I thought I was just gonna play 0 and move on, but now I kind of want to see that city in more modern times after I'm done. Maybe I'll just go straight to Judgment.

My first Yakuza was 0, which I put a ton of time into, and I have to say: It was a thrill to see the city jump forward 17 years when I started up Kiwami. Like, everything is kinda familiar but still very different, just the way you'd expect it to be if you jumped ahead in time in your own hometown. I just wandered around Kamurocho for a while looking at everything.

So yeah, you're gonna get that. It's awesome.

Wait, is the opening song called Bubble because of the setting? :O

If so, that just makes it being changed even more of a shame.

Yeah, that sounds really cool, actually. Does that extend to interiors as well? Like, by playing a more modern game I can see the difference in how a typical japanese karaoke used to look like to how they look like currently?

Cross posting this from the Yakuza game-along thread
I started to play Yakuza: Black Panther using a Google translated Japanese guide. I'm on chapter 4 and while I'm missing a lot with my super limited Japanese, it's still fun. The story seems pretty dark so far.

I don't know if these open up later but the Sega arcades only have 1 UFO catcher each and no video games, the karaoke has 1 song and no rhythm game, you just mash the O button to fill a meter (another side activity shares the same mechanic.

The batting cage, bowling and hostesses are here, cabs and locker keys are out, You find cats now. No darts even though there's a huge sign mentioning them. The jobs you can do are pretty fun, working at strip club as a bouncer(?), noodle shop, burger place & ice cream shop.

The game uses the fixed camera of Yakuza 1&2 and a motion comic style for cut scenes that's growing on me. The battle system is opening up and is more like a 2D fighting game than the other games in the series. Stat's like attack, stamina, heat etc.. seem to take money to level up.

Any tips from those who've play it would be appreciated.

Yeah, pretty much. It's all different.

And at this point, when you play Kiwami, Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 3, you're stepping back in time about a decade from today, heh. Yakuza games are virtual tourism and historical tourism.

Can't believe we're finally getting Judgment next week! Anyone know what kind of difficulty getting the plat is in this?

Hopefully can hold me over until we hear something (anything..) about the Y3-5 remasters.

Somewhere between 6-8/10. Maybe higher. Basically ask yourself these questions:
Do you know how to play Mahjong? (there's lots in the game, but you can get cheat items)
Are you any good at Puyo Puyo? There's a requirement to beat all 10 opponents in the mini game (which requires you to get close to a 30 win streak in one match)
Do you have the patience to get all the time trials in Drone racing? Some are pretty tough to nail, but again there are ways round this.

Its fairly simple otherwise, didn't even feel like something that's too grindy. Shogi could be tricky but you can find videos to show you how to clear it.

Thanks for your insight!
I learned to love Mahjong when getting the plat on K2, so no concerns there. Not awful at Puyo so I can see putting some time in to finish that up.

Honestly as long as nothing is as ridiculous as expert pool rotation from K1 I think I'll get by.

Pool is one of those things I learned thanks to 3, that shouldn't in theory trouble me again (at least in the older games). Its not in Judgment anyway, so that's a moot point! I can see many people go mad trying to get the Mini Game Master trophy in Yakuza 3 when that eventually hits the PS4 over here though!

The one thing I'll give Judge Eyes was that while it took me a while to plat, it never felt like it. It just flew by, aside from a couple of tough points here and there! Even then, I got Puyo out of the way early which was a relief!

Hopefully a solid 80-85. I'd rate it higher, but you never know what reviewers are like. All I know is I loved the game.

It'll likely review in line with the most recent entries, so between 80-85. Perhaps lower if reviewers are burnt out on this style of game.

Well nothing stops this train at this point... have a feeling that even if get my hands on Dead Souls, i will like it haha

My first "platinum" for RGG title \o/, even mahjong is now enjoyable... crazy shit (i was close with 0 before but never bothered with finishing completion list)

Amazing game if only a bit too easy, kinda ruined my first hard playthrough by getting really overpowered before final battles by finishing most of the side content... also breezed through legendary difficulty playthrough in ~4 hours without even a glimpse of a challenge unless you get out of your way and make it harder to yourself by placing restrictions on your gear etc.

