They should have done a full dancing rhythm game with Akyama as The Manager.
A baseball coming of age kid drama with Shinada as The Coach.
And a hunting / rescue mission game in the mountains with Saejima as The Hunter.

The full trifect.
So basically just re-release Yakuza 5. Well I have good news... ;) Seriously, just watch people next year complain about 5 and its content, tons of combat (the arena with everyone) and suddenly it'll be fatigue again!

Now that I think about it, I'll be playing 7 before the remaster of 5 in English... I honestly assumed 7 wouldn't be coming so soon.

lol i guess so, expand the minigames and do more slice of life drama and less yakuza crazy story. While i didn't especially liked the story in 5 the content and variaty of gameplay was the best.

I enjoyed Haruka chapter a lot, just the j-pop drama and rhythm game.

I guess I'm really glad we'll get the 5 remaster here in the West next year, it's gonna have to hold me over and I have to hope that this is gonna be an aberration. I pretty much didn't think there was anything that couldn't get me to get an RGG game day one after how I've been hooked the last year, but I can't really get behind this other than out of blind loyalty to the studio.

And what if it sells well? What then? Yakuza is gonna be a turn based RPG moving forward? It's a no-win situation for people who like RGG but don't like this move/genre. I basically have to root against this game selling well enough that they decide to keep it moving forward.

I've been mulling about this morning's news all day and I think I'm cautiously optimistic. Everything else looks great, and I do enjoy turn based RPGs... If they cut back on the amount of random battles I'll probably feel better.

IMO they should've used Judgment to try out this turn based system instead.

Pretty much my feelings as well. It's kind of like wanting your sports team to tank in order to get a number one draft pick, but in this case, I don't think any result is going to get the "old" Yakuza back.

Saw this on Twitter and Discord. A suggestion for the OT title when the game comes out-
Yakuza: Like A Dragon (Quest)

Ignore if old.

Oh i just noticed the Joon-gi Han look alike in the trailer, we might get some more Korean Mafia in this.

Also him getting his haircut by mistake is pretty funny.

Disappointed in the direction they're going gameplay wise, but liking other changes.

Biggest disappointment of the day for me is people telling me I'm in the wrong for not being supportive etc. Bah.

I'm also sick of hearing all the shitting on Yakuza combat now that this change has been announced. It's not perfect, but damn is it intense and visceral!

People have complained about Yakuza's combat (unfairly) in my opinion for ages. I've seen plenty of posts in 0's, Kiwami's and Judgment's thread that made me stop responding at points because of just how damn negative it got. Can't say I'm really surprised to see some people spring up and complain about it again unfortunately... I'll miss the old combat but I'm down for a change after so many games in the same style. Kinda sad to see the games producer have to basically apologise just for revealing the game, especially with no proper gameplay showed off (only the tiny amount leaked) yet some people here and elsewhere have been pretty venomous with their responses.

Seeing people actively hoping the game will bomb is rather distressing though, sending feedback is one thing and should be encouraged, but just remember Sega can be shortsighted enough when it comes to sales, who hear has been into the series long enough to remember Dead Souls? So yeah, by all means wish for a change back to the old style, just maybe don't wish for the change using a Simpsons Monkey Paw?! ;)

They're not worth your time, there's always gonna be those kind of folks who try to make you feel bad for not showing support. c:
They should instead focus on those who immediatly wish for the game to bomb, or calling it trash.
I'm disappointed with the change, hell it's even a pass for me but damn if I don't want them to succeed with the new title.

It's disappointing so many people seem to be down on it. As for the combat complaints, I've never understood them. The Yakuza series has some of the best and most satisfying combat, especially for the Brawler/Beat Em Up genre. It's not a Character Action game like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry sure, but I like the fighting system much more than in Sleeping Dogs or the Arkham games.

Yep, I'm right there with you with on all of that. As someone who is lukewarm on turn-based combat and thoroughly enjoyed the uniqueness of Yakuza-style combat, this is all tough! I really was looking forward to iterating on the new engine with a new character and possibilities.

I adore the studio and want nothing for the best for them as they've given me an absurd amount of enjoyment, but I feel like I'm walking on egg shells saying anything critical right now. IF this does well, that likely means the Yakuza I adore will be no more (or maybe just living on in Judgement? Mannn, why didn't they try this combat out on Judgment!). If it doesn't do well, they kinda kneecapped the introduction of a whole new start to the Yakuza series.

