Lol at this narrative that RJ wasn't suited for the job, let the salt flow through you.

Imagine arguing that someone should be "at fault" for a movie achieving overwhelming critical success hitting 1.3B WW
I think people are just really bad at compartmentalizing their personal opinion of a movie away from more objective measures of its success.

Someone may have not liked TLJ but it was a critically acclaimed film and still made gobs of money for Disney.

I didn't care much for the remake of Lion King, and it didn't even review well, but it still grossed $1.65 billion dollars. I'm not about to say Jon Favreau is in any trouble with Disney.

I am starting to see this compartmentalism regarding Skyfall.

There isn't anything wrong with disliking that movie but claiming it hurt the franchise when in reality it was a massive success critically and financially.

I think it doesn't help when the current environment of algorithmicly delivered content makes it way too easy to end up in a fake news/conspiracy bubble where that movie that's supposedly doing gangbusters is actually a huge flop, that all the reviewers giving it high praise are actually paid shills, etc, etc.

The funny thing is when you point out facts, it always turns back into "you're just upset I didn't like the movie"

Jeremy Jahns has been peddling alt-right nonsense for years, people just didn't notice it till it became more blatant.

True, and while I categorize Randolph's motivations as purely in service of more views, she obviously has to feel comfortable peddling such nonsense in the first place. She has always spewed some subtle derogatory language towards other women in power and POC in the industry that might have been excused for a while.

Plenty of Star Wars and film YouTubers have suffered harassment and declined views because they didn't bend over to just please the increasing reactionary youtube algorithms. Although many have been rewarded for staying positive too.

It's okay to not like something.

People burping out the same reasons continuously for two years about not liking something, as if everyone else just doesn't get it is exhausting though. People aren't reacting to the opinions at this point. They're reacting to how boring it has become. Stop being boring!

Saw Knives Out yesterday and it was incredible. So happy it's doing well at the box office. I want more Benoit Blanc mysteries.

Why do we give these YouTubers the time of day? They're not really critics and mostly all hacks. Why do people here even bother posting shit from Angry Joe, Grace Rudolph, Jahns, etc.

They're not critics. They make clickbait for ad money on fucking YouTube. They only get legitimatized because for some reason we talk about them. Why?! Who cares what they have to say?

Because people on this site and off share them without critique and they get a lot views. They radicalize people into their shit.

Ignoring the trolls has never worked. You have to call shit out. You can't let it fester.

Then they should be banned sources on Era. Seriously. There are plenty of outlets banned on the gaming side (why Joe is not one of them and even gets his own threads is a huge fucking problem and I don't know why moderation allows it).

I didn't know Paddington had such a following. Guess I've been missing out, maybe I'll have to swap my 5th Aladdin viewing for it

Weird, I thought skyfall was generally loved? I always felt a bit out of place because I thought it was just ok. My problems with it aren't really the "this thing ruined the series" kind of thing either...

Huh.

I'm scratching my head at what could have ruined the series. I mean I thought that reintroducing the camp crap was going to rot it from the inside, but the terrible followup kind of killed it before that could happen.

But it's not like 007 hasn't gone through bad spells, I'm not sure what there was in Skyfall that could have ruined 007 overall for someone?

I was always under the impression that Skyfall actually rejuvenated interest in Bond after Quantum of Solace and was widely well-liked. (Though I consider Casino Royale to be the superior film.)

Uh yeah skyfall was definitely well received. Looked great, had bardem, the adele single, etc. Everything going for it.

Maybe the Skyfall hate died down since its release but I remember bitching about how they turned Bond into Home Alone and that its not the spirit of Bond.

There were plenty of real things to criticize in Skyfall like the step down in the gender politics from Quantum of Solace but people fixated on the 3rd act of Skyfall for dumb reasons.

Marketing for Jumanji in the UK feels muted, it doesn't help the main trailer we have over here weirdly cuts out the big twist that it's new people stuck in the game characters this time. Your only clue on what's happening is it ending with Dwayne saying "Who is Jumanji?" at the end.

Haven't seen the final trailer in cinemas yet, maybe that sorts the issue out. Still tracking for a $50m opening from what I seen.

Cats tracking for a $16m opening, that one is banking on Greatest Showman legs and being the musical everyone wants to see this year. But I feel Frozen II has that slot booked.

Skyfall was well received, yes. Only the smart minority realizes QoS is much better.

I liked the last bit at the mansion because it let Judi Dench actually act for the first time in a Bond flick and not just sigh when James blows up an embassy or something. It was a fun take on the well-worn "superspy goes old school" trope (see: Hobbs vs. Shaw).
Checked the numbers, Skyfall grossed twice what Quantum of Solace did, both domestic and worldwide ($168m vs $304m, $586m vs $1.1b).

I think people liked it.
Skyfall nearly grossed more than the prior two Bond movies combined. It was a legit phenomenon.

First off, whoever hasn't watched the Paddington movies should fix that mistake immediately.

As for Skyfall, I think the appeal was that the movie managed to marry both classic and modern Bond in a way no other modern movie was able to (note that a lot of people believe that's what makes Casino Royale better, but I disgress). It also helps that QoS and aspectre weren't that good to begin with. In fact, Spectre leaned so much into classic Bond that some people pointed out it took plot points from Austin Powers.

Casino Royale : Classic
QoS: Underrated banger. Lean, mean, interesting in a way Bond hasn't been
Skyfall: Pretty to look at but all-time most boring villain plot and awkward nostalgia grabs
Spectre: Crap

Feel confident No Time To Die will be at least watchable. And people have probably forgot the bad taste of Spectre (the upside of the silly delays) and I imagine it will continue to give Bond big box office numbers.

I'd be interested in re-examining QoS; at the time, in the wake of Casino Royale which was all-time great, it just felt a little flat.

Spectre's Mexico City opening is one of the best Bond setpieces ever, but it's all downhill from there. Bond movies don't need some grand overarching plot connecting the films together. And the ending looks even worse in retrospect because it was clearly written when Craig had declared it would be his last Bond flick.
