This thread really isn't about how good or bad Persona 5's UI is, but we all know that P5 had garnered a lot of praise for it's graphic design, and how it set a new standard for video games. I think it's pretty deserved. But just half a year before it came out worldwide, we had Dishonoured 2. Hot take time: I think Dishonoured 2's UI on an art level looks just as good as Persona 5's in some aspects, and surpasses it sometimes. Yet, I have barely seen any mention of the gorgeous menus by people online, versus Persona 5.

The main menu sets a nice tone, and atmosphere.

The aesthetic fits the game, is stylish, and the animations are smooth as fuck.

I understand that this question is really, really weirdly specific, but this is just something that's been on my mind since I started playing Dishonoured 2 (Which happened to be after Persona 5).

Because you use them like 100 times less than you do a turn based RPG.

Would imagine part of it is that you spend a lot more time in menus in persona compared to dishonoured.

I don't think they're even close to the same level of snazzy. A lot of games have that swoopy 'moving between keyframes' look, like the Arkham series, etc. That and the dumb micro-pauses while it loads like in the 2nd gif.

honestly i thought it was a bit off putting (in D2). not enough for me to "dislike" it but i could've done with hum drum vanilla UI just as well

Sadly because it didn't receive much praise until like a year and half after it released. Prey as well, Arkane out here making the best games no one will play. Rectify that if you haven't.

I'm gonna be honest, I haven't played the Dishonored games though they do interest be, but those are bad looking menus. Persona 5 might be self indulgent UI porn but it's well made, so I'm going to assume that's why it gets recognition for it.

Yeah, I'm a fucking idiot.

Not sure how I didn't realize that before. Dishonoured is a first-person stealth game, and you'd only use the main pause menus often when quicksaving and loading on console. And as for the journals and whatnot, that's only when you need a refresher on certain missions, or want to change your bone charms.

As mentioned you use the P5 ones way more so they stand out. The biggest usage of Dishonored 2 you see is for reading the log entries which actually stood out to me as pretty drab, not showing the notes themselves and having pretty small text.

On console I remember the menus feeling a bit slow. For all of its over-the-top animation (which I love) Persona 5's menus still feel super responsive.

But also man, I wish people talked about/loved Dishonored 2 more in general. One of this gen's best.

You are in the menu plenty enough in Dishonored 2 upgrading/learning new arts and equipping bone charms and such. Personally Persona 5 is still king in this department, but D2 menus left a nice impression on me.

That also makes a lot of sense, since I played Dishonoured 2 on PC with an SSD. Whereas P5's menus feel fast even on PS3.

Persona has a tradition of stylish menus going back to at least 3. So it's something people expect and look for.

But really, the gifs you've presented as evidence for D2 are not at all persuasive that it's even close to the same level of graphic design.

Everytime people post gifs of P5's menus it makes me want to never ever touch that game.
Ugh, my eyes

For what it's worth, I haven't played D2, but those menu transitions aren't bad. P5's are just on a whole different level though, and it looks like Scramble is going to keep that going.

I just appreciate that people are adding flavor to menus. I think it's a good thing.

You're constantly looking at the UI in Persona 5. Not so much in Dishonored 2.

And I don't think the menus in Dishonored stand out nearly as much to begin with.

The Dishonored menus look fine but they really aren't anywhere close to the Persona ones.