I'm going to give them every chance in the world to sell me on Yakuza 7, but i'm floored that I even just had to say that sentence.

I have no idea how this would go, but I'd be interested in hearing what percentage of Yakuza "vets" are thrilled about this change. I can totally see newbies or people that dropped off of Yakuza being into such a change, but in my very unscientific opinion, it sure seemed enthusiasm for the Yakuza series was at an all-time high and it seemed new people were falling in love with the series every day.

I've been with the series since 2006, and while I'm not out of my mind thrilled, I am excited. I love action games like Zelda, Okami, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, but I also love turn based RPG's like Dragon Quest, Grandia, Final Fantasy & SMT/Persona. I'm eager to see what on one my favorite developers does when they change things up.

Resident Evil 4, Zelda: Majora's Mask, Zelda: Wind Waker, Zelda: BOTW, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Yakuza Dead Souls, Dino Crisis 2 , Super Mario Sunshine & Metal Gear Acid were all games in series' I'm a big fan of that tried new things and I enjoyed them all.

Not all new takes on established things work out and if Yakuza 7 turns out to just a weird curio that we look back on in a few years, that's fine too.

Man, the amount of people shitting on the old combat in the other thread is insane.

I feel like if I come from another planet when I am reading all those posts. Yakuza is one of a kind and to see that combat go away while people are saying that's for the better is just disapointing.

I am sure the new combat will be good. I am fine with a Yakuza game having it. It is disapointing for me personally if that's how the series will be from now on but I am fine with it assuming it is a one time only deal.

The best case scenario for me would be if Yakuza 8 comes and it brings back the classic combat AND the turn based combat. Make the game focused on the classic combat just like any Yakuza but have a mini game with it's own plotline that uses those mechanics. Or just as I mentioned in the other thread, add a Pokemon Go type of thing similiar to how you found porn cards in Yakuza 0 but instead of that you find classic Sega mascots and characters like Sonic, The Crazy Taxi drivers, Monkey Ball, the Daytona hornet car, those animals from Golden Axe.

This would be a dream come true.

Huzzah. 5 attempts but cleared that damn 100 man brawl with Shinada in Yakuza 5. Now just gotta do it again with Akiyama and the most annoying bit is done. Then the grind for doing the rest of the arena 4 times... I should have really remembered, but using weapons early on is a bad move - especially as Shinada has a couple of great crowd control moves that really help deal with late stage foes.

Now I just need to channel my past self and remember how I cleared it as Akiyama. I know you can use his somersault kick to kick people on the ground endlessly, but that's gonna be annoying when a big group all attack at once...

It's just ERA being ERA. On other websites, there are people that genuinely enjoyed the combat that are now upset with this news.

I'd agree that would be an acceptable scenario, but I don't want to bank on an unpredictable future.

I am afraid of the future if I am honest.

I wish I could get a confirmation that Yakuza will return to what it was. I can then sleep easily knowing the series will still be the same one that I fell in love with.

This has been so damn strange. As someone who's extremely excited for Y7 (despite not thinking the change was necessary), seeing people bash on the action combat is downright bizarre. Sure I've been critical of it in Dragon Engine games, but even then it's far from /bad/, just not as good as before (IMO anyway).

I'd definitely take Yakuza's action combat over virtually every other melee focused action game out there.

Same. If they had said there will definitively be more beat 'em ups, it'd be one thing, but the way they worded it, it came off more as a fail safe plan. That, and I don't see how they can call this Y7 without committing to a new style of play for at least a couple of games in a row. Best case scenario, is that we'll get a beat 'em up some years down the line, but I'm not optimistic at the moment.

I could totally see why many people prefer the old engine combat but after Judgment I am all in for the new engine combat. It still feels like there are tons of places that they need to improve but the combat is starting to bloom in the new engine.

It is the same for the spin offs.

What if people do like the new direction? It is very possible that they would double in and make them turn based too. Judgment 2, which is a game everyone is banking on even though we are not sure when and if it will come, would fit much more with the new combat because you are a civilian.

