It's not only about the ending. There is still a ton of stuff that was left unanswered, including the stuff that happened before the events of the game.
Sure, there's a lot to explore there, and I would like to see some of it. That said, I would prefer moving forward rather than a prequel.
I would also love to have some Nintendo Online functionality that makes me feel connected to a community and fandom as I'm playing the game. Even a live co-op companion mode would be amazing.

The main character should be Elma's co-pilot, who was originally going to be the protagonist of X before they decided to go the create-a-character pseudo MMO route.

I think they should double down on the custom character and multiplayer. Let the CC be more involved in the main story and give him/her a voice outside of battle. Like Shepard in Mass Effect.

We have the numbered titles if you want singel-player and a fixed main character. Let the X games be different in design.

More than a big sequel, I'd be happy with just an enhanced port with some system tweaks, and a big story/map/lore expansion aka more story chapters, new continents to explore, characters, enemies and so on.

MS said in one interview years ago that Takahashi wrote more lore for XCX than any of its other previous games which is crazy, some employee even suggested him to publish it as a novel. The fact that they had to choose between story/cutscenes and exploration/gameplay/Online component with the relative small budget they had while also learning/developing their first HD game really affected the scope of the game, plot wise. And I suspect that they thought that if the game (or Wii U as a system) were really successful, they could develop DLC chapters to upgrade the story.

Maybe that's the reason we didn't get many backstory/lore for the game since: they hope to continue the saga at some point. But also, Takahashi loves to try new things so who knows when they get the opportunity to do it (full-fledged sequel or expanded port).

At this point, I'd be happy with just an outsourced port supervised by Takahashi. XCX is the only game along with Mario Maker that holds me from packing my Wii U.

A sequel to the current high watermark of Xenoblade Games? I sure hope so. Really is a shame they went the direction they did after X. So many amazing features and themes ditched, to say nothing of the art/sound downgrade.

I'll buy as many versions of as many entries in the X franchise as they choose to release. I think our best bet for a sequel would be in the sweet spot of time where XC2 is largely off everyone's mind and pumped for all it's worth, but the studio's coffers are still full from those profits.

I loved the world of Mira in xenoblade X but I didn't really like the characters and so I'm okay if they never go back to finish the story set in X. BUT I would love a new Xenoblade game with the approach Xenoblade Chronicles X took, open world mecha beautiful landscape and amazing traversal. But this time more focus on story and new characters please
...

Elma was boring :p
Same here, took me forever to beat because of weird design choices and very robotic characters (heh).

The Skells were great though. I wouldn't mind more X but it would have to be done a lot better than the first X.

Pretty sure the second quote in the OP is related to the traditional fantasy game they're working on.

I'd be in for this. A sequel would be great, obviously.

Well, actually, Xenosaga 1-3 only covered what was supposed to only take 2 episodes. So if they continued at that pace it would have taken 6 episodes to complete.

The original plan was:
Episode 1 and 2: Xenosaga
Episode 3 and 4: Remake of Xenogears
Episode 5 and 6: After Xenogears

It's more like there are 4 Xeno universes that share themes and story beats:
Xenogears
Xenosaga
Xenoblade 1 and 2
Xenoblade X

The Xenoblade games are all like reimaginings of Xenogears and Xenosaga, taking the same concepts and story beats but changing them to have only a tangential relationship.

Like all of the games involve the Earth getting destroyed. All of them involve the lead female being artificial to some degree and having multiple personalities/identities. Zohar.

I guess so. I've never played Xenogears and Xenosaga. I should rectify that soon! I heard that even Baten Kaitos and Soma Bringer share certain elements with the Xenoblade games too, I don't know if that's the case.

It's really hard to say much about X because it's more like a prologue than an actual story, where as 1 and 2 each get as much done with their stories as Xenogears by itself and Xenosaga 1, 2, and 3 combined.

If they ever do make an X2, I would want it to be more narrative-focused like the other Xeno games. The main character should be Elma's co-pilot, who was originally going to be the protagonist of X before they decided to go the create-a-character pseudo MMO route. He's only mentioned in passing in X. Have the main hub be the other colony that crashed on Mira, New Tokyo, on another landmass.

That's a cool idea. I personally want Elma as the main character again, but I think they can find some interesting ways to implement her even with the co-pilot as the main character in a different setting. They can show Elma through flashbacks, which would be a nice way of fleshing out her character.

Sure, there's a lot to explore there, and I would like to see some of it. That said, I would prefer moving forward rather than a prequel.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a prequel. We could get an alternate dimension situation like what happened with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The co-pilot did disappear somehow, so we could see a continuation of the XCX universe. It would be sorta disappointing to not see the cast again, but even more disappointing if they don't continue the universe.

Pretty sure the second quote in the OP is related to the traditional fantasy game they're working on.

I'm assuming you meant the third quote? If so, I made this thread several months before we knew of the project's existence (the one by Takahashi). At the time I assumed that Takahashi and his team would transfer over to the new IP after development of Torna had wrapped up. That's clearly not the case anymore since they have two development teams: one is a brand new team making a new IP and the original team is making what's likely another Xenoblade game.

I would love love love a sequel to X on Switch, and I would also love to have X ported to Switch and have it be portable.

Legit my best game of 2016 (I played it nearly a year late).

We need X on switch first
I'm not trying to port beg, but just saying I would play X if it was on the Switch

Been debating on buying it on the WiiU but the game is so long and I normally dont play on the WiiU.... I know I could emulate it with the CEMU I guess after buying it... Now that's something I might do. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2 so naturally X has my eye on it. But the price tag is kinda high... Wish I got the game when it was on clearance at Target

I think X had an satisfying ending, it needs no sequel (but it could have a sequel obviously, the story could go on forever).

One of the best open world games ever made, even so it had some flaws (vocal music in cutscenes, small text, party change).

Nothing about the games story was satisfying, let alone the absence of conclusion. I really love this game but its the world design and not the story or the juvenile writing that makes it great. I wanted to stab my ears with pencils every time they cracked a joke about eating Tatsu. Also, really? A 12 year old in scantily clad clothing. Come on.

Left on way too many cliffhangers and they built up a big world with lots of lore. Plus the game is too good for it to be lost on Wii U forever, a port and a sequel please.
