Box office threads traditionally go up on Sunday, but we were busy floating in the Discord aether for much of this past week. Since some of you are going to want to talk Thor 3 (Hi Toa Tak) international numbers when they start coming out tomorrow, I'm going to make a late thread to start us off.

This is barebones for now (A lot went on today!), but I will try to get some of the regular features into the OP that we typically have in these things.

Box Office: Tyler Perry's 'Boo 2!' Tops Downbeat Weekend With $21.7 Million

(click title for full article)

Tyler Perry has prevented a disaster at the box office with the opening of Lionsgate's comedy sequel "Boo 2! A Madea Halloween" scaring up a solid $21.7 million at 2,388 North American locations.

That was pretty much the limit of good news at the nation's multiplexes, where moviegoers gave limited support to a quartet of new arrivals — weather-disaster title "Geostorm," firefighter hero tale "Only the Brave," murder mystery "The Snowman" and faith-based drama "Same Kind of Different as Me."

...

Warner Bros.' "Geostorm," starring Gerard Butler, is finishing a distant second place with about $13.3 million at 3,246 venues — at the top end of modest forecasts but a major disappointment given the film's estimated $100 million budget, financed by Warner Bros. and Skydance Media. Movieigoers gave "Geostorm" a B- CinemaScore. The timing of the release, with hurricanes hitting hard in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico over the past two months, probably dampened enthusiam.

...

Universal's "The Snowman," finished far below forecasts with $3.5 million at 1,812 venues.

"The Snowman," centered on the hunt for a Norwegian serial killer, fell flat with audiences, who gave it a D CinesmaScore while critics panned the movie with a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

...

After a record-setting September that was dominated by "It," the first three weeks of October have generated a disappointing $430 million domestically — down 11.9% from a year ago and the lowest total for the same period since 2008, according to comScore.

Wish I'd been able to see Battle of the Sexes before it left theaters, but time's been short the past few weeks.

I know there's various reasons these things happen, from studio write-offs to being part of bigger deals, but I can't imagine how anyone green lite a budget of 120 million dollars for fucking Geostorm

It was delayed a year wasn't it? I could see a scenario where development began after 2012 rocked the Box Office and by the time the movie actually got out a. they realized it was bad and b. that Independence Day 2 movie bombed so they couldn't fall back on the disaster porn part of it.

Edit:
The pre-production began on July 7, 2014.[9] Dean Devlin would direct the science fiction action film for Warner Bros. with Gerard Butler attached to star as the lead,[10] and Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris and Andy García also starring.[11] On August 19, Alexandra Maria Lara joined the film's cast to play the commander of a space station and also Butler's character's love interest who helps him save the world.[12] On September 26, Katheryn Winnick was added to the cast to play Olivia, Butler's character's ex-wife and mother of Hannah.[13] On October 8, Eugenio Derbez was added to the cast of the film.[14]
With an initial budget of $82 million,
[15] principal photography began on October 20, 2014, in New Orleans, Louisiana,[16][17] and lasted through February 10, 2015.[17]Filming began on Loyola Avenue on the first day.[18] Some NASA scenes were filmed at NASA Facility in New Orleans in November 2014 and January 2015.[19][20]

After poor test screenings in December 2015, $15 million reshoots were conducted in Louisiana in early December 2016, under new producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis and director Danny Cannon. Winnick's role was recast with Julia Denton during reshoots, while new characters were added into the script.

Ha, I was waiting for this thread! Good to see it again.
Not much to say this week except I thought Battle of the Sexes was going to be a bigger deal.

That makes sense, but man still...

Thor is seeing a small drop from the second one in France so far. Also slightly below the first one. Nothing too alarming though.
I also just learned that Blade Runner was actually super successful around here back in 82. We're weird.

kswiston you have a million and a half things to do you really didn't need to set this up (but thank you for doing so).

I'm still on the Thor: Ragnarok making a billion train.

Even if I have to get it there myself it'll happen.

Snowman is actually the one I'm most curious about. It sounds like such a mess. Too bad for the director though, he's talented.
I'll still rent Geostorm at some point.

Wow that's kind of a dry fart of an opening for Only the Brave. Would need a 6x multiplier to match its budget domestically. Still in a better position than Snowman though. Yikes. I mentioned it on Discord, but what the hell happened there? Strong director, strong writers, strong actors, end result is a pile of crap.

Thanks for carrying this on kswis.

Man the marketing was pretty on point because it seemed like it was going to be a great/interesting little movie but was actually a horrendous mess, so glad I actually waited on it.

I added the worldwide chart to the OP. If I have some time, I will throw in the images for the top films, but we have all of the usual info until then.

I never really thought the effects in Geostorm looked good at all, the CG was noticeable, especially that plane falling from the sky.

Oh yeah we in here.

It was honestly kinda sad that we missed the weekend box office thread for the first time in a decade.

How is Geostorm? The trailer that played in my Happy Death Day screening looked interesting enough, I might check it out.

Oh I'm definitely disappointed in how Transformers have been doing. I enjoyed the first one quite a bit but the rest were just bloated eye candy fests that were... dull. No other word for them.

But I get why those films continue to make money. People pay money to see those special effects on screen as a way to escape. But me... I'll take Blade Runner 2049, Ex Machina, Carol, or Logan any day of the week.

Bad name and very awkward timing for release as there were massive fires in the West coast.

What we need is The Love Guru 2, obviously. Now that would save Paramount.

And Wayne's World 3 would probably end up being just as disappointing as Zoolander 2 or Dumb & Dumber 2.

You kind of inadvertently stumble across that underserved audience part I talked about:
I'll take Blade Runner 2049, Ex Machina, Carol, or Logan
All starring white people. It's the same reason why subpar LGBTQ themed films get releases (though those are more limited), there is an audience for them and that audience doesn't get catered to by Hollywood at large.
Same reason (or at minimum part of) the reason why Hidden Figures blew the fuck up, and why Girls Trip made so much money
