If what matters is how many people play your games then, I repeat, you may as well go third party. Release them on PS4 and switch and you will have tons of users playing your games.

When more people are engaging with the brand, the brand is growing.

If that's not "what matters" then what isn't that you think matters? Do you think it's just about how many people play on your proprietary box?

As to why MS wouldn't just go full 3rd party, you must remember what MS' true goal- get gaining Windows users. With Windows being the dominant platform for Steam users, supporting Steam doesn't hurt their efforts at all. Natively supporting Nintendo with all their games would cost them opportunities to push a windows product.

the hype is real. IMHO it was a strange decision to wait four months before the update, we will see if it pays of

This seems like a BIG update, so I'm glad they are taking their time.

By the looks of it, could be May/E3 when its released since he spoke of livestreams to talk about the changes etc. They need to do it before Skull & Bones atleast. Also, streamers like Summit1G have moved on, probably will come back after the update.

I think we'll see more news on current XGS studios expanding and possibly adding more in-house teams instead of like 7 acquisitions like we had last year. Two new studios seem reasonable before the end of this year.

Besides Relic, what are your guys' expectations (not necessarily dreams) for number of acquisitions MS makes this year?

1-3 is my expectation, not that I think there is a ceiling on how many studios Microsoft looks to acquire, I'm just not trying to over estimate. I think they've got a lot of good teams now, and once those teams start putting out games and people see that they can still be successful and maintain their freedom under Microsoft, maybe then there will be another significant wave, but I expect things to slow down in the short term.

fallout 4 today right?

never played one, this a good one to start?
Fallout 4 is a fine game to get started with. If you really enjoy it, I would suggest picking up Fallout: New Vegas when it goes on sale (it's a 360 game available via Back Compat). It is a bit deeper in terms of its RPG mechanics and is generally regarded as the best Fallout game.

On a side note with Amy Hennig attending Google's GDC conference and Jade announced as VP for Google's gaming, I wonder if Glen Schofield is still a possibility for MS, his comment to Game informer that he was flying out to meetings and then coming back to San Fran (where google is based) for GDC makes me wonder if he's off to remond:

Conker is one of my all time favorites, and something that I have been hopeful for years and years.

Chris Seavor has hinted at a spiritual successor for Conker's Bad Fur Day. As for Rare or Microsoft doing it? Its really hard to tell with them. I think somebody came in this thread not long ago and had the idea of Conker working the way Kingdom Hearts does, where Conker could visit different franchises in each universe. Like a Halo World, Minecraft, Gears, etc. I thought it was a really cool idea.
That was me :p

I think the issue with Conker as well as Banjo is simply that I don't think enough people at Rare really want to make a new one but prefer moving on and forging a new legacy

I remember reading something a while back where one of the old hats at Rare didn't think they would make a new Conker, and if they did people wouldn't like it. It boiled down to basically that Rare and the developers from there had matured a lot, and the industry as a whole had matured a lot too, so if they made a new Conker it wouldn't be as crass, and he didn't think fans would like it. I'll have to find the actual quote, but that's the readers digest.

Edit: It was Chris Seavor

I probably would change some of the stuff now. The obvious one is the sunflower. That whole sequence is like, nope. I couldn't do that again. If it was made now and if it was the same team it wouldn't… I don't think we'd do a game that people would want because they'd want the original Conker. But we're not the people to make that game, ironically, because we've changed. My tastes have changed and I've moved on. You'd have a hard time getting it made now so the only way for anyone to play it is to play the original because I don't think there's going to be anything like it again.

I believe the Game core OS will also play some sort of role in all this.
Holy crap what is happening!!
Probably hiring for their second team or just making sure the second team is fully staffed enough to handle core AAA projects on its own? maybe?.

I do think rare could make a great new IP one day, like they did with Kameo imo
I don't think they would do that as they've had no problem letting other studios tackle Killer Instinct and Battletoads. I'm still confident we're going to get a Banjo 1 & 2 remake/remaster bundle in the vein of Crash and Spyro remake/remaster bundles.

Some would argue they've already made a great new IP in Sea of Thieves.

I remember reading something a while back where one of the old hats at Rare didn't think they would make a new Conker, and if they did people wouldn't like it. All good points. I don't think there is necessarily a cap, but I don't think we should expect 5-7 studios a year until next gen launches in fall 2020.

Depending on whether relic goes through and whether or not they need to disclose that acquisition prior to E3, I think we still see 3 or more announced on stage at E3. Its clear that segment resonated well with the fan base. And given the size of the studios they've been acquiring I can't see them only announcing only 1-2 smaller studios people may or may not have heard of.... like how they wouldn't have announced inExhile without Obsidian at X019 or how they wouldn't have announced only Compulsion at E3. Seems like 3 is A good number, with 1 of them being a larger or more well-known get (IOI, Remedy, etc).

