Why is golf so popular among the wealthy?

It's popular because rich people play it, poor people don't, and fox hunting isn't in vogue anymore.

It's a show of status and power. Most golf courses take up huge swaths of land and are often associated with exclusionary groups like country clubs.

Time and money are great to have for leisure sports.

Golf is such a great game. I adore it. Not rich enough to get to the greens as much as I'd like. lol

Golf isn't nearly as expensive as I think some think it is. It's actually pretty cheap, unless you're at some fancy membership one.

If you want to see expensive, go play the most blue collar sport there is - bowling. It's gotten so expensive, I'm surprised they don't run a credit check before you can hit the lanes. lol
How is it not expensive? You need clubs to play which cost hundreds of dollars, even for beginner clubs. Sure you can buy some used clubs for less, but it's still going to be much more expensive than bowling. You even have to bring your own balls. Have you seen the cost of golf balls? It's atrocious. Unless you buy some used or recycled balls.

C'mon. You can rent bowling shoes and the balls are included. How much can one game cost? $10? You're looking at double that at minimum for a round of golf assuming you find a deal on golfnow.

And that's not even considering the other crap you can buy that isn't necessary required - golf shoes, bag, glove, etc. And that's assuming you own the required pants/shorts, golf shirt, etc that they require to even let you play. Oof!

Only filthy poors use the loaner shoes and balls!

Real talk, I haven't played a game under $10 in a while.

Right there is an initial cost with golf, sure.

And $10 for one bowling game is ludicrous (and I've been to ones where it was like $20/per). To hit the lanes for a couple hours would be at least $100. That's multiple rounds of golf. And if you're a bowler, you aren't using a house ball. You have your own, which a good ball costs a few hundred bucks.

My local golf course costs £2.50 per round. Also golf clubs do not cost hundreds of dollars. I got a full set for like £30. They're shit but then so am I.

My other local course costs £6 per round but they were also dumb enough to put the ticket house out of site of the course so you only ever pay if they decide to patrol

It started as a game for the wealthy and even now is still a game for the wealthy. The country club itself helps keep out less desirables, and such it's a status symbol.

Wow, golf is cheap in the UK. It's multiple times more expensive here in the states. And the cheapest set of clubs I could find through googling was still over $200. I guess you could just buy a driver, an iron and a putter piecemeal for cheap. Ehhhh

It costs a lot of money which removes "the poors" from the running right out of the gate.

Courses are extremely curated but still outdoors so you get the best of both worlds.

You can be lazy af if you pay a caddy to carry your shit around and ride a cart everywhere.

Lots and lots and lots of downtime so you can schmooze players all you want

The actual sport itself is still technical so the players can feel accomplished

These are municipal courses run by local councils to be fair.

Actual private golf courses are super expensive

Lol at some of the stereotypes from people who have obviously not played golf.

Most courses aren't 'private and exclusive' those are called Country Clubs. Most people play at public courses - our city park district runs several of them here.

It's not crazy expensive compared to anything else, either - people spend just as much on gear to go hiking or fishing as they would on golf clubs and a pair of soft spikes. There are really expensive brands of clubs, just like anything else, but the average golfer doesn't buy them.

Golf is pretty cheap for the hours of play. Its only like 20-30 dollars for a public course for like 2-3 hour worth of play time.

Plus its pretty easy to get cheap golf clubs, you can get some pretty good ones just visiting a few yard/garage/church sale.

Golf isn't popular with young people. The sport and its associated industries have been in decline with the rise in age and subsequent death of older generations. Wealth is concentrated at the top of society which is mostly older people. Upward mobility for younger generations is low historically.

I think that about sums it up. Even Tiger's Masters win isn't expected to attract any significant interest despite years of people saying there was no Tiger for the sport to reach the numbers it used to.

The higher end Country Clubs will set you back a 100K initiation fee and 1K month in dues.

The nicer the course the more you pay generally. The cheaper courses are $20 or under to play and expensive ones 500+.

Golf is super challenging, impossible to master, and that's the greatest appeal IMHO. It's the most fun with friends and family.

It costs a good amount of money to play, there's a sense of exclusivity and being elite at the nicest places to play plus requires the least amount of physical effort to actually pay.

So rich old white dudes are all about it.

who else would spend thousands of dollars on clubs, clothes, and memberships just to waste hours of time doing it?

It’s expensive, all the rich sports are just expensive for no reason. Why you think they keep adding horses, because you’re too poor to own a horse.

