'Infinity War' Is Now Second-Fastest To Half Billion; 'Life Of The Party' No Pizzazz With $18M+

20th Century Fox's Deadpool 2 has slowed, but not in the worst way. While many predicted yesterday morning a weekend north of $130M for the sequel, Saturday turned out to be not so high coming in at $40.5M instead of the $45M+ that many were seeing and that puts the sequel's weekend estimates at $125M per Fox (some see it lower at $122M-$123M). What Deadpool 2 doesn't have that Deadpool had is a Sunday on a four-day holiday, a lovers' weekend no less, and that did wonders to keep numbers high. At this level, Deadpool 2 is the second highest R-Rated opening after Deadpool ($132.4M) and ahead of It ($123.4M). It's also the second-best opening ever for a Fox movie after Deadpool.

Should the argument be made that most superhero sequels come in ahead of their first installment, Deadpool 2 is different kind of movie. While Disney's MCU touches on lore, Deadpool 2 plays it for its big splash of hilarity, satire and ultraviolence. Exit demos according to Fox: 61% male to 39% female, 62% over 25, with ticket buyers comprised of 50% Caucasian, 20% Hispanic, 13% African American, 13% Asian and 4% other.

Deadpool 2 took in $11.5m at 408 Imax screens in North America, and reps the second biggest domestic opening ever for an R-rated and Fox title, with a big per screen average of $28K+. Fox reports that Deadpool 2 played fairly balanced across the U.S. and Canada with the west over-indexing, the Midwest and south central slightly over-indexing and the Northeast and Southeast slightly under-indexing. Top theaters were located in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Orlando, Montreal, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and Oklahoma City. Canada repped 7.3% of the weekend with 1,079 premium screens (PLF=673 + IMAX= 406) fueling close to a quarter of the weekend's B.O.

Paramount's Book Club is coming in at $12.5M which is better than its $9M-$10M tracking and ahead of other elder-skewing titles like Warner Bros.' Going in Style ($11.9M) and Broad Green's A Walk in the Woods ($8.2M). We were getting word on Thursday that advance ticket sales were pushing this pic's opening into the teens, but the royal wedding's plays throughout yesterday was a factor. There's a chance we could more improved numbers today, but a good start for this Paramount title that the studio acquired U.S./UK/France rights on for $10M. Per Paramount: 80% of the audience was female, 88% of the audience was over 35, 60% over 50, and nearly 50% women over 50.

Global Road's Show Dogs saw a 94% increase in Saturday and will call the weekend this morning at $6M.

Well that's just a cruel title.
The long-awaited sequel to Old Boy has also been cancelled. Way to twist the knife.

I'm honestly surprised by the more modest DP2 opening. Did the tracking have the opening weekend coming below the original?

Damn BP didn't hit a million this weekend.

Deadpool 2 still making bank but I am surprised it made less than the first although not by much.

The first did have a holiday weekend and no competition however so I guess it does make sense.

Not all is bad news for Deadpool 2. It's doing fine overseas:

Seriously tho: Deadpool 2 is brilliant when it comes to being a fresh take on the superhero genre. I'd argue that it's hands down the best X-MEN film to date as well, topping Deadpool 1 and yes, Logan as well. I'm honestly hoping that at very least it gets a decent multiplier from here and out.

The release of IW likely had no impact at all on DP2, and Solo coming out is not going to stop its target audience from seeing it. People are seriously not going "Yea lets not go see DP2, I'll wait for Solo". Nonsense.

These are conversations that I've had at least three times with three different groups over the last month. Not everyone has unlimited time/money. I can tell you that I might have seen Solo in theatres if Deadpool 2 wasn't also coming out. He'll, my propensity to see Deadpool 2 in theatres is less because I just saw Infinity War and a quiet place. This is why distributors don't like to crowd release schedules.

If what you were suggesting was true then BP wouldn't have bumped from Infinity War, positive and negative synergy based on proximity do impact films. If Deadpool 2 didn't come out now then Infinity War would have had a better weekend.

Weren'T people expecting a lot more from Deadpool 2? I was under the impression many saw it in the 150m ballpark

Yes Deadpool 2 is underperforming domestically next to expectations. Infinity War is hurting it by grossing 30m and taking up screens, and Solo will further crowd things coming up.

Deadpool 2 has the 2nd highest opening weekend for a R-rated film and made more than it's production budget all at once. Very nice.

Brolin just did the WTF podcast with Maron and he said he LOVED playing Thanos and would do it again in a second. He then said Deadpool 2 was way more difficult. Sounded like he didn't really enjoy the experience other than working with Ryan Reynolds.

Brolin's experience has clearly translated to box office numbers. Also, Cable sucks anyway.

I also feel like there's no correlation between solo and Deadpool 2. Actually feel like hardcore fans of Deadpool would make fun of people for watching solo lol

So sayeth Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, the first bit of official prerelease tracking is out for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Let me throw in the all-important caveats that A) tracking guestimates are not an exact science and B) the opening weekend can trend up or down based on one variable or another over the next three weeks. With that said, we may be looking at a $160 million-$170 million Fri-Mon Memorial Day weekend. That would be the second-biggest Memorial Day weekend launch, sans inflation or 3D bumps. It would top the $153 million Fri-Mon debut (counting Thursday previews) of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End back in 2007.

If you want to adjust for inflation, a $160 million+ Fri-Mon launch would be the fifth-biggest Memorial Day weekend debut behind Pirates 3 ($156m in 2007/$204m adjusted), The Lost World ($92m in 1997/$180m adjusted), X-Men: The Last Stand ($122m in 2006/$172m adjusted) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($125m in 2006/$162m adjusted).

People on BOT are laughing at this Mendelson / Deadline article thinking Solo has no chance of coming close to this. Some are predicting under $100m 3-day for a $115m 4-day weekend. I call it bollocks. It's a Star Wars film. It will behave like a Star Wars film, and people will be "surprised". While I think that this prediction is actually still pretty possible, I'm going a tad bit more conservative: $145-150m 4-day weekend.

More proof that Sony is a better distributor than A24.