I just hope to be either surprised by an out of know where acquisition and/or have one of them already have something in the works that MS can immediately segue into showing off

I'm confused, hasn't Microsoft supported Live on mobile now already with stuff like Minecraft, Wordament, and Solitaire? Or is this just going farther and letting those outside of XGS have Xbox Live functionality in their mobile games?

Sunset Overdrive is the closest we've had to a game with Conker's sense of humor. Although I enjoyed it, I'm not sure if the general audience liked it's humor.

Relic is from Sega that is public traded. If they had bought it I think they would have been obligated to report it already

Yes, I suspect buying a studio from a publicly traded publisher would be tough to keep a lid on. Shareholders and all that.

More likely to me is they've reached a multi-game arrangement with Relic/Sega for Age of Empires.

Besides Relic, what are your guys' expectations (not necessarily dreams) for number of acquisitions MS makes this year?

Two more. My dream would be IO Interactive and Frictional, but I think more likely would be IO and Asobo or Dontnod. Frictional has been too successful on its own for me to think they'd be a realistic option.

The support has been there, but I think it's mostly been first party games taking advantage of it. This will allow any developer to implement any aspect of Xbox Live in to any game. If you just want achievements, you get achievements, if you want an easy single sign on with a built in social stack, you can get that too. It's a cool idea, but it will require developers to want to do it, or for Microsoft to convince them (read pay) to want to do it.

I think the next round of acquisitions are gonna have a pretty big surprise that will blow everyone away, including folks in this thread that have cycled through like every independent dev on earth with their speculation.

Yay, more achievements while I'm laying in bed! During the Windows Phone and 8 era, there were plenty of 3rd parties who supported it early on with their games. I imagine it would be a fairly seamless process for them. It would be especially for games that are $5 on mobile that, when coming to console, are like $15. Looking at you, Artifex Mundi!
Well i love the idea personally xD
Thanks!

Besides Relic, what are your guys' expectations (not necessarily dreams) for number of acquisitions MS makes this year?
I'd expect 3-5 more this year.

I think Relic is a given.

Ones to look out for though....
IO Interactive, Behemoth, Playdead, Techland, Iron Galaxy, Bluepoint, Typhoon, Ruffian, Skyward, Splash Damage, and SkyBox Labs.

Dreams still include Tripwire Interactive and Turtle Rock (which seems much more unlikely now)

A couple of these are based off of close relations over years and seemingly silent recently.
Another few are close partners that also help with other MS 1st party games. A couple of these even seem like "work for hire" types like Ninja Theory were and could really thrive under MS (especially after Iron Galaxy's 'Extinction' flopped hardcore).

The key reason I believe we will have a highish amount of acquisitions is now there has been a decent amount of time for not just MS to approach studios, but also studios to approach MS (now knowing they are interested in acquisitions).

EDIT: Forgot a few things and names.

Sunset Overdrive is the closest we've had to a game with Conker's sense of humor. Although I enjoyed it, I'm not sure if the general audience liked it's humor.
That was for first party games. 3rd party developers could only use Xbox live in win store games for PC and win mobile, and even só only a few select developers were allowed.

Now it's open to everyone, and there's no more certification (at least on non Xbox platforms) so more people should use it.

A bit of a tangent, but some senior employees from Splash Damage founded an investment firm called Supernova that just announced they bought Flying Wild Hog (acquisition actually took place in 2018), see this thread: https://www.resetera.com/threads/su...ow-warrior-new-game-announcements-soon.105383

From the press release (http://flyingwildhog.com/news-supernova-capital.html):
Supernova was founded by six of the key forces behind award-winning London-based studio, Splash Damage (Paul Wedgwood, Mark Morris, Ross Farrow, Richard Jolly, Griff Jenkins, and Arnout van Meer).
Paul Wedgwood is the former CEO and co-founder of Splash Damage; Mark Morris is the Studio Director and Chief Revenue Officer of Splash Damage; Ross Farrow is the CFO of Splash Damage; Richard Jolly is the current CEO and co-founder of Splash Damage; Griff Jenkins is the COO of Splash Damage; Arnout van Meer is the CTO of Fireteam, a sister company of Splash Damage, and also a co-founder of Splash Damage.

Splash Damage itself is doing so much co-development with Microsoft these days (Gears V, Gears Tactics, Halo MCC), which actually makes it seem they would be a very interesting acquisition target for MS, if they can work out a deal with SD's current owners (Leyou Technologies).