It may be a cultural thing but here in the UK plenty of average joes play golf. They may not play it regularly but it's really not expensive to get an entry level set of clubs and go for a round at a local course.

Of course, enjoying a round of golf and buying into the golf image are totally different things. If you want to play at the exclusive clubs and buy all the trendy gear, yeah it's gonna cost you a fortune and require you to be part of the right social clique.
I know somebody who works in a golf shop in St Andrews and in his own words he sells overpriced stuff to people with more money than sense.

I played miniature golf with my friends once and I was surprised at how much fun it was. I imagine I'd be having a blast if I played real golf.

Yup. As long as it fits into their "hate the rich" agenda.
There are a lot more public golf courses than private clubs. Plenty of people play at all income levels. It's not anywhere near as expensive and exclusive as some want to believe.

It's pretty much the same in the US but people like to post on forums regardless of whether they have any knowledge on the subject.

My first major workplace had a HUGE golf league that played every year and it was cool b/c it was a mix of all the various levels of employees thrown into a blender for teams. They played on various public courses around the area and it was a good way for people to get to know each other regardless of role/rank.

I mean, you kind of hit on the answer. Golf tends to be popular in wealthier locations where lower population density allows the space for courses. Why is basketball so popular in China while Tennis and Golf fall to the wayside or are otherwise the domains of the wealthy? Space.
I don't really get the waste of space angle either. If the land is readily available it's a lot more beautiful waste of space than a few more strip malls or another half-dozen churches and banks.

I love golf. But if you want a real answer: it’s the barrier to entry. It’s a relatively expensive sport to play frequently which excludes a majority of the population. It’s entirely status related.

If shit in a cardboard box was expensive and nobody could afford it they would want it because nobody else could have it.

Low population density isn't necessarily about wealth. I'm originally from a midwest 'country' town of only 20k people and there were several public courses and a country club. The people I saw at the public courses on the regular were not 'high society' folks in any sense, except maybe weed.

I dunno if this logic follows through as Korea is a hotbed for golf and its quite dense and not very large of a country.

Golf honestly sounds like my ideal hobby, and something I hope to get into.

Walking around in the fresh air, in a purposefully beautiful and well maintained environment. A bit of friendly competition mixed in.

Sounds ultra relaxing tbh.

And I don’t think the barrier to entry is anywhere near as high as some people make out.

People are saying it’s expensive. How expensive? Like I need to spend 5-figure money just to get started?
In general, spend a couple hundred bucks on a set of clubs at Dicks and maybe buy some special shoes. Of course you can garage sale/Craigslist these things or spend thousands if desired.

I mean you need golf balls too but that's sort of an ongoing thing.

I attended a college that had a lot of pretty broke students that managed to golf. There was a university course and people would just find a deal on some used clubs, and we often shared them. Nobody wore golf shoes in that environment. I just passed my clubs on to a younger student when I graduated b/c I didn't plan to keep at it.

Some more thoughts, echoing some things other folks have said here:
Recycled balls you can get huge friggin' boxes of for like $20 or less. (PS: neon colored balls are GREAT, especially if you're still working on your aim) Tees are also pretty dang cheap.

If you're interested in getting in at the lowest level you can, I'd strongly encourage picking up some cheap clubs at your nearby thrift stores.

Oh, please. I can hate the rich and enjoy golf
Yep. When I was in high school, I had a job as a caddy at an exclusive club....let’s call it Pine Valley. There were a COUPLE of cool members there who I wouldn’t mind having a beer or three with, but there was certainly a lot of snobbery, and clearly a good bit of just in your face racism.

But...if you like the game for what it is, my experience caddying shouldn’t diminish my enjoyment of the game. I go to pretty inexpensive courses that could use the money, and I still have a plenty good time. And, while my local course states on a sign that “you must wear proper golf attire”...they don’t give a fuck. I’ve seen plenty of people playing there wearing jeans and a regular t-shirt. They just want their $20. Mileage may vary; some local courses will stick to the “rules of decorum” (harumph, harumph) more than others, but I just stick to the ones that don’t.

Just like some hobbies the upfront cost can be expensive but if you look right you can get used sets for a good price. When my dad was still alive he bought a mesh bag of golf balls for like $15 and had like maybe 50 in the bag. Look for Wilson, Taylor Made, and maybe Callaway sets.

A couple of bucks to get a bucket of balls at the driving range and just pocket four or five of em.

Thank you.

This almost sounds like console gaming level costs. Not that bad if you ask me. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, then don’t golf. Otherwise, it doesn’t sound that bad if you use pre-owned stuff.
