Don’t mention this to everyone writing it off and/or rooting against it because 2 dozen Alt Righters tried to use it as a prop against Captain Marvel. It must burn now! It’s born sexy yesterday (lol) it’s anti feminist!
We were discussing this in last week’s thread, on how the marketing didn’t help Alita because it actually did seem like a BSY movie, when both it and it’s source material isn’t (even if it plays a bit with that trope). Real shame, although that’s probably why all those right wingers and CM haters latched on to it, even if they hadn’t seen it.

I swear this forum needs a FAQ or glossary. What does BSY movie mean?

"A life form has just come into being, and is highly intelligent or physically skilled, but is a little less knowledgeable about common place things, like what a faucet is or how men and women interact. This being has the body of a fully-grown adult (almost Always Female), but little to no personal history. The hero, a typical down on his luck, fairly ordinary man, escorts this new being around, showing her the wonders of modern society and protecting her from those who would take advantage of her innocence. While not required, it is not uncommon for the woman to appear innocently naked, being unaware of the social taboos or other implications of that action."

This video covers it pretty well.

You'd think they'd be pushing "the real Captain Marvel" coming out next month but... They're idiots.
They already started that, it's just flew under the radar since obviously their desperate attempt at actually effecting Captain Marvel's box office and perception now is to pit it against a movie that is out now and one they can leverage fans of and the dialog around against CM.

Here is Zackary Levi addressing growing narrative trying to rope Shazam into a controversy pitting the movie against Captain Marvel.

Honestly, I think there is a good chance they are going to try to ramp up the rhetoric the closer to Shazam's release it gets, but it probably won't do shit to Captain Marvel's box office (nor do I see it having an effect on Shazam, positive or negative) besides tainting the discussion around both movies bit.

The thing that won't help matters is that WB/New Line is leaning into the rivalry of the two movies by pitting the marketing of Shazam against Captain Marvel with the release date as well as their drops of the trailer and social media embargo when Captain Marvel's review embargo and movie release happened respectively.

I agree :(

I haven't seen Alita myself, and to be honest I think I'd tend to avoid the film simply because my perception is that she's been marketed as waifu material. It does sound like a decent film, though, and if the Captain Marvel hate campaign results in a few more tickets for another inspiring story of female empowerment then I don't think that would be a bad outcome.
She’s not waifu bait, don’t worry.

That’s also apart of what’s funny with a minuscule amount of people who identify as alt right using it as a prop: if you were to pit it and Captain marvel against one another, Alita is arguably the more progressive of the two.

Which sort of indicates that the 8-10 alt righters who tried to start this... didn’t watch Alita either. :(

Maybe they should try to go back to ‘Black Panther is alt right’ as a tactic, both seemed like spectacular failures, but maybe that one actually warded some people away (or convinced some shit goblins to see Black Panther ;))

Oh my God, is the male figure in this case supposed to be Hugo?

Fucking Hugo?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I haven’t seen the movie, so I don’t know if they have made any substantial changes to his story, but lol.

Alita is a good time at the movies. It's more comic-booky than most superhero movies. It's as deep as a puddle though. Not that CM is deep, but there's more to the themes and characters than there is in Alita.

In a sane world, geeks everywhere would celebrate the fact that we get so many movies catering to our tastes, rather than go on internet tirades.

There is that weird moment where Alita gets installed in a body that then changes itself to have bigger boobs and her dad analog Christoph Waltz actually comments on that. It’s kinda uncomfortable.
In the source material, Ido merely sets the Berserker body from male to female setting before connecting it to her head.

At least as far as I remember.

Only if ScarJo is in itt.
ScarJo as Vegeta.

Book it.

Alt-right trolls using Alita to propel their agenda/narrative makes me super mad.

I mean it doesn't even make any sense because in terms of its themes, Alita is very similar to Captain Marvel. Hell, if this was about sticking it to Disney it doesn't make sense either because in just a couple of months Alita money will be Disney money.

I'm afraid they'll try a similar stunt with Shazam in a couple of weeks. *sigh*

Huh? I’ve seen the movie twice now and never noticed such a scene
I remember the scene but didn’t find it uncomfortable. Maybe I’m misquoting but I think the dad says something along the lines of” you’re not as young as we previously thought and the new body is just reflecting that.”

The only uncomfortable scene for me in Alita was the “I’ll give you my heart” moment.

I want a Dragon Ball movie with Jackie Chan as Roshi and Jet Li as Shen the crane master

and then time travel and bring 2008 Brandon Soo Hoo from Tropic Thunder to the present and cast him as kid Goku

Yes, I've thought about this too much

Original poster makes it sound like he actually commented on her breasts and as JB I was like "huh?!" Now I do remember it.

That scene was much better in the source material (and even then anime, which the movie borrows much from.)

Judging by his post history a bigot. Dude is all other the Star Wars stuff then basically trying to make a big drop in China a huge deal against Captain Marvel. Shit is easy to spot after they reveal themselves.

China has always always been unpredictable in the box office. Just fucking tired of seeing the stupid shit like this rear it’s head around here.

I wonder, would a competently made Saiyan Saga DBZ movie birth a massive movie franchise?
I kinda feel like the beginning of the Broly movie is a good template for a live action Dragon Ball. Show the destruction of Planet Vegeta, Goku gets sent to Earth, and then you do maybe a Spider-Man 2-esque quick montage of important story moments from Dragon Ball (Goku meeting Bulma, Goku going Oozaru for the first time, Piccolo vs Goku at the tournament), all leading to the present day at Kame House with Goku and Gohan visiting their friends.

From there you loosely adapt the Saiyan Saga. Raditz kills Goku, Goku trains in the afterlife while Nappa fights the good guys on Earth, Goku returns to take out Nappa and fight Vegeta as the climax. Post credits scene with Freeza.