... modded costume from Y6 demo fits so well in most scenes( and breaks the game in others of course, like in Omi HQ scene where there are supposed to be no shoes on the character and in pre-rendered cutscenes), really great stuff

My soul, heart and my wallet are open, SEGA. Please hurry up with those western 3, 4, 5 remaster releases! Kinda conflicted about getting Judgment though since i got a taste of Dragon Engine at 60fps on PC and it would be really hard to get back :(((

This series almost single-handedly keeps my passion for gaming alive lol

Awesome pics :) That's a really nice outfit (and goes great with Daigo in that above shot! And yeah, the game being too easy is an issue I have with it (heat moves are basically instant win moves in some fights!

This is just amazing, thank you for sharing. It's crazy that it feels like i lived in this place for years after playing few rgg games, this region is more recognizable just from looking at video like that than regions in my hometown haha.

There is also one for Dotonbori from different channel that i frequently visit.

"...I Did It for the Trophy"

LMAOOOO

So, will any friends I make send me nudes? Is that how it works? "You helped me come up with a new product idea, here are some nudes"

Does that mean that even the officer who searched my belongings...?

I was actually surprised that the in-game model actually looked like the actress, I thought they would be completely unrelated.

Whenever the Yakuza series brings in a real actor to play a part, they try to model the in-game character to look as close to the real life person as possible. (Which is part of why Judgment ran into trouble after Taki's arrest.) JAV actresses are no exception!

Wow, just realizing when checking Era now that we get to hear Kiryu's thoughts on recent events as part of his "idle pose", smoking.

That's so cool.

It's almost time to stop playing and all I did was bowling and porn. God help me.

Dreamcast guy said in the latest Spawnwave podcast Judgement is a Goty candidate
I'd love to see it get a nod for at least its story when it comes to GOTY's, but I don't see it happening as it'll probably get passed over... Only reason I wouldn't give it my GOTY this year is that I already did that last year!

It wasn't even that pool is hard, the AI was just cranked up to 11 and can win the entire match without you even getting a chance to play. Almost drove me crazy lol. Not looking forward to that in Y3 if it's as bad as Kiwami.

the ebay copy of judgment i posted a few days ago, and a few of you ordered, it is definitely legit and mine arrived today, but it is definitely shady as hell. the return address was fake.

Its hard to say, because I never experienced anything that bad in Kiwami while I did see it happen maybe once in 3. But in both instances I managed to get AI that made a mistake or two which was all I needed! I actually found 4 Ball on Yakuza 4 harder, but that's more down to a hilariously inaccurate targeting sight that literally did not work half the time. There's no actual requirement to 100% that, other than insanity apparently, but I did it! The other modes were way easier, even on expert!

Fake how? Sounds like whoever got them didn't get them entirely legally!

In the US at least, no one checks the return address unless mail actually needs returning, so for people using services to mail illicit items, putting an address of 123 Fake Street in whatever zip code makes sense to reduce the risk to the seller.

So hyped for Judgment. Though I'm torn between playing with the dub or the Japanese audio. Crispin Freeman and Greg Chun are a joy to listen to.

Speaking, Playstation posted this earlier. 21 minutes of gameplay with Scott Strichart and Greg Chun.

Wow, that's actually really awesome and good to know. Thank you very much!
The building is also modelled in the games, near Don Quijote in Sotenbori.

When I visited Osaka back in 2017, it was plastered with Yakuza 6 stuff, and together with a poster advertising the game in a nearby Sushi Zanmai (actually, it was more of an ad about Sushi Zanmai being in Y6) it's one of the two things during that trip that made me curious about this series in the first place.

Just today I knew that I can play Judgment on Friday if I pre-ordered! So stoked right now because I'll have the whole weekend to play it

I tried to get a friend into the series and suggested he start with Yakuza 0 on PC.

He gave up not long after playing. He said he can't get past the dated game mechanics and clunky (as he put it) gameplay.

Shame.

I almost didn't want to play Yakuza 0 because of the cut scene when Kiryu meets the money lender: Still images with the lips moving a little while the dialogue plays.

Not really seeing the hype for Judgment, sadly. Personally I can't wait to play the game but the EDGE review (6/10) and the missing hype are worrying.

I'm finally pre-loading the game. Too bad I won't have much time to play it on the weekend. I still hope I can squeeze in some time though.
