wing media and his own crazy persona.

He has almost no definable stance on anything, yet all the most reprehensible groups of people can project their views onto. I can't remember any other president invading almost every aspect of the news and mainstream pop culture.

All of this lining up with the prevalence of social media and youtube. People can't tell the difference between a troll/bot/ideologue.

People like McConnell and Gingrich..(maybe Sarah Palin for being rewarded for her complete stupidity) should also be mentioned.

It's 1am but who started the war on drugs? Because fuck them. It has had a insanely negative impact in so many areas of society especially in policing and how us minorities are treated.

Citizens United is also very damaging and has made the US government work for the rich even more.

They're all pretty terrible. Can I just pick all of the above?
That would be Nixon, but yeah, they all suck hard.

No matter how hard Trump completely fumbles on COVID, its not nearly as costly as Bush bringing war and instability to a region and causing insurmountable damage for decades.

In the context of the modern world: it's Trump.

He's literally turned the clocks back on progress across the board and has normalized hate and emboldened bigotry. To the point it's become an every day thing to spew malice and bile that people were too cowardly to 5 years ago, and it's only getting worse.

I honestly do not think it's even a contest.
I would rather be called an N-word in public by a faux toughguy Trumper than have the CIA flood my hood with crack cocaine.

To be honest, giving Trump another term would not only fuck up the US, but would also destroy the Republican/GOP party completely.

There's never been a Republican president who's so very hated in his first three & a quarter years besides Trump. He goes far & beyond what George Bush Sr. & George Bush Jr. have done & is a much worse Ronald Reagan (even though he's awful himself!).

The likes of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan set the stage for everything we're seeing so I'd say them by far but, of course, we shouldn't forget those who lost the elections, like Barry Goldwater. Really, all of these bastards are fucking terrible

As much of a dickhead Trump is, it's still W. Trump isn't responsible for 6 million deaths and trillions upon trillion spent on a war of aggression that we're still dealing with 17 years later.

Reagan was the president who began the 'government is always bad no regulation's bullshit.

Don't get me wrong. Fucking all of them were horribly damaging to the country.

Most of these presidents seem to be defined by their aftermath years after the fact, while trump is approaching them pretty quick during his first term. While not being there yet, that's nuts it's own way.

Trumps going to end up killing hundreds of thousands to millions of Americans with his Coronavirus response once this is all over. Or rather, his response to the Coronavirus. It didn't have to be like this, we didn't have to lose that many. But this is on him. Congrats guys, he finally topped GWB and Reagan!

If you want a really in-depth rundown of what a monumental bastard Reagan was (long before he ever became President, too), I highly recommend this episode of The Dollop podcast:

Thanks for turning me on to a new podcast. While I consider myself somewhat politically literate, I had no idea that Nancy Reagan was the blowjob queen of Hollywood.

This is something black people will prob only get. Sure trump may have emboldened racists but Reagan kinda destroyed any progress we may have had going into the 80's. All those federal programs that helped black people in the 70's were cut. Then as you said crack and Aids

Trump is incompetent and racist but as much as he may have tried he's not going to completely destroy communities

I'd tie Trump and Reagan. Both have essentially become Conservative deities praised and worshiped as political gods. Both are exemplars of how fundamentally ugly the Republican party is and each make a case on their own that the GOP shouldn't be taken seriously as political opponents since they do nothing but make humanity worse on a national and global level.

I'd call ripping apart families and imprisoning those stolen children in internment camps has destroyed a community and traumatized an entire generation. Trump is an imbecile but he's also a bigot surrounded by more competent bigots like Stephen Miller, Pence, and Steve Bannon. There's going to be a long tail to, not just the rhetoric, but legislational & political choices (such as rolling back environmental protection or appointing conservative SC judges) of the Trump administration just like Reagan's which is why I personally tie them.

Reagan and it isn't even close.

He destroyed unions and the image of unions, removing leverage from workers and that coupled with his economic policy accelerated the wealth gap we see today.

His tough on crime stance skyrocketed the prison population and his administration is responsible for undermining the growth of left economic systems in Latin America through his backing of fascist dictators with regressive regimes because they opposed socialism and communism.

The war on drugs? Reagan's administration either directly or indirectly introduced crack into the inner city (it doesn't matter if it was intentional or not) because the CIA we're backing contras.

Trump and Bush suck, but they don't hold a candle to the damage that the Reagan administration did to the world.

Reagan is also responsible for pushing the GOP to a near fascist far right and I'd argue trump wouldn't even exist if not for Reagan.

Yeah man lol. We live an entirely different existence from mainstream America. I was having this exact discussion a few months ago with white family members. They could not get over obsessing over Trump or understand why I put Reagan as a worse president. They couldn't sit there and just think hard about the implications of the crack epidemic, Reagan's complicity, and all the destruction that came along with it.

I admit my social circle at this point isn't that diverse but between 2016 and now, Trump has clearly affected my White friends' and families mental health while on the Black side it was "man... White people are up to their usual bullshit, what's new??". We are all experiencing Trump together, the difference in reaction in my circle has been interesting.

Therapists have mentioned that the '16 election and Trump have been brought up in therapy. Well what population is more likely to have access to a therapist? I may as well be a Martian, I can't relate to the white Liberal psyche. I keep having to remind my circle that he is the symptom and to keep up with the energy even after he leaves.

When it's all said and done, and the American landscape is strewn with millions of bodies and our status as a world superpower has been crippled, due directly to his sociopathic negligence during this pandemic crisis, his incompetence, and his criminality, there is no doubt in my mind that Trump will go down in history as the most destructive president in US history.*

* Assuming that there won't be an American state left in his wake that is so totalitarian as to suppress all dissenting public opinion.

Initially voted for GWB but changed to Reagan when I saw the popular tally. Y'all are right.

He set the template, and have given modern GOP-ers a gentle statesman to hide their monstrous beliefs behind. It's him, no question.

Trump doesn't happen without Reagan.

GWB not only killed Americans but also orders of magnitudes more afghans and Iraqis. The death count for GWB's criminal wars is still ongoing, add to that the utter shambles the Iraqi Healthcare system is in which gwb didn't help.

As bad as any president was, none has effected my everyday life as Trump is doing now. We talk about worst presidents based off era's, but Trump just might end up the worst of all time.
