FOTNS wasn't really marketed as a Yakuza game over here, heck they waited until the last minute to announce the Kiryu skin. I doubt past games getting announced early has much indication on if the remasters are coming or not. People need to chill with this worry...

I don't think the other Olympics games will be out by the end of the year, just the Switch one. The others are slated for 2020.

right, had the Japanese release date mixed up.

They weren't shy about it (they knew Yakuza fans would be interested), however, the point is that just because Judgment is coming out a few weeks after E3 doesn't mean that there can't be an announcement of the ports at the event (Hell, they had announced Kiwami 1 and 6 at PSX more than a month before Zero came out)...it's not launching at the same time and SEGA would still be focusing on Judgment towards release. Can they announce it later? possibly, but E3 seems like the best time for them. If not, it doesn't mean panic, but at that point it would be a bit odd that it is taking long for an announcement.

Started playing Hokuto No Ken.

So far, I'm not feeling it, like is cool to destroy your opponents with your hokuto shinken and all, but overall I still don't understand how to properly play the battles, in a way that makes me earn S ranks, so even if I'm always winning, I'm feeling like I'm not playing this game right, also unlocking abilities is kinda confusing to me thanks to the different orbs.

Finally, the game has a really slow start, I just started to talk to Bat, yet so far I feel like Eden doesn't have anyhing to offer me. In that regard, I appreciated more the virtual tourism from the Yakuza games, where even when nothing happened, I still liked to walk on the streets appreciating the japanese culture through their architecture, restaurants and fashion style. Also I wish that by this point the game triggered more wacky and random side quests.

Is this game too long?

FOTNS is short if you just do the story. But the problem with just doing the story is that some bosses don't mess around (hey look! Sega discovered difficulty!) so certain bosses will destroy you. I think when I did my second run on the game (story only) it was 10 or so hours, or less. Took me 118 hours to 100% the game though, but that was with a ton of grinding. Even if you just plan on doing all the side stories you'll get stung by some grinding when clearing the club debt (I personally didn't find it that grindy, took me an hour or two, so just good podcast fodder) - and believe me its worth doing all the side stories, some of the fights make that grind worth it.

Eden wise, there are side stories tied to most places there, and also make sure you do the bartending side of things because a) many good side stories live here, and b) getting max affinity with many shop keepers yield different, good rewards.

The arcade has a few side stories tied to it, trigger them as early as you can as after that the treasure maps will start spawning arcade machines.

Combat - well I never understood how to get S-SSS ranks on the fights, I think it might be related to technique, speed and style (in terms of moves used) but that never mattered either way - treasure maps will be given to you even if your terrible so don't worry about that. And keep in mind its 100% impossible to unlock all moves first time round, you gotta play the game 1.5 times through to unlock all moves, as one particular orb (yellow I think) is only given at chapter completion. Keep in mind if your going after trophies there are a couple that are chapter specific. I forget them all, but there's definitely ones for:
Using a flame thrower against Souther (you need the talisman that lets you use a flame thrower for this)
Staring at Kisana (or if your playing it in English, Xsana as apparently the translater can't spell) for 2? minutes - and bare in mind the way to unlock this is to "lock onto" Kisana so you have to be able to talk to her to get the trophy - in that case just do it at the beginning of chapter 4 I think, as there's an early scene where you have to talk to her, but instead just click R3 to go into first person view and lock onto Kisana for a couple of minutes.

Yea, the Shining Orbs do keep you from fully leveling up on your first playthrough, if you're going 100%, just go through the story first (and some of the side stuff mentioned above) then focus on everything needed on the second run.

Because the cabaret club's main goal is a tiring grind and I ain't willing to do that again for a looooong time.

lol. The cabaret grind is nothing compared to the grind for the completion list - getting all armour and items. Few know the pain of getting all the item drops in the arena and random encounters, and even fewer that have managed it are sane. Believe me, I know.

Though I do wonder what's the tougher grind - FOTNS items or Ishin's modding materials. FOTNS have fewer but the drop rates in the arena are insane (play a certain fight, hope that a gold enemy appears, hope you kill said enemy, then hope it actually drops the damn item you need...) or just trying to get all the items in Ishin. Ishin has more to get (all the multiples of dragon items anyone?) but at least those drop rates are higher. Oh how nice it is that getting all the drone parts in Judge Eyes is super easy, as all can be collected via confirmed drops in the casino reward areas.

I'd argue for the arena drops, you could at least drop the difficulty to easy, it to easy and blow through those matches with no penalty. For me, the cabaret just gets to the point of doing the same mission over and over and over. Haven't bothered with some of the later random encounters in the Wasteland though...but I also guess some of the buggy parts needed for the hardest race is also a pain.

