How did sucks make it into our lexicon as a negative connotation?

Shit sucks
That sucks
Man that's sucky
Sucks for you
You suck

When most actual uses of the word are positive?

Sucking tits
Sucking dicks
Suck soda through a straw
Vacuums suck up dirt
Etc...

My completely uneducated assumption would be that it is a negative because, way back when, oral sex both had a homophobic connotation and men going down on women was seen as "unmanly".

Before someone goes mounting a soap box to try and turn this into some violation of some person or another it was originally connotated as something along the lines of sucking hind teet or sucking eggs.

I know some parents considered it "vulger language" when I was a kid in the 80's or early 90's, so maybe it evolved from some older homophobic insult like "cock sucker"?

It's a pretty ancient term. Calling someone "a suck" used to mean they were a crybaby or a loser or something, although you don't really see that use anymore.

Someplace Far Away
Many many many years ago I first discovered that men eating pussy or having anal sex with women is sometimes considered "queer". I didn't understand it when I was but a young boy and I don't understand it now.
The most I'm willing to share on here is that it'd be a very sad existence without the former and I think living through most of human history would have been a real downer. I can take or leave the latter

It’s a pretty old term and not necessarily related to sex. I think it was considered childish?

iirc it turns up in Lord of the Flies. Something like “sucks to your asthma”, I believe.

It begin in the early 30s when people used to tell others they didn't like to suck a fart directly from their asshole.

Its use in sexist/homophobic pejoratives helps reinforce its popularity as a negative word, much like the other four-letter-word that rhymes with it. Honestly you could probably find correlations like that in... a lot of the most disparaging language.

Pretty sure it comes from using "sucking dick" as a homophobic insult. At some point it was shortened to just "sucks," and now it's ubiquitous.

Because that’s just how things are. Like how if something kicks ass it’s good even though being kicked in the ass is not a particularly fun experience

Looking around on google, there's evidence showing this is the origin, but the phrase gained greater popularity with it's association to fellatio around the '30s. So is it's origin homophobic? No! And then yes.