The “I’ll give you my heart” scene was uncomfortable but intentionally so. Literally the next second Alita calls herself out for being too impulsive and over the top, and Hugo kinda awkward laughs it off.

The Boob growing scene is awkward because her father figure makes specific reference to her age, and not something neutral like “The body is adjusting to fit your image of yourself” or whatever.

Is anything Seeya saying wrong?

This is more or less how I imagine it, but I wonder how the pacing would work if you alotted as much time to the Saiyan backstory as Broly did. I guess they could give it as much screentime as Man of Steel did to Krypton.

This "I'll give you my heart" scene is another moment I don't remember from the source material.

The closest I can think of are when
Alita connects Hugo's disembodied head to her life support systems to keep him alive while faking his death.

And her wagering her heart as a sign of resolve later in the story.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but it's kinda relieving to hear that the moments people point out as problematic in the film are from the adaptation itself.

Read through his other posts in this thread alone. He isn’t just posting which by the way the guy he posted has nothing about the drop for CM on Monday from what I can see. He does it snidely basically saying look at this shit movie drop.

It’s one thing to say here are the drops on Mon. For China’s BO. It’s another to wonky face and mock the film’s tag line because he is gleeful it dropped (still waiting for a better source to even confirm)

I agree it's an odd source (though Gavin is good people) since doesn't mention Captain Marvel, but accordingly it did drop almost 70% on Monday according to BOT

I'm curious is all because I see Seeya in the box office threads all the time so posting updates isn't out of the norm for them.

Agreed completely but just read the tone. Hell go back a couple of pages and once again smirking and mention how bad of a drop CM had on Sunday. That shit is a pattern for a clear reason.

I don’t know why it took Captain Marvel to make people act like this but it just becomes annoying as hell to see it everywhere

I can't speak to the poster, but there are reasons why Captain Marvel is not playing as well as Aquaman/Venom/Transformers. Apparently, according to people who follow Chinese Box Office, The audiences there like big action spectacles. BUT CM is playing great in most of the other foreign markets, and if the Monday estimate holds true, looks to have a good/respectable Monday heading into the rest of the week

Of course. But who could make it?
Disney now,

If I were i producer in holly wood that is working on a sayian saga movie, I would have evrey main cast member that is human or sayian cast with an Asian actor

If this film is succesful do 3 films for the latter 3 arcs of z

And do a tv series adaption of original dragon ball for either Disney plus or Hulu

3 seasons

1 season covering a saga and then a tournament arc

So pilaf and Jackie Chun
Second season red ribbon then tien

Final season piccolo, then piccolo jr

If all of this is succesful then adapt stuff from super to film until eternity idk or it crashes

CM is performing better than every Marvel origin films released in that market - that’s quite a feat. However the film not maintaining any momentum there is because honestly, CM isn’t that good to begin with. Bumblebee isn’t big on spectacle either but managed to have a multiple of 3.

Side note, Green Book is having a stellar run in China and might reach domestic cume there. That’s outstanding.

I meant who could produce and direct? I don't know of anyone I'd really trust. It's just not like any other Hollywood franchise because it's both a martial arts flick (which Hollywood historically sucks at) as well as fantasy. Maybe the Wachowskis in their heyday could have done it but probably not anymore.

Maybe Ang Lee could do it...

10.9 for Monday is a steeper drop the Hunger games on its first Monday which was also a March release while school was in session. Also way under BvS first Monday even with a bigger Sunday. Not seeing how that is a super impressive Monday. Seems bad to me.

Maybe you should prove your asinine accusations or be banned yourself.

Do you want to see the blatant cheerleading I’ve done for Black Panther in the past? My outright love of that film? Or the fact the majority of posts I make in comics hangout has been to defend Carol Danvers (and proclaim my excitement for her film while, excitedly, talking about what they ought do in translating her to the big screen?) in the comics hangout? How about where I say in the StarWars discussions (while also talking about BO indicators and or my issues with the ST) how I prefer the base character of Rey over Luke fucking Skywalker.

How does any of that fit into your half wit narrative? Or the fact that as soon as Sunday’s drop came about, I made clear that the reason probably had more to do with the tepid action than other qualities that could be construed as convenient to alt righters?

Would you like receipts to every single thing I’ve just said?

The reason I linked GreenBooks results is because it is also the biggest news in China BO at the moment. Gavin, by the by, is considered rock solid and one of BoTs top posters at that. He’s probably the best source on English speaking twitter for the Chinese BO.

Pro tip: In the future, if you’re going to make such an embarrassing, and transparently desperate ‘in group’ post and subsequently call for the banning of a poster, put in a smidgen more effort into making sure that the person you are attempting to tar and feather for what you think they are isn’t just your reaction or account of being paranoid and irrational and if you should even be acting this way in the first place. Then to justify your ignorance and the potential damage it may cause as ‘it just annoys me’?

And thankyou, but no, I don’t accept your apology.

And next time read the room, and learn what a :[ smiley likely means, Jesus.

The last teaser was so negatively received that if this new trailer doesn't knock it out of the park I expect this to be another Mary Poppins styled flop, despite Aladdin still being fondly regarded.
Nah it won’t flop like that. For starters, those who were kids when the animated film came out are in their late 20s and early 30s, and many of them have their own kids that they will take to go see it. Mary Poppins is so old, the parents of many of the people who were kids when Aladdin released, weren’t even born yet.

Now how much of a success it will be, may be be impacted by how well it’s reviewed. If it’s critically panned, it will be interesting to see if the Disney dream machine can will Guy Ritchie trash to box office gold. Then again the reverse has happened in the last few years; critically successful live action Disney films flopping at the box office (Pete’s Dragon and the BFG). But neither one had the name recognition as the animated Aladdin has.
