Has anyone from MK11 team actively spoken about their character designs? I can't help but be constantly impressed with how much their designs are kicking all kinds of ass, especially in a genre that tends to have some of the absolute worst designs. I'm just wondering if they are consciously trying to avoid shitty, over-sexualized designs.
I think it's obvious they are. Honestly though while I appreciate how they've moved away from over-sexualisation, I kind of dislike the overall art of Netherrealm's modern games. Everything looks too drab and elaborate for my tastes. I'd prefer the ninjas to look more like classic, basic ninjas and for there to be less scifi. The drabness and subdued sexualisation are what they've done to distinguish themselves from other fighters today, but I miss color and don't feel the latter relies on the former in any way, nor does MK in total rely on being so drab.

Yep.

Literally that one 'beast races - male vs female' image that gets thrown around every so often:

Also may as well repost this:

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Oh god, this brought to mind how the Majin race in DB Xenoverse was handled.

The female design is clearly meant to be "sexy" while the male design is meant to be "goofy". You can't have a fat Majin girl, nor a slim dude. It's just kind of limiting which really sucks.

Is Your Lie in April worth a watch? Noticed it's in Finnish Netflix. I know I've heard of it but I don't remember if it's good or bad. And anime geeks are hard to take seriously with what kind of shit they defend/ignore...

Does Path of Exile ever get talked about here? It's got some great women in it. Zana being one of the biggest badasses in the game. All the armor in the game is gender neutral too

I enjoyed it overall, though it does have a weird thing with the main character getting injured semi-accidentally as a running gag. It's been a while since I watched it so I might not be remembering something.

Yeah, PoE having all the armor gender neutral is great, probably one of the best examples in gaming. It also great that the MTX they sell is just regular stuff and do not fall to selling sexy armor and the like.

But, we only talk about this Zana now:

The gendered races in FF14 sucks...but I am reminded that it's always this way in fantasy...for shit reasons.

it seemed male gazy to me, what does the thread think?
It's really weird that Dora's attire is like...2 sizes too small.

Also Boots isn't wearing Boots, fuck everything about this.

Sekiro has some of the best female representation in a video game I've ever seen. Pretty much all of my favorite boss fights have been women and there are so many and they're SO FUCKING COOL. GAHHHHHHH.

Why can't every game be like this?

Yeah. The Okami warriors in particular are really cool.

I'm disappointed in the decision to introduce gender exclusive races in FFXIV. I hope that male viera and female hrothgar are introduced later. I don't think gender dimorphism is a good excuse at all.

Lady butterfly is genuinely one of the coolest bosses I've seen in gaming, from design to Moveset.

From what i can tell From Software is pretty good with female representation in their games.

I wish more Japanese studios would learn that from them.

Sekiro also has the ogre women as a monstrous design that was being complained about before.

From Software knows how to do female characters right, as usual o/
And Lady Butterfly is a treasure, I love old badass women!

What, is that true? I haven't seen ogre women yet, but seriously?
There were really people complaining about that? Why? A monster is a monster. It's not supposed to be sexy, it's supposed to be terrifying. What were they expecting?

I could never get used to the Souls games. I wish there was an easy mode, I like the aesthetic but it's too hard for me.

No one was complaining about them, atleast not that I've seen.

I just remarked on it since the FF14 conversation kicked up the "Male monsters = actual monsters but female monsters = normal women with cat ears" thing.

Lady Butterfly is amazing. From the design of the character herself, to the fight, to the location and lead up to it.

Quick loading also helps alleviate my millions of deaths to her...

Oh okay, sorry, seems I didn't understand your post lol

Ah, I saw these ogres, are they really female? I mean, I can see why, because of the hair and clothes.

I'm pretty sure. They seem to have breasts and they seem to have rounder, feminine faces to me, and the one I took a picture of, before you agro her is walking around weeping, and it certainly sounds to me like a female voice and seems to have a feminine hair style...

People who find that Dora outfit to be sexualized are creeping me out. There is literally nothing sexy about it at all.

A lot of the women monsters in the game are difficult to recognize but there are women and men monsters of most of the enemies I've seen so far. That said, there's nothing absurdly obvious about them because they're monsters and the distinguishing characteristics are slight (for the most part the only way I can tell is because they typically have different death cries). The boss women are more obvious because it actually tells you they're women (and there are quite a few).

Additionally, women and men monsters wear the same armor - which of course, makes sense.

These don't look female to me; the rounded faces and "breasts" seem to be about normal body fat for a male of that weight.

Still, what were exactly the complaints? I swear they will find any and everything to complain about.

They do a good job at teaching you how to play, but the process can be extremely frustrating and requires a lot of resolve

I remember dying in the first 15 minutes of bloodborne at least 50 times until the gameplay loop clicked with me, but after that it started to become easier. You just kinda need to hug every chamce you have of leveling up

Well, joy. SNK will continue to sexualize all of its great character designs for no real reason.
I prefer the original design too, but I guess the silver lining is that it's not that bad compared to what it could have been (ie what we're used to these days). This game doesn't look anywhere near as awful with its portrayal of female characters as most other Japanese fighting games this gen. Low bar, but still.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not her, you have Iroha SNK, leave Char alone ;_;
What?!? And not sexualized a woman!?! What a crazy idea! /s

No seriously, what happened to SNK? They used to have really good women character designs but lately its sexualization after sexualization to every character. At this point I'm just hoping that King in the next KoF doesn't have cleavage.

Sekiro actually has an old woman as a badass boss fight.
Talk about fucking rare in videogames.

I don't typically regard fencers as wearing heavy armor, so the new design makes more sense to me.
