Winter Olympics are all a blur of ice rinks and snow courses. Tragic like the unfinished Sochi restrooms.

I can recall most of the summer Olympics in my lifetime. Sydney and Greece and Beijing and London. Amazing tbh.

I even remember when Brazil made that weird claim to have invented powered flight which I guess hinges on if you think catapulted liftoff from air craft carriers and such disqualify the flight itself. If you feel that way then I guess you can say the Wright brothers were not first to powered flight despite their 39-minute trip by plane before Santos-Dumont ever showed his flight off.

I look forward to Tokyo because I frankly can’t remember much at all about winter olympians. I know that guy Gus Kenworthy but no one else.

The variety at summer olympics is amazing.

What’s the best Winter Olympic sport? It ain’t anything that involves sliding down mountains or ice skating.

Best winter sport is hockey. With or without the NHL, it's still the most fun thing to watch. Skeleton is pretty good too.

Curling is surprisingly fun to watch. It's such an oddly specific sport that it gets kind of fascinating and the tactics on display are fun.

And yes, Biathlon gets points for being a sport based on something you might do for real. Go fast on skis, then shoot something. It's basically winter hunting as a formalized sport.

Oh, and Ski Jumping. Ski jumpers are nuts, and that's all the more fun to watch.

Frankly Winter has more individual events that are interesting to me. Sure, Summer has more sports overall, but I'm not watching field hockey *shrug*

To me the Summer Olympics was always the default whereas the Winter Olympics is all the weird games people in cold climates play.

Most winter sports probably aren't accessible to some crazy percentage of population of the entire globe.

They both have their strengths. The comparatively open schedule of the winter olympics allow the viewer to focus more on individual events and athletes while the sheer breadth of the summer olympics shows you a bit of everything that human athleticism can accomplish. I guess I prefer the summer, but they're all good

Outside of Barcelona i don’t care that much for the summer games.
But the winter games? I absolutely love

i use to watch every minute of it as a child back in the 80’s and 90’s

Honestly, winter is more entertaining. I don't know how its even a contest.

Swimming/Track is boring as fuck.

Hockey rules.
Downhill winter stuff rules.

Curling is strangely captivating.

not sure what to think..... Winter Olympics are calm and captivating, almost all disciplines.

but also, most are weird as fuck and not practiced in the whole world.

who has a Skeleton/Bobsled slide available to practice???? no one. what countries have a professional curling sport team??? it's all weird.

Summer really feels like the major celebration of humanity. you have leading athletes from all continents.

Winter is better

Hockey
Moguls
Figure skating
Sledding

The only thing actually entertaining in summer is sprinting

Curling is super common, almost all indoor ice rinks I’ve been to in the west coast of the usa have curling leagues

Yeah. Even if you're in the right climate for it, a lot of those sports are insanely expensive to get into.

Curling is actually really hype once you know some of the tactics and scoring methods.

Living in Vancouver, I’ve always been biased to the Winter Olympics. Always enjoyed watching curling. Was in downtown Vancouver when the golden goal was scored, definitely a moment I won’t forget.

Snowboard and ski cross are hugely underated sports.

Summer still has the edge though. Except the rich people hobbies pentathlon and walking race, even more stupid than throwing yourself down a mountain headfirst on a tea tray.

Love the Winter Olympics but the Summer Olympics blow them out of the water and then some.

Most memorable winter sports; Longtrack Speedskating, sliding sports (bobsleigh, skeleton, luge), Figure Skating, Hockey.

Summer games; Track & Field, Gymnastics, Swimming, Martial Arts + Wrestling, Soccer, Basketball, Equestrian, Tennis, Handball, Volleyball, Rowing sports (canoe, kayak), Rugby, Indoor Cycling, Waterpolo.

It's not even close.

Not to mention that the Summer Games represent the diversity of humanity across racial, ethnic and religious lines.

The Winter Olympics aren't able to do that.

Obviously this is because of geographic limitations and the costs involved in participating in some of these sports but still, Winter Olympics are white dominated and don't appeal to me as much for that reason either.

Yeah with all the shit hockey has been getting recently it's nice to remember something that pretty much every Canadian across the board was watching live. That shit was amazing.

Also hockey and snowboarding are my favourite sports so I'm definitely more keen on the winter olympics, but I am excited to see how skateboarding fares when it becomes an Olympic event next go 'round.

Basketball and Futsal should be added to Winter Olympics. Hell, indoor volleyball too. They need more team sports.

Winter Olympics are the Olympics for rich white countries. Summer Olympics date back centuries and are accessible to people of every nation, especially poor ones. Hence the popularity.

The Summer Olympics definitely have the better atmosphere of global camaraderie and generally more interesting storylines or whatever. But I will take hockey, curling, and ski & snowboard cross over any summer sports.

The poll may be age dependent -- I'm 47 and my fondest Olympic memories are Winter-based -- Miracle on Ice, Eric Heiden, Bolero, heck even Nancy and Tonya. Saw all of that live (well, not Tonya whacking Nancy, but still remember that news breaking). Younger folks I'm sure had Phelps, the recent surge in U.S. Gymnastics, Bolt, etc. making an impression of Summer over Winter. Though I guess Shaun White was impressive on behalf of Winter lately.

Half of the OP is pure salt because of Santos Dumont.

I have never followed any Winter Olympic Games.

Literally every winter olympic sport bar figure skating and ice dancing is entertaining.

Biathlon is fun to do and fun to watch. Even the janky biathlon video games are fun.

And curling is the GOAT sport so

Winter Olympics have so much more fun events to watch.

Plus entire events based on very cold people trying to find amazing new ways to get themselves killed.