It is really depressing to think this way and I am sure everyone who liked the old combat is feeling that way. I might have to avoid Yakuza for a while as this will turn me insane if I don't.

Yeah, I agree, including everything about Judgement which always seemed like a one-off to me anyway.

I guess we just have to hope RGG studios throws a bone, but I think it's apparent they have the desire to do something different. I'd have been on board too if they wanted to take a break from Yakuza and work on a different IP, or even create a new one. This though is the most polarizing thing they could have done because it might permanently change the series.

I'm totally fine with this change. If it doesn't work out and most people don't like it, they will go back to the old system anyway. I really like this approach. After so many years, I think the series deserves a shot at something entirely new. My only fear is that the pacing when running through town might be a bit slow depending on hiw the random encounter rate is and how long the battles will take. But other than that? Hell yeah, gimme the game now. I hope the English release won't be too far away from the Japanese release.

I do love how they got Yuji Horii's permission to let Ichiban say "I love Dragon Quest" in the game, haha. In general they're trying a lot of new things with this game, both with the main character as well as the gameplay. Excited to explore Yokohama. I'm sure Kamurocho will be in the game, too.

I also love how the April Fools joke was pretty much just a teaser for the new game. They all played us like a damn fiddle, haha.. Funnily enough, I recently said to myself: "Man, I bet this April Fools joke will actually be a minigame in the new Yakuza." Close enough, I guess.

It's still insane to me that in a year where you have a spinoff getting insane localization and outdoing SEGAs expectations in the west they would completely change the formula like this.

It's certainly been a rollercoaster last few months for the community.

That's what I find the most strange and something I have mentioned it in other threads - timing.

Series finally has a solid following in the West and now they decide to throw this curveball into the mix. Judgment was the perfect place to test the waters with such a change.

Y’all need to calm down. It’s just one game.

I bet even if they keep turn based in the future, it will only be about Ichiban.

When they inevitably bring back Kiryu and Majima, they will still have the traditional action system.

Well... seeing the trajectory this thread is going I think I'm done. This is all getting too depressing and I've seen several apparent "long time" fans of the series in this thread and others here saying that only new fans are happy with this change... Well that's just damn insulting, seeing as I've been playing from the beginning, and have played every game in the series under the sun (well, bar the online games, but I've at least been following the plot closely in Online).

But apparently I'm not a real long time fan, as I dare to wait and see how the game plays, rather than jump on the hate and complaining bandwagon immediately. Seriously, the doom and gloom in this thread is embarrassing and I want no part of it. I won't bother posting here again, I'll just go elsewhere, where shockingly more long time fans are at least on the fence and interested to see where the series goes.

Oh, and thanks to gachapin for all his help with various translations, info and the like over the last few years, he helped me a lot in previous games.

This sucks! You're passion for the series was great. I really don't get the hand wringing over the new game and the vitriol is really weird.

Fuck.

Sad to see you go shadowman16, but there are also those critical who aren't gatekeeping or claiming anything about true fan this, fake fan that. I think it's reasonable for the fans, whether new or old, to take issue with this new direction, and voice their critiques and concerns. I myself don't like it, but I'm not skipping Yakuza 7, boycotting the series, or doing anything otherwise silly like that. I'm still glad to be a part of this community, glad to see people post about the games.

It's normal for fanbases to experience periods of chaos or upheaval in light of new announcements of major changes, and I think everyone can get through it and express themselves without being gatekeepy. Hell, I'm a new (2017) fan myself, and I don't like this change. You're a long-time veteran, and you're optimistic about it. There's all sorts, and that's okay. At the end of the day, I'll still play Yakuza 7 regardless, because it's Yakuza 7.

Try and give it some time maybe, I hope people will calm down in a couple days. I do agree that the mood in this thread kind of sucks right now. You'd think RGG Studios would have earned a little trust by now, but I guess not.

I'm sure the fact that I love turn based games made it easier for me to accept this than most people, but still. What's wrong with a wait and see approach? I don't see the point in being this dismissive towards the game right from the get go.

I know I don't post much, but let me just say that I always enjoyed reading your posts and would be sad to see you go.

One of the most positive things about the turn based combat system is that the RGG team has LITERALLY no excuse to not include Pocket Sand as an ability for Ichiban.

