Left and right are not a meaningful framework to apply to someone who created his own mercenary nation with a giant robot to threaten the word order.

He was President of Zanzibar Land. I don't think we have any canonical information on Zanzibar Land's relationship with businesses, their tax code, how involved government was in protecting civil liberties, what their health care and education systems were like, and so on. Left-right concerns these issues, but Big Boss doesn't seem to care about any of that.

So what did he care about? As President he did lead his country to raid nearby nuclear silos, steal a new species of algae that could be used as source of cheap energy (OILIX) not to offer cheap power to his own people but instead to screw over everyone else, and raise a bunch of child soldiers, intending to make countless more orphans out of his wars that could become soldiers in future battles resulting in a world of never-ending conflict with him in the middle of it all, so...he's a fascist jerk.

Both political leanings in the West go to South America and Africa to mess up their shit and murder the local populace, so Big Boss could be both.

Funny you bring this up.

Was just thinking about something like this while playing MGS V.

The MGS universe as a whole is wild anyway. BB might be the most sane thing in it.

Neither enemy, nor friend.

He is either, he is an idialist with ultimately good intentions but not the best ways to achieve it, he is against nuclear weaponry and against kid soldiers.
Did you played MG2? Zanzibar Land is filled with children which BB was training to fight wars.

He's libertarian. No government or oversight, free to take on your own jobs as you please, free to set your own destiny, and so on. He just dresses it up with a bunch of "No nation, no philosophy, no ideology" rhetoric which is decidedly untrue since the entire point of Outer Heaven is the ideology that soldiers should have a place all of their own to take on whatever conflict they please. They also have territorial waters, are very protective of what a "diamond dog is", and so on. As Superbunnyhop put it, he's created a place where "The nation is the army".

Ah yes, the man who turned his back on Capitalism... by becoming a wet work mercenary for hire who exploits 3rd world countries and their civil wars and conflicts to propagate that philosophy to others in order to create his own nation state of Mercenaries for hire.

He's a capitalist with a gimmick.

His ideology was that of "Outer Heaven" he wanted to create a society where soldiers are always needed and always have a place away from government abuse. Many might describe him as a communist/anarchist (but i don't really think he cared about any form of economic liberation)

but some might call him a right winger in the sense that he is a militant, tyrant/authoritarian.

where on the spectrum would you put him?

Did you not understand the entire point of Metal Gear V and oddly enough Metal Gear Rising?

He's not left-wing or right-wing. The entire point to his character was he won't associate with someone else's ideology and instead create his own.

Basically outer-wing, or, you could possibly say, an outer heaven.

Metal Gear Rising rehashes this message but makes it more explicit and upfront.

"We have no nation, no philosophy, no ideology. We go where we're needed, fighting not for country, not for government, but for ourselves. We need no reason to fight. We fight because we are needed. We will be the deterrent for those with no other recourse. We are soldiers without borders, our purpose defined by the era we live in."

He is a warmongler with patriotic views, he is the ultimate good guy turned into an evil merc with an agenda.

He is either, he is an idialist with ultimately good intentions but not the best ways to achieve it, he is against nuclear weaponry and against kid soldiers.

He is not in a civilian spectrum of political views.
I'm about 100% sure that Big Boss is totally for child soldiers. Some other people he knows on the other hand...

I agree with the people who think that he is kinda apolitical if that's possible.

He isn't a republican, that's for certain. He's a nice loving guy.

That said, he doesn't subscribe to an ideology. Just looking for a place for himself and people like him.

Authoritarian/tyrant can be left wing or right wing. Although, it seems BB has kind of created his own thing.

After the end of World War II, the world was split into two -- right and left. This marked the beginning of the voter called Big Boss.

I'd say he is like Fidel Castro. Kind of believes in communist authoritarian rule but does it for the best of humanity. He cares for wildlife, children of different races and backgrounds, and loves hording nuclear weapons.

It's not easy to just call him a leftist or right wing person in this current state where people have different notions of what each means. Currently the left are seen as snowflakes sjws whatever that means. The right is seen as money driven, communist suppporters, who are overly attached to the bible. Don't think we can define snake as either.

Well, he had good intentions but he could never be good as a ruler. It's fine when you basically have your own merc base and everyone there is a volunteer troop, but when you try to apply it to an actual country/nation like he wanted, it's clear civilians would never have a good time with those priorities of his. He's all about his squad really, nothing more, any semblance of politics is just what he was forced into by the world affairs in order to keep his fantasy land. On the other hand, at least until MGSV, he's seen to be all about protecting the innocents and not wanting civilians to be affected by his doings and what not, who knows when exactly that changed. Had he lived in ancient times where he could build an effective completely self sustained army nation rather than need to purchase supplies, gear and vehicles from the rest of the world, he'd be a lot better off, having a Spartan like society built.

He may believed whatever he wanted (oh my god, i am talking for a fictional character like he is a living one) but the fact is that he used the tricks of real world politics to achieve what he wanted. And those tricks are beyond right wing, almost fascist.
And the whole peace walker irony is superb. Man creates and operates what he hates without even understanding it.

You're right, that's the whole point. He fucked up. At most you might consider him apolitical but his actions were political. He was the useful idiot of every fascist regime out there.

He tries to fight for justice when he can, but the fact that he wants to take over with a militaristic society makes him pretty fuggin' right-wing in that regard.

Good post and good opening statement that left versus right is so diminutive that honestly people who keep using that as defining political viewpoints is a little troubling

Big Boss is a video game character and not a real person so American politics mean nothing to him.

But he is a left eyer.