Dropping the difficulty doesn't really help when the drop rate is so insanely low that it'll take you hours to get what you need. Meanwhile, you have a finite target for the club and its ultra easy to do. There really is no comparison, the club is far less frustrating to do, no too ways about it. Both are a grind, but one you at least have an idea on how long it'll take, while the other can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 10 hours depending on your luck.

Later random encounters are actually worth doing. Mainly just because they chuck super high level enemies (and tons of them) at you at once. Really makes the combat shine when your taking them down with a mix of counters and perfectly executed combos.
Buggy parts aren't actually all that bad to get. The parts you need are fairly easy to come by, and even the modding parts you need are not too hard to get, a bit of a faff to learn all the locations of the traders and get the sweet spot on what items you need to trade for the items, but I didn't have a bad time with that.
The random super rare item drops in random encounters though had a trick to them, as they only spawn in certain locations, and even then you have to wait for the sports cars to spawn, then hope you get the item you need. Still, I got lucky with the random encounters and got the items fairly quick, especially compared to the hours the arena took from me...

And don't even get me started on getting all the base game 3 star talismen. Those take even more grinding as you need a ton of money and certain items that can only be acquired by racing, fighting or the casino. So really, that knocks the club down to third grindiest part of the game for me, if you aim for 100%. Ah the memories! I'll do it all over again when I get the time.

"With the PS5 seemingly on the horizon, the idea of developing for Sony's new platform came up. Nagoshi sees some potential but firmly stated that the team will be sticking with the PS4 for a while longer. As he put it, games have progressed from more graphical capabilities to network features and now a return to something he calls the "programmable" era. To him, the bigger boost isn't in graphics processing, but artificial intelligence and machine learning.

"If you would pour its [PS5's] power into graphics it'll be the best that we've yet to see," Nagoshi said, "and I think everyone is thinking about in what way we should use that power. I as well. There's artificial intelligence and many other things I want to think about." That idea gets me more excited than any 4K rendering ever will."

Imagine a Yakuza game with good enemy AI and higher difficulty. That'd certainly excite me far more than extra pixels as well. I forget exactly how things worked this gen with Yakuza but I seem to recall Sony wanting/requesting a Yakuza game for launch hence Ishin was cross gen, and obviously far better on the PS4 thanks to its better performance. I wonder/hope if that'd be the case with future games at least for the next few years. The games themselves look great but just need a kick up the ass to perform better - and the PS5 should be that kick. I'd really be happy if any Shin RGG release is just the PS4 game but with a better frame rate - whether it be a patch or separate release.

Either way, I'd expect we hear some concrete details on the game at TGS this year assuming its due out before September 2020 (the last mention of a release date was super vague). I'm just itching to see more of the plot and that's it. Gameplay and content wise will absolutely be fantastic so that's not a concern at all.

As in the latest IR, it will be out between 2020.4 and 2021.3. As for the PS5, the above poster changes the sentence a bit. Nagoshi expects PS4 will last longer on the market (one of the reasons is PS5's backward compatibility).

Sorry about that. I originally imbedded a tweet from Destructoid and that text is from their article. When I saw they were using Gematsu as a source, I changed the Tweet and left the text.

As for how the game will differ from past Yakuza entries, new lead Ichiban is more talkative than Kiryu has ever been. According to Nagoshi, this gives Ichiban a completely different motivation for his actions and changes the overall tone of the story. This also has a knock-on effect on the gameplay, which is stated to feel very different from past Yakuza games.

That's interesting. TGS can't come soon enough to finally see the game in action (I'm pretty sure it'll be at TGS).

I mean, that certainly sounds like it could launch around the PS5 in theory. Which I'm totally down with. Only thing I wonder though, if that's the case, are they not doing anything other than RGG5 this year? As it'd be super weird if they just take a year out like that. Not bad, as the series could do with a break, but it'd certainly feel strange. Unless they got another small FOTNS size game/remaster to announce as well for fans.

And yeah, I see the PS4 lasting longer, and it'd make sense for them to focus on both consoles (or just the PS4) initially as it'll have the bigger player base. I do hope for PS5 enhancements though if that's possible.

In this way, they can release Ichiban worldwide or on multiplatform simultaneously.

As for their output this year, they have RGG4, RGG5, Judge Eyes the SECOND EDITION!!! Also, they keep updating RGG online and if I know right, now you can play the whole RGG1 on RGG online, right?

It's just an IR report of its parent company. RGG is just a small part of the whole group. It could be inaccurate ;p

It'll just be a pity to not get something Yakuza related at year end :( But its probably one of those smaller years, I think 2013? was the last "slow" year for the series when RGG1&2 HD was the big release. No, the Wii U version not the PS3 version! That said, 2012 was a huge release for the series so it made sense to have slower year that year. RGG5 on its own is going to be a bit thing to replay for me anyway, and I cannot wait!

