The Lord of Cereal I've read your post and even if I don't agree with it - I still feel Microsoft should have carried the studios through at least one full project - I understand your reasoning.

I just feel a bit drained, so don't want to do a long post responding. Arkane (both teams) is one of my favorite studios of all time and seeing AA so unceremoniously thrown aside makes me sad.

Who knows what could have happened to BGS Austin too with these clowns if there wasn't the Fallout TV show.

Bethesda is trapped in this mess.

Chances of that game releasing are minimal if that's the case. MS clearly doesn't have time for these long dev cycle, low potential ROI games anymore now that they're just doubling down on being ATVI.

Really thought they could put together an "ecosystem" / dev pipeline that supported a wide range of games and experiences, seems like that's simply not the case anymore.

The way Grubb is talking about it (still watching Giantbomb) these studios don't have GP as a safety blanket, they have to make money.

Just loaded up an old Prey save to reminisce.

At least the studios and developers will live on and be remembered in the art they made.

If I was at The Initiative and Ninja Theory I would genuinely be getting ready to move.

PD having issues after all this time and let's be honest Hellblade 2 can be a 10/10 GOTY but won't do blockbuster numbers..I am really hoping everyone lands on their feet..but man am I getting fuckin tired of saying that over and over and at studios that DELIVER

Not surprised about Perfect Dark. The way The Initiative was set up seemed dumb from the get go. I don't envy Crystal Dynamics.

Hopefully even more stuff comes out. I'm ready to hear just how woefully mismanaged the Xbox division truly is.

Isn't Perfect Dark essentially being made by Crystal Dynamics? Like how many people are even at the Initiative anymore?

Okay, so I've removed some Xbox backlog games. Tried to whittle it down as much as possible. And I've added Switch games to my backlog. I'll play those games starting 2025 when Switch 2 comes out:

Xbox backlog:

  1. Apollo Justice collection
  2. Death's door
  3. Entropy centre
  4. Guacamelee 2
  5. Master detective archives: rain code
  6. Nier replicant
  7. Opus: echo of starsong
  8. Outer workds
  9. Sea of stars
  10. Star Wars Jedi survivor
  11. Talos principle 2
  12. Titanfall 2
  13. Unicorn overlord
  14. Witcher 3
  15. Wolfenstein 2

Switch 2 backlog:

  1. 13 sentinels
  2. Great ace attorney chornicles
  3. All Layton games that exist on switch (I think there's 3?)
  4. LOZ: breath of the wild
  5. LOX: tears of the kingdom
  6. Super Mario 3D workd
  7. Super Mario odyssey
  8. Super Mario bros wonder

Seeing those tweets and knowing that the studio is gone is just heartbreaking. So much talent gone just like that.

Thank you for pulling those together.

It feels like AAA is staring down the barrel when seemingly every other week a publisher or developer has decided to refocus on core IP. Ballooning budgets and longer dev times coupled with competing against black hole games for dollars and engagement seems untenable.

Perhaps it was optimistic to think green lighting games in the A/AA space would be a potential solution in hopes of driving down costs and increasing output in hopes of generating moderate successes in volume. Presumably it's hard to reconcile that route versus making a safe iteration in an established franchise.

I bet they're just waiting until the right time to annoucne that they "tried everything and gave it many years to retool but couldn't get it right" regarding Perfect Dark and cancel it.

i'd rather have everything go multiplatform and garner more retail sales than studio closures

After being banned for a month for just casually making fun of a certain company, I've realized this hobby's extremely toxic forums isn't for me anymore and I'd like to put an end to my misery once and for all.

So suck it nerds and continue to boot-lick your fav capitalist dirtbag company whether its xbox or sony, like a bunch of buffoons. I hope you get the illusion of enjoyment out of it for years to come.

Peace :)

As someone who has been a huge of Xbox since 2001, they lost a HUGE amount of good will and respect from today.

I'm beyond stunned.

What's frustrating is that the visibility in how they "make money" when their games are launching straight into GP is basically zero. Which just adds to the uncertainty of the situation.

What if the FTC wins and the ABK deal is unwound?

No one seems to talk about the fact that the deal isn't and never was approved in America and Microsoft strong-armed their way into it by greasing the pocket of greedy Members of Congress.

Lina Khan was cooking.
ABK won't get unwound, and Microsoft didn't strong arm their way into closing the deal... nor did Congress have anything to do with the deal being finished...

The deal was closed because the FTC didn't have a strong case, and specifically hasn't actually sued in federal court to stop the deal. They sued for a preliminary injunction to delay the deal, and that injunction was denied specifically because it was on shallow ground and merely a delay tactic.

Tbh gaming is just going to end up being

Free to play
Triple A
Indie
Honestly you're probably not wrong and that really sucks honestly. I love me some nice AA and smaller budget games and it sucks that they almost never seem to actually sell well enough to be profitable enough for more barring specific circumstances...

The gaming industry as a whole really feels like it's going down an unsustainable path and it really sucks. In the past I thought that Game Pass would shield MS from the major pains from that but apparently not...

As others have mentioned, I am especially bummed because I felt like Xbox was THE place for smaller scale games, recently with Artful Escape, Cocoon, Jusant, HiFi Rush and a bunch of others I'm not thinking of. and of course Ori and Cuphead. I know they aren't exclusives but being on gamepass it was just the best place for those type of games and seeing them going for bigger titles is just a bummer. Time to save up for a Switch 2

Microsoft asked Xbox, or maybe Spencer asked himself "Why should we be the losing platform holder when we can be the leading game publisher?"

So that's what we get. Xbox-Bethesda-Activision-Blizzard-King-Whoeverelse, the biggest moneymaker in gaming history. Expect many more studio closures, layoffs, AAAA sequels and GAAP (Game As A Prison).

What does June show failing even mean? That no one likes anything they show? I don't understand how that helps anything or anyone working on said games.

Yeah this attitude only leads to more layoffs and closures.

Oh my I desagree a lot with this attitude. Do nothing about the shit MS decissions bring us what? Layoffs and studio closures. So we do it again? "Let's be excited for June Showcase, new games""

Can we learn something from Helldivers 2 situation? I doubt. I really doubt. I Just saw some "Xbox fans" in a discord channel that are saiyng that Arkane Austin DESERVED to be closed, because Redfall brought disgrace for Xbox.

I would rather to Xbox have a terrible showcase now with record low engagement/views so they can see, "Ohh maybe we are doing something wrong", it's better that, to have a point of no return for the brand in the near future.

If I were working at one of the many Xbox studios right now, I'd be actively seeking opportunities elsewhere. Regardless of your reputation or the quality of your games, you're simply treated like a number in a spreadsheet, and they couldn't care less. I believe it must be currently one of the most unsafe places in the industry to work, or at least that makes you feel insecure and worried about your future in the industry. They are going to pay a harsh price for this if talented people start to leave

Perfect Dark is my most anticipated game of this generation. I love the N64 game I can't believe they still haven't been able to figure it out by now. The initiative was started back in 2018.

That's fair, I guess I was referring more to the games themselves not doing well, because I'd never wish that upon the developers, rather than the showcase itself.

I obviously couldn't disagree more with that boneheaded ArkAus take.
