If GameFreak is planning something like

2019: Gen 8
2020: Sinnoh Remake
2021: Let's Go! Johto

2022: Gen 9
2023: Unova remake
2024: Let's Go! Hoenn

etc.

Would you love or hate it?

Honestly I would prefer they spend more time developing the new gen titles, but seems unlikely.

No. The franchise releases new games frequently as is.

Apart from the occasional gap year, it kind of already is, and I guess that's working out for them, so...

Christ no

I mean, I don't want the "mainline games" to be annual. They can do spin-offs as much as they want, sure.

If this involved separate teams doing staggered release cycles...sure why not? I want the Let's Go remake of Red and Blue, but Gold and Silver wouldn't appeal to me the same way so I'd probably opt out.

Pokemon has been quietly annualized since the DS era (and you could make a case for even earlier than that). 2015 was the first year in a good long while there wasn't a new Pokemon release.

It effectively already is, since gen 8 will make four years in a row with a mainline title.

I think the series would benefit from either time off or making some entries much more substantially different than others.

With two different series, maybe 3 (due to HD towns, which, you know, are hard)... YES!

God no. That would be awful. Can't imagine what kind of hellish waking nightmare it would be for there to be a new Pokemon game released every calendar year. Thank God there was only 9 in the last 10 years.

This. If anything they need to give them more years apart, but Gamefreak (or TPCi) are going to do whatever they want, game quality be damned

It's funny that there are people going "No!" when:

2019: Gen 8 (assuming not delayed)
2018: Let's Go
2017: Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
2016: Sun & Moon
---
2014: Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
2013: X & Y
2012: Black 2 & White 2
2011: Black & White (2010 JP)
2010: HeartGold & SoulSilver
2009: Platinum
2008: Diamond & Pearl

and so on. lol

No, please don't. Even tho it's almost annual at this point.
It barely brings something new to the table now, imagine it being annual.
I think it needs a reformulation. Glad to see Lets go at least trying something different.

It's already a yearly franchise, not sure how that will affect the series output and sales in the long run but with Let's Go existing. Game Freak can easily switch between the two.

2009: Platinum
2010: Heart Gold/Soul Silver
2011: Black/White

That 2015 gap stings, "Pokémon Z" could have totally fitted into that gap. Alas it wasn't to be.

Its actually:
2008 Platinum
2009 HGSS
2010 Black and White
2011
2012 B2W2
2013 XY
2014 ORAS
2015
2016 Sun and Moon
2017 USUM
2018 Lets Go! Pikachu/Eevee
Localization messed this up a bit, but the Japanese releases were always the metric for their break years.

Pokemon isn't entirely annual and it never will be. We will likely see the return of 4 year generations with the advent of HD development. 2020 will definitely be a break year, and after that I assume 2024 after the first Gen 9 game. Basically:
2019 Gen 8
2020 BREAK
2021 Sinnoh Remakes
2022 Lets Go! Johto/Wildcardbitches.gif
2023 Gen 9
2024 BREAK
Gamefreak has been working with a 3 game in 2 year time span for over a decade, and there is nothing wrong with it so far. Only with Lets go! and gen 9 did they shake things up, and that was mostly for experimental/economic reasons.

England
2015 had Pokkén Tournament, which while not a mainline game, is still part of the "franchise".

I mean as long as they can keep up the quality I don't see why not although that's not been the case the past few entries in my opinion.

It's virtually an annual franchise as it is. Did you even look at how often they have been releasing titles for the past decade?

2020 will almost certainly be the Gen 4 remakes, not a break year. 2021 may be that.

The current way it's set up is fine with me, about 3 years with games and a break.

For regular mainline games, no. They should take their time with those like they used to.

But if they want to use Let's Go style games as filler for gap years with no regular mainline game, fine.

Why do they even need filler though? This isn't a struggling company or franchise. Other developers with way less popular IPs somehow survive with way less frequent releases

It's already pretty much an annual series. I would like if they slowed down the main releases and did yearly stuff with spinoffs. Either new spinoffs or crossovers or established ones like mystery dungeon, rumble etc.

Yeah I do fear main games being annual means spin-offs aren't as big.