As for RGG Online - I think its just the first few chapters of 1 so far, they are releasing it in pieces like the main story, and I see them simply doing the rest of the games if it lasts that long.

In Kiwami 1, or any Yakuza game, when is the best time to collect the Locker items? Ive got a bunch of keys already, but im only on Chapter 3. Should I grab them?

Most of the games don't let you get all locker keys straight away, some are usually hidden around in areas that don't open up immediately (this includes Kiwami). The only games where keys are missable are 1 and 2 (as in, the PS2 originals, NOT the Kiwamis, as stupidly they put keys in areas that can only be explored once!) so your fine to just grab them here and there. It is however worth investing in Key radars (I think Kiwami has one) as they alert you when your near to one so that helps you find any that you may have missed as you just explore the game world doing other stuff.

Oh, and in Yakuza 5, don't pick up keys as Haruka. Basically because her inventory can't be shared with the other four characters, so its best to leave it to Akiyama.

I usually just get keys here and there as I play. I come across a good 90% by just naturally playing and then use a guide for the last couple.

No need to wait, you can just store the items away later via phone boxes. Its worth doing it in early on in later games (3 and up) because many have modding materials, or things you can sell and make lots of money (and you don't have lots of money early in the game).

Does my money ever get taken away or anything like that throughout the campaign? Got a few valuable items that I've been hoarding in case I loose a bunch of money or my items.

Depends, some sidequests take your money until you complete them, and theres one moment in yakuza 2 where if you dont wanna learn a minigame you gotta drop a lotta money to continue but selling the items you find in lockers that say in their description are good for selling will almost always set you way ahead of where you need to be moneywise. The only time in the series ive ever felt stripped for cash was in Shinadas story in 5 but thats kinda the point lol

Your playing Kiwami, so you will need around 300,000 yen I think in the later half of the game (chapter 11-12 I think? Definitely not before chapter 10) so just be mindful of that. But keep in mind that earning money is hilariously easy in the game. Just a heads up, save any gambling cheat items you may get as those are money makers - especially the Zero Jewel for Roulette - with that you are garenteed the ball will land on either 0 or 00 which is the best payout I think in Roukette? if you save before using it, then bet on either 0 or 00 (not both) you'll win something like 70,000 chips. And with the Black Jack amulettes you can get a few 21's before it runs out and make a lot of money that way as well. Then trade points in for platinum plates and sell them at pawn shops for shit tons of money - I think each plat plate costs 1500 points and sells for around 150,000 yen. So you can make millions real quick and easy!

Otherwise, the series is pretty kind with money. Its sparse in the beginning but later side stories and activities give you plenty. Oh, and in Kiwami keep in mind that you want to unlock the 3 Kiwami finisher moves asap if you've not already. Not are unique heat moves that are used on boss class enemies that break their healing state (if you've not got them unlocked, you can stop them healing by using a weapon or something from the environment if you have either to hand).

Can someone explain to me the logic behind
the Tojo clan going after Kiryu, Tachibana, and Oda AFTER a billion yen was given over? Just makes no sense other than a contrived opportunity to make room for action.

I'm going to give this a stab. I could be wrong so one of the regulars can back me up. Either:

1. Basically, they were double-crossed. Dealings with the yakuza are never to be trusted so the chairman said: "We'll take the money but only if you guys can make it out of these gates alive." It happens a lot in future Yakuza games FYI. He thought he could take the money and have them killed as one last test to see if they were serious but they survived.

2. Conversely, the Tojo clan was sent by Shibusawa, Awano, and Kuze to make sure Kiryu, Tachibana, and Oda wouldn't escape. Especially the latter since he called the shots after Awano and Kuze failed to capture Kiryu. Dojima gave Shibusawa free reign to do whatever he wants to obtain the Empty Lot. Nihara wasn't aware of the lieutenants' power play.

I mean,
the 2nd chairman told them they'd have to fight their way out after giving the money over. Its been a while since I played 0, but I think it was something to do with the spats Kiryu and Tachibana had going against the Tojo previously in the story, so even though they had a deal with the chairman, the rank and file weren't just going to let them walk away without a fight. Basically yeah it is an excuse to have a really cool fight at Tojo HQ, but I'm very certain its explained right before the fight begins.

I look forward to participating. Its a good month for it as well, what with Judgment and RGG5 getting released on the PS4!

So, new RGG Online story chapter out, English summary:

Seems very much like a bridge chapter like the last one, setting up for the next big Omi brawl.
Ichiban and co are now being hunted by Omi sympathising cops and the Omi themselves, makes me wonder if the next Omi big boss is either a high up corrupted cop (Yakuza 4 style) or maybe someone working directly with them, as they are really pushing the cops as a secondary antagonist force to the Omi hard these past couple of chapters and I don't see that heat going away anytime soon.
Also, kinda like the whole "Tsuji betrayal hint" there at the end of the chapter, somethings been off about him the moment he showed up... as news of Shin RGG builds up, a release slowly gets closer I can't wait to experience Ichiban's story for myself via the new PS4 game whenever its released

Why do games do this (Regarding 0)?

