Though the Xbox Series S will undoubtedly be a more capable machine than the Xbox One X overall, Microsoft has confirmed with us that when playing backwards compatible titles, the Xbox Series S won't apply any Xbox One X-centric enhancements. When asked to clarify how the Series S deals with Xbox One X enhanced games, a Microsoft spokesperson provided the following statement:

"Xbox Series S was designed to be the most affordable next generation console and play next generation games at 1440P at 60fps. To deliver the highest quality backwards compatible experience consistent with the developer's original intent, the Xbox Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward compatible games while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR."

Well that makes the system less appealing.

You would honestly expect a next-gen console to not be held back due to having lesser specs than a console of the previous generation.

So before the next gen patch, Cyberpunk will run the One S version on Series S.
Maybe better free stuff from better CPU and SSD.

Yeah, I figured this was coming. Even with a newer architecture it's still got less GPU grunt than the One X. I suppose devs could patch in Series S enhancements but I'm not expecting that to be widespread at all.

New cross-gen games will probably have Series S specific modes, but most older games are unlikely to ever see them.

Can someone explain why? Is it because of many of those featuring resolutions above 1440p?

So its not for ppl upgrading from Xb1x....or anyone that owns a 4K tv?
I dont really see why you would buy this over a series X tbh.

100% makes sense, fair play to MS for confirming pretty quickly though, this isn't really a biggie, if you want to play last gen games with x enhancements they have a console for that.

Well that's shit.

So on the brand new console I'm planning on getting, the MCC is still going to have a shitty framerate?

From what I heard in the DF video on the series S, it's because of the limited RAM that makes it difficult to have the amount and bandwidth needed for XBX outputs (resolutions, textures etc).

That's... bad IMO.
The Series S should be enough to, at least, use the One X enhancements.

That RAM..... God I hope we won't be talking about it in two years or so.

Do current One X improvements make much of a difference if you only have a 1080p tv?

is this only an issue for 4K havers?

That fucking sucks

Isn't the GPU in the series s better than the one x???

It makes sense but it's still disappointing. I wanted one to replace my X1X in the bedroom. I'll probably wait until I'm mostly playing next gen games at which point it'll make sense to have one as a second console. Or maybe Xcloud will be the solution for the bedroom?

I can't judge based on the GPU itself, but I'd assume the RAM being lower and slower than even the One X plays a big part in not running them at the same resolutions.
Also, since they're targeting 1080p and 1440p (monitors) owners, they probably figured there's no pointing in pushing it over that.

Bummer ... that means backwards compatibility on the Series S is capped at 1080p (if not lower, depending on the game)

If you cared enough about that sort of thing, you were getting the Series X anyway.

Yeah found this out in the DF video yesterday. It sucks but there will still be improvements to how old games run (e.g. framerate, HDR, loading times, that Ninja Gaiden II staircase, etc) so it's not all bad.

Given what we know now about the RAM it makes sense. Hopefully games get patched, even if it's just the One S versions in 1440p60.

After playing many current gen games in a One S, this is not good lol
Jedi Fallen Order looks grainy as fuck for example

Expected if a tad disappointing - I do wonder if a number of titles will get patches to take advantage of the hardware though. There'll be a lot of horsepower left on the table if it's just running everything before the current gen as a One S (albeit with improvements to stuff like frame rates and dynamic resolutions).

Definitely an unfortunate side effect. I think there could be some cool applications with AI to improve these versions in the future.