I understand your feelings and I agree that it is depressing.

At the end of the day, not everybody will like the change or hate it. Anybody calling others fake fans or true fans need to rethink what they are doing.

I highly doubt I will like the new combat as the old one is why I liked Yakuza in the first place but I won't be hating on anyone optimistic about it.

I am hoping for a return to the old combat but I do not want the developers to be hurt by it and for the game to bomb. That is selfish and I respect the developers too much to be petty about it.

I am trying to take a break from Yakuza due to this news as it would probably help me calm down and I recommend everyone to do so but please come back if you do take a break as well. Your posts are always a joy to read because of your passion and well written posts.

I understand this and I’m with you. I’ve played every game in this series since the first game. I’ve played these games in Japanese when we weren’t sure we were going to get them localized. I own 1&2 HD, Kenzan and Ishin despite not knowing a word on Japanese. I still remember when I was on GAF celebrating the 3 localization announcement on PS3, and laughing when the cover was so bad.

To see some in this thread basically disregarding other opinions in the other thread who are happy with the change (i.e me) is disheartening. I don’t participate in this community very much but I’ve been a longer and bigger fan of this series than most people.

I've been playing Yakuza since the release of 4 and whilst I was initially shocked to hear about the turn based combat in 7, I've come round to idea and I'm actually kind of excited to see how it turns out.

I've veered away from jrpg's over the last two generations as current tastes in Japan no longer appeal to me, but a Yakuza game with the associated production values and art style, with deep RPG mechanics would certainly drag me in.

This tweet is interesting. You saw his name, 庄司 英徳, a lot across RGG series. It is very vague but what I got is he is not 100% positive.

I am afraid of the future if I am honest.

I wish I could get a confirmation that Yakuza will return to what it was. I can then sleep easily knowing the series will still be the same one that I fell in love with.
Nagoshi talks about it here. While pursuing the action genre with Judge Eyes and such, he'd like to try the new direction and see how it will go. If he receives the opinions that are preferring the action for RGG studio, he'd like to go back to the classic style.

This tweet is interesting. You saw his name, 庄司 英徳, a lot across RGG series. It is very vague but what I got is he is not 100% positive.

I know about it but the thing is that it is not 100% sure thing they won't continue with the new style. If people do like it then I doubt they will go back any time soon.

I think having one series be action and the other series be RPG is pretty fair, if both styles end up popular.

I would be down with that.

I would have prefered Judgment being the one to be turned based but as long as they confirm another brawler then I would suck it up. I like turn based games but in this particular situation I didn't want much change because it is the last series being released in the genre.

Oh well, if RGG studio is happy then I support them.

Well... seeing the trajectory this thread is going I think I'm done.

Yeah the whole thing it's just sad to witness ...

I think I will just double dip on Yakuza collection. Pre ordered the disc version but I will buy the digital version as well to support them and play the games again.

True fans:

Replace 2 legs with Yakuza.

Anyway, decided to grab the collection digitally while I wait for the disc version and I am installing Yakuza 3 as we speak. Can't wait to replay this amazing game!

I'll be at TGS this year. You can be pretty sure that I'll make a run for the Yakuza 7 booth.

I haven’t seen a single person say that all longtime fans are unhappy with the changes. Obviously quite a few of you are happy or at least ambivalent.

I’ve seen several people SAY other people are saying it, but, nope, haven’t actually seen it.

Been playing Yakuza 3 for a few hours and I love it all over again.

You almost never see parenting in video games and it is by far the most interesting thing about Yakuza 3. I forgot some scenes as I haven't played the game in over 5 years so it is pretty fresh even on a replay.

The funniest thing about it though is the "breathing" animations that games used to have early last gen.

Nothing you couldn't fix by blocking those problem folks. I understand taking a break from the thread itself but leaving it altogether? Seems like a bit of an overreaction to me. Obviously that "only new fans like the change" is idiotic and you shouldn't fall for it to the point where it makes you feel the way you do because it's simply untrue. Same with waiting and see the gameplay, you're not the only one doing that.

There's always gonna be those "long time fans" who'll expect other long time fans to see things the way they do, then call you out on it when you don't and then labeling you as "fake". Don't let these idiots ruin things for you they ain't worth it. I think you should reconsider once things have calmed down.
