The following is lifted from a thread I made in the Old Country early last year, with light edits.

### ### ###

It’'s fucking Donkey Kong,” they cried.

“It'’s fucking ART,” says I.

...although I imagine even the most vociferous haters of another DKC by Retro Studios were humbled, once they saw the magnificent artistry on display in Tropical Freeze. This is one handsomely crafted game. :-D

The detail per capita, so to speak, reminds me of Uncharted 4 (a game I’'ve been replaying lately), where each scene is practically bursting at the seams with one-of-a-kind art assets. Literally every level has environmental props that are unique unto itself —— imagery that makes each stage fun and memorable.

Also like Uncharted 4, the attention to detail is accompanied by bombastic spectacle, in the form of scripted moments that trigger as you progress through each course. The levels IMPLODE and EXPLODE all around you, reconfiguring their perils and pathways in dynamic fashion. Every other thing that DK sets foot on seems to crumble and collapse.

I suppose DK has the excuse of being an 800-pound gorilla, while Nathan Drake has ancient architecture to blame!

But seriously, some of these stages look delicious enough to eat:

I’d also like to appreciate the stellar soundtrack by music god David Wise. The following are some of my favorite tracks in the game… but there’s enough here to fill several car CDs (they see me rollin’… dongs expandin’):

Amiss Abyss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA2WjP6sgrc
Seashore War (EPIC): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Boqy0Q-4c_M

Big Top Bop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=301s-GDML5w
Punch Bowl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkxrXWokYqQ

The above list is hardly comprehensive… What are your favorite themes in the game?

Back to the art: Below is my collection of screens I took while playing Tropical Freeze, taken in 720p using the WiiU’s browser upload to abload.de (and then hosted at one of my myriad Flickr accounts). This collection was originally compiled for my own enjoyment, years ago, but recent talk of Tropical Freeze got me thinking people might like it if I shared.

Each screen has something that caught my eye, whether it’s the composition of elements in the background —— stands of pine cresting the hills; a tangle of vines framing the sky —— or individual touches like crumbling brickwork in a dilapidated factory, ice-glazed plants in a snowy forest, and so on.

Disclaimer: There is at least one screen that I’m not sure I took myself. Reason being it features Diddy by himself, and I generally don’t play that way. I wonder if I just liked the shot and saved it at the time? I ran an image search and I saw that GAF member Nocturnowl posted it at one point, so maybe it’s his?

(Also think there might be a couple screens by Chadboban in here: The shot in Amiss Abyss with the glowing fish, and/or the cheese shot?)

The others should be mine, though. I still remember painstakingly taking them with the WiiU’s browser. *shudders* Speaking of image capture, the Switch’s capture button would’'ve come in handy... And speaking of the Switch, can you imagine this game displayed on its vibrantly colorful screen? Similar to SNES Rainbow Road in MK8D, I think it’d melt minds. [MODERN-DAY EDIT: MIRACLES DO COME TRUE.]

At any rate, check out the screens below, and let’s appreciate the artistry of this fine game —— one of the best-playing, best-looking, and best-sounding 2D platformers ever made:

Open the quote windows below to see each set of three screenshots!

Oh, and a shoutout to the enemy design in this game. The Snowmads were top-notch additions to the DKC canon, more than making up for the lack of Kremlings.

I especially like Harold:

When you know who the Op is before clicking :D

Also, can you put a few of these in quotes maybe?
I couldn't scroll down to the post form because they just kept loading bit-by-bit due to how resetera loads images.

is this thread also a remaster? I feel like you created that one before, Neiteio.

But yes I agree. DKTF is a masterpiece in the sound and art direction. Thanks for so many great screenshots!

I really like the fur/hair effects in this game.

This game is not an easy game to make it through the campaign, much less collect everything. Funky Kong should help people, but it is still a wild ride!

David Wise is a masterclass composer, and probably one of the best, if not the best in the West for me. All his songs are just perfect.

One of my favorites from DKCTF is actually kind of an overlooked one since it plays underwater in a hard level. But it has such a surreal feeling to it that makes it so amazing.

Also like his Fear Factory adaptation for the Ice version of it.

Where did this info come from? Just curious. Wise was solely credited for "Music", with the others being credited for recording (Yamamoto was credited as a supervisor). I was under the impression that Wise actually composed all the tracks.

So happy this gets ported. I hope it will be a big success.
Such an incredible game man. Grassland Groove.. so goooooooood

Also the visuals and the vibe in general are freaking amazing
The harmony of level design, visuals, and music in Grassland Groove is incredible. Easily one of the best levels ever

Happy you have Seashore War in this list! It is my favorite tack in this game

This track is a groovy little number that's criminally overlooked...though to be fair it maybe plays for like 10 seconds in the game.

Its because wise is credited with the retro studios staff, nintendo staff is in a separeted session of the credits, they are credited as Music/Voice Recording because they handed both

If you listen to this, its really similar to some TF songs

Ugh I love this game so much. The stills are beautiful, but it looks so much better in motion. I'm particularly fond of the diving & swimming animations.

This is really interesting to me. Would you have a link to the site where you found the credits?

I put the gallery in quote tags. I wish the quote tags worked like the Old Country where you see them all at once, but I also added a note saying to open the quote to see them all. :-)

It just didn't click with me on WiiU. It felt like they based the gameplay on the PAL, 50Hz version of the SNES games. So syrupy and so many cheap deaths designed around slow input response.

I'll give it another try on Switch, because I love Kong too much not to.

You definitely have to account for DK's momentum. Really satisfying once it clicks, though. DK feels weighty and powerful.

I really hope the textures in this game remain the same as those of the Wii U version. I always thought the file size was pretty large for what the game was, but I do have to say that it looks really nice.

I really appreciated that aspect of his movement whenever it was intended to make you feel powerful.

The more finicky platform bits though... like trying to play piano using a sledgehammer. I like my platforming tight and snappy :)

It's a good idea to always roll jump. You can overshoot most jumps in the game, and DK's air control makes it easy to correct.

they are, look at the trailer/screens. the file size comes from the uncompressed prerendered opening/ending videos.

Cool cool! Now I'm just hoping that the price is good, I'd be down to get it again at $40 or even the original $50 (even though I got it for free from Club Nintendo) but I'd feel weird about buying a nearly 4 year old game for $10 more than it originally cost.

I just hope the load times are reduced.

Because that's the only thing I can think of that I don't absolutely adore about DKC:TF. It's a fantastic game that everyone should have the opportunity to play.

Following Moon's advice, I quoted my images in groups of three.

This contains the dong expansion nicely, methinks.

I wish this game was more appreciated. The only thing that kept me from completing it (as in "200% complete") was the WiiU. The loading times were atrocious and whenever I wanted to get back into the game, I got annoyed by the time it took to even enter the world map.
Thankfully, the Switch sleep mode will fix this. Now they only need to get it to run in 1080p and don't ask more than 50€ for it. Wish it would release earlier.

I like how at first glance (listen?) Aqueduct Assault is this kinda generic orchestral theme, but by the end of it you're all like "TIME TO SAVE THE ISLAND LET'S FUCKIN' GO"