Making Makoto sister to Tachibana? Really? I guess the writers felt they needed to make us care a lot about her (and Oda btw), so they deicdes to make them siblings. Stupid. It feels so contrived to make them brother and sister and Makoto just HAPPENS to be the willed owner of the plot. It was so much more compelling when Makoto was *just* the girl who happened to inherit land she didn't care for. I expect too much from storytelling in gaming.

I just finished Zero for the first time yesterday, and now like ten minutes into Kiwami. Maybe I missed something but, I'm finding it a bit jarring that

Majima is crazy. He's like a totally different person.. like he's snapped or something. I know he had his headcut at the end of Zero, and changed but still. Total 180 change, and not sure I like him as much right now.

Ah. The newbie mistake. Majima was always crazy, its 0 that's more the outlier, not the other way round. And they did try to cover it in the end of 0. They just didn't really portray it well enough for my liking.

Its "bad" writing really, in 0 that he's they essentially give him a totally different personality. I mean, its not really bad writing as he's excellent in 0, but Majima has always been a more crazy character ever since his first appearance in the first Yakuza game, and instead of giving us a more crazy Majima, they come up with a plot device to have him not acting crazy and never really execute his shift at the end of 0, so it still seems weird. Its one of the reasons I actually kinda like Dead Souls Majima more as a playable Majima, he's just fucking nuts (and to be fair, the situation he finds himself in DS demands that). But I know that's not a popular opinion anywhere! They sorta straddle the line better in Kiwami 2's side story, though to short it manages to have moments where Majima is both more subdued, and nuts.

Unhinged Majima works well as a foil to straight-laced Kiryu, and he could work well as the viewpoint character in a story whose tone was primarily over-the-top comedic or amorally violent. But the Yakuza writers, while clearly lovers of farce, prefer to hang the main narrative on emotionally touching soap opera drama, which Majima is ill-equipped to handle. Thus when they made him a viewpoint character in 0, they had to essentially invent a whole new character (complete with his own "Majima" foil!) to get the kind of drama they wanted. I can't complain - his story in 0 taken by itself is some of the most successful storytelling in the whole franchise - but it certainly sits uneasily with the rest of the games.

(Also really excited for Judgment! I'll admit, I kind of wish they had stuck with Judge Eyes as the title, as goofy as that sounds in English.)

If they make a sequel, Judgment will be fine as a title while Judge Eyes won't I guess.

I wanted them to use Japanese for its title like Ryu ga gotoku: 龍が如く. 碧い眼窩 or whatever.

There was no chance those remasters were coming before Judgment, since they were... you know working on Judgment ;) I'd imagine they'll turn to focus on those remasters next, as I get the feeling Shin RGG is further away than expected (as in, not out in December). But that's just a hunch I have, not really based on logic.
Plus the remaster of 5 isn't even out in Japan, so no way was that ever getting released before that happened.

That's totally fair. I'm just saying that when I get my copy of Judgement it means I'll want to be immersed back in the world of Yakuza and Kamurocho. I've been on a hiatus after completing 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2. But Yakuza 6 has been sitting on my shelf unopened for ages now. I don't think I want to wait to play 3-5; I'd rather get into 6 as soon as I finish Judgement.

Not Nagumo :( Wait, what does fraud/swindling have as a penalty?) Worst case scenario do they scrub Yakuza 6 entirely and remake it ;) (imagine a Yakuza 6 now that they've got the Dragon Engine with more content and better combat. I can dream can't I?)

Oh man, Nagumo was one of my favurite characters in Yakuza 6. This sucks...

Been listening to Yakuza soundtracks this past hour and god damn does Yakuza 0 music sound amazing. I am willing to bat for it as the best soundtrack in the whole series. It is just amazing.

Excited to see how Judgment's soundtrack fares in comparsion.

0s good. But 3 and 6 sit as my favourite soundtracks. Both have a ton of great tracks I listen to over and over. Ishin is probably third, but that succeeds mainly thanks to lots of excellent remixs of previous game music rather than brand new stuff. 3 definitely has my favourite boss music in the series, no shadow of a doubt.
0 has Kuze themes though...

Shit. Nagumo was such a great character. Not sure if that is enough to get the game removed from stores. Around the Pierre Taki scandal Nagoshi said that Judgment was too new for them to ignore it. Yakuza 6 is about 3 years old now, so that might be old enough for Sega to either not remove it from stores and even if, not changing anything and re-releasing it. At least not on PS4.

Depends how guilty he is found, I guess, but the most likely outcome is probably that 6 is left as is for now then Miyasako will be replaced in a future remaster.
